The last several days have really taken a toll on this team and the timeline of the steep downward spiral seems to have coincided with the trading deadline. In any event, the Cardinals are now barely over even and we’re seeing the type of separation in the standings that has the chance at a WC beginning to fade from view unless the Cardinals can string together a couple of W’s.
Cardinals face another lefty…
As I mentioned at the end of yesterday’s game thread, Ollie faces a dilemma vs lefties. Specifically with manning the heart of the order. Does he lean on hitters who don’t do much vs lefties, or does he lean on hitters who don’t do much vs anyone? He has lately been choosing the latter, putting the bronze paperweights in the heart of the order. We have been losing with that, so what will he do?
I think it’s a given that Goldschmidt will not be back next year. Arenado might have to be because of his contract unless the Cardinals are willing to pay for him to play somewhere else.
The rotation is mainly a patchwork of aging ‘crafty’ veterans.
The roster looks like a complete disaster to me with very, very few bright spots – certainly not enough to construct a future contender around.
Limping into the bloated playoffs should not be the goal but IF that is how you are going to do it then you absolutely must have 2 top notch, frontline starters, a rock solid closer and 7th & 8th inning bullpen guys plus at least an average offense that may can ‘get hot’ in October.
I think the Cardinals probably have the bullpen requirement checked off (for this year – relievers are funny…) but nothing, and I mean nothing else.
The Cards love their aging veterans, so I wouldn’t rule out Goldy’s return on a team-friendly contract. But to be more than a 20% pay cut, it can’t happen until after he reaches free agency.

I don’t get this. Carlson immediately succeeding with the Rays, to me, doesn’t mean our player development system is subpar.
Goldy and Arenado did theirselves no HOF favors in 2024. If they continue this production Bill may lose interest in their “legacy” status. I hope he has w/Goldy, and lets him walk. I’ve moved on from both.
Carlson may get a psychological boost for a while, but he’s the same player. They might be able to fix him over the winter. There will still be the durability issue.
This roster is a mess and the thought of MO and that FO back another year is pure HORROR. In last 5 games 3 /32 with RISP. No playoffs again.
Jeffrey Scott Springs. 31 year old North Carolinian fresh off TJS (Tommy John Surgery to the layman). Fastball only sits at about 90mph, but has developed a very nice change. We’ll get to this guy tonight. Concerning Carlson, we won’t be seeing any standing ovations for his return to St. Louis in enemy uni, but some sitting acknowledgments should be in order. Hey has anybody seen any posts from the esteemed GameCard? I’m now thinking that he wasn’t kidding when he said that he was switching allegiance from St. Louis to LA, since his boy Tommy was now a Dodger. Talk about a double whammy for us here at The CardinalNation….losing both Tommy Edman and GameCard in one fell swoop. In honor of GameCard, I think we all here should honor him with a moment of silence before this evening’s Cards-Rays game. If we posters could please bow our heads between 6:44pm-6:45pm(CST) and by all means submit no posts during this one minute period.
And what’s on the din-din docket tonight one may ask? I think a trip over to Johnny’s Italian Steakhouse, where I’ll be ordering off menu the scrumptious steak tartare, with mashed potatoes and asparagus spears. And to celebrate losing 6 pounds over the last two weeks by scaling down on my Popeye’s apple cinnamon pies from 3 to 2, I’ll be ordering 4 of them tonight when I swing through their drive thru lane after din-din.
This roster is a mess
It is and there is no hope of substantial improvement. Bill had to hire a whole rotation, he’s not going to hire a whole lineup too. Mo might get some more 36 year olds.

CF Victor Scott LThe Cardinals are now situated at a distance of 4 full games away from the final NLWC berth. It’s approaching mid August, so I don’t feel it’s too early to say that it’s must win time. It’s my guess that this team will head in one of two extreme directions in the form of either stringing together 3 or 4 weeks of the sort of play that will produce the amount of W’s required to vault this team into the ’24 post-season, or they’ll pack it in and feature the type of tailspin that’s a future reference for the definition of a quitter.
It’s my grandsons birthday so i will miss the first half of the game. Sometimes this is a good thing. Me get away from them for a few games and they straighten up. I left work early yesterday to watch them. It was a very sad game. Get me a nice lead for when I check in.
Yeah…the Cards do love their aging Vets.
But let’s face it…this approach rarely works. Albert was fab his final season….but come on, Waino, Yadi, crawfish, Marp…it isn’t working.

My biggest gripe with the legacy deals is if the Cardinals are going to insist on doing them, then don’t turn around in the next breath and plead poverty regarding payroll capacity and/or lecture about “competing every year.”
