I’d like to see the following:
MLB Starters
1) Corbin or Keuchel
2) Miles M
3) Flaherty
4) Wacha
5) Waino – if they think they can get more out of him
6) Weaver or Gant or Gomber – Trade of one or two likely
AAA
1) Hudson – Continues to start and be stretched out, but not over worked because they will need him in the second half, so it’s somewhat of a conserving situiation
2) Reyes – Starts the year as an extra arm in the BP, then sent to AAA to stay stretched out, thus hopefully delaying his service clock a year since 2 years have already been completely wasted
3) Ponce – Same as Hudson
4) HelsleyIn my scenario, Carlos Martinez, one of the three #6 starters, Kelly, Gyorko and JMart were traded in a massive three team trade that gets the Cardinals G. Torres of the Yankees or a similar player and a prospect or two.
1) Carp -1B
2) Torres – SS
3) Ozuna – LF
4) Dejong – 3B
5) O’neill – RF
6) Molina – C
7) Bader – CF
8) Wong – 2BBench: Munoz, Wisdom, Fowler (sigh), Pena, battle in ST for 5th OF
Question: What would a realistic package look like for the Yankees to give up Torres? Would CMart, Gant, Kelly and Helsley be enough? That sounds like a ton, but I’m guessing that’s about what it would take for a cost controlled short stop with his skill set.
The Yankees, with Torres and Didi, and their major need for SP seem like a perfect trade partner.
A) CMart and one or two of Weaver/Gant/Ponce for Torres
B) Wacha and one of Weaver/Gant/Ponce for DidiDidi as a LH bat with some pop would be a great 5 hole guy if they can find another MOTO bat to hit 4th. He has one year left, so the risk of losing him is obviously there.
Thoughts? Is that enough?
After reading through this I just looked at the stats of Voit, Pham and Piscotty…. WOW! Small sample of course, but glad they are doing extremely well. I personally always root for ex Cards as long as they aren’t on an NL rival. I root for a Heyward strikeout every time I see an AB of his as an example.
On the flip side, the Cards won the Marco G and Tyler O trade, Marco has ok numbers and 27 starts, but O’neill in RF or LF after Ozuna goes is better for them long term.
8) Nunez – This is way to high to rank someone yet to play in the states, but the upside is equivalent of a risky #1 overall pick in the draft, IMO of course.
9) Ponce – Proved he can do it in the bigs already, very solid #4-5 starter at the worst, or possibly the second piece of a trade wouldn’t shock me.
10) Dylan Carlson – Avg could be better, but pretty good showing at high A as a 19 year old.
I need to read up more on the guys they’ve gotten in trades lately. Based on the little I’ve read on them, G Cabrera seems like he could be a great LH reliever in a short time. Justin Williams, Conner Capel and Shrock I’m not nearly as optimistic about.
This is a major toss up for me between Montero and Knizner.

Montero’s power potential is coming around and will likely do so more as he ages (XBH 12% of his AB’s)
Montero in his age 19 season was 6’3″ and 195 lbs already, with Gorman not far behind, 1B or OF might be in his future regardless, but the bat seems like it will play anywhereThat being said, my vote for #5 is Montero.
I make that trade all day long and twice on Sunday if I’m the Cards! Bregman alone would be worth it.
Unfortunately it takes the other team to agree to it and I don’t see them giving him up for that.
I’m in full support of Knizner being the heir to Yadi (which I’ve probably over promoted trading Kelly on other threads), but my vote for #4 has to be for Gorman due to upside and potential all stardom.
Gorman at #3 for me, the upside after not stinking it up in full season ball (minus BA) is to much not to love. If he’s going to end up as a superstar talent, 19 in Springfield at the end of the year(2019), would be a very good start.
You’re correct that if he didn’t go to the minors/get optioned to the minors then you are correct and he has this year at the minimum and then 3 arb years. If he’s sent down and off the 25 man, his service clock stops I believe. He would have to be active in ST, but then can be sent down. I could be wrong on part of that? Anyone have a better understanding?
Good memories Stlcard25, I’m roughly your age and was in HS at the time. I know I had gotten home from golf practice and turned it on, I was watching with my mom and lil brother who was just becoming a fan at that time and I think that summer was the one that got him committed to the Cards. In my hometown it’s about 49/49/2 (Cards/Cubs/Sox) so that was important looking back on it! And now, we both live in Chicago and are both within 1.5 miles from Wrigley.
Side note, I hope the last series of the year at Wrigley is meaningful, if they could somehow get within 3 of the Cubs, that would be a lot of fun!
In regards to Nunez and Torres and possibly a good tool to rank them, to those of you who are experienced using Fangraphs or one of those sites, is there a way to filter the top 10 in OPS, under 18, over a certain period of time (past 3-8 years ago as an example)? It would be interesting to see how they have turned out several years down the road.
Mspaid, are you implying Gant has more value than Weaver at this point? Not disagreeing at all, but that would have been hard to believe a year ago!
I’ve been impressed with Wisdom (Small Sample Size Alert), but a cheap back up infield of Munoz and Wisdom isn’t bad at all.
Someone mentioned 10 SP’s ready to go, which is spot on.
CMart, Flaherty, and Mikolas are almost certainly locks (assuming health of course). I’d like to have Gomber as the #5 guy, just to mix in a lefty. So for one spot they have the following options:
-Reyes (hoping they don’t waste him in the BP since they only have 4 years of control left)
-Weaver
-Wacha
-Gant
-Ponce
-Hudson
-Waino possibly back?
-Helsley ready?
-Hicks stretched out?Let’s assume they need the main 5 plus 3 ready in AAA to fill in as needed so 4 out of that group is needed. It would be great if Reyes could spend April and into May in AAA making only a few starts to save his arm for the long season and more importantly, delay his service clock a year. They say they don’t do that, but look at Vlad Jr in Toronto…
My starting 5 would be: CMart, Mikolas, Flaherty, Gomber and Waino/Wacha
Wacha only has one year left, and an initial reaction would be trade him, but after his health issues, he simply wouldn’t bring back what he can offer in upside. Unless they plan to spend big on a FA, they don’t need to worry about the money. If Waino shows healthy and acceptable the next few weeks and wants to keep pitching, I just don’t se how they don’t give him a contract with what he’s done for the organization.
Reyes, Hudson or Gant and Ponce would be my choice to start in AAA and stay stretched out to start. Helsley would be the 4th and will likely be ready mid season for at least spot starts.
That makes Weaver and Gant and/or Hudson expendable and they need the 40 man spots. Package together Kelly, Hudson, Weaver, Carson Kelly and J-Mart, would that get Torres?
Would Weaver, Hudson and Kelly get the conversation started for Syndergaard?
I don’t see them trading Torres and if they would the asking would be something like Weaver, Hudson, Kelly + more. That would be a great LT addition though….
I’ve been trying to think of a 3B or 1B who’s a MOO bat that could be available and more than a 1 year rental. The only player that I can think of is Votto. I don’t follow the AL as closely, any ideas?
Does anyone else feel that the Cards are somewhat “wasting” Carson Kelly? With regular at bats he seems like a very good prospect and all reports say he’s great behind the plate, but he hasn’t had a real chance to get settled in and Molina doesn’t seem to be declining or ready to retire anytime soon.
Especially with Knizner not far behind, I think this offseason he’s a must trade (last off season would have been better in hindsight). They can get by with the Pena types until Yadi starts to decline and also have Knizner waiting in the wings.
Any thoughts on what a package of Kelly, Jose Martinez and one of the young pitchers (like Gant or Ponce) would bring back? I would have to believe something pretty solid.
Is there any easy way to look at top ten OPS guys in the DSL over the 10yr to 5yr ago time frame and their stats since? I’ve tried 30-40 different ways and can’t get a thing.
Hudson is official at #2 I assume?
Gorman is my #3 pick, what he did at his age (minus the BA at full season) with the power numbers is something special. Random reports say he can stick at 3rd, I base that on what I’ve read only so take that with a grain of salt.
With the “Big 3 3B prospects” the cards have, signing someone like Donaldson for 2 years actually fits quite perfectly. Elehuris M likely won’t get the love he deserves doing what he did at 19…. Nunez,same because of the league but WOW on his numbers, and at a proper age.
A year ago I recall seeing how the Cards have Wisdom as a 3B prospect and no one else, how things can change in a year….. turned out fantastic on this “issue”!

I would vote for T.O. here, but he will surely lose eligibility so I will go with Hudson at #2. I will add that Gorman sure is tempting to vote for….
Kinzner is looking like the real deal in ST and in the AFL on top of his year last year, I’m starting to think he’s the successor to Yadi…..
Kelly has a ton of trade value, which will likely diminish if he only gets to play once a week.
I still think they need to add a proven starter even with the young guys in the system and they need a proven closer, Archer and Colome would be a great addition.
If the Cards offered Kelly, Bader and Hudson, would that get it done?
Bader would be a great 4th OF this year, but the need for a CF isn’t as important since the starting 3 are all more than capable of playing CF. There are plenty of FA’s out there if they aren’t comfortable with the in house options.
A year of Alex Reyes team control was unfortunately lost last year, and I’m hoping they don’t waste any of his service time in the BP. According to BR, he has 1.055 on the service time clock. Usually the super 2 cut off is like April 19th-22nd for a new player (Bryant day in Chicago a few years ago was awful)
On that note, if he spends (55+22) 77 or so days in the minors they would gain an extra year of team control correct? If they slowly extend his innings per game in the minors and at the same time keep them down overall, he could be a great July 1st addition to the rotation to finish out the year. Is my math correct or am I missing something?
Regarding the whole Piscotty to A’s rumors, Khris Davis is estimated to make 12M in arbitration this year, Piscotty will make $1M. What about Piscotty and Bader for Davis? Saves them a ton and sends them a RF and CF for cheap and with a lot of upside…… I wonder if Davis could play 1st?
I’m very curious how other teams/GM’s value Pham? Has anyone heard anything in regards to that?
