#8-Ryan Helsley. Hurt this year but I see a mid rotation ceiling with the floor of a back end starter or very good reliever/closer type. He’s not unlike Trevor Rosenthal, although Rosey was a more highly thought of starter than Helsley. I’m looking forward to seeing him in 2019. I liked him better than Hudson coming into the year, although Dakota had a great year this year.
#9-Randy Arozarena. People will look at the less than great line in Memphis and dock him, but this is only his second year in the US. He DOMINATED in his stints at Springfield this year and I honestly expect that he’ll be above average next year in his second pass with the Redbirds. His walk and K rates are oddly fluctuating, but the Ks are never super high. I see 20-20 potential, or a 4th OF at worst who can play all three positions. Call him Tommy Pham Lite, perhaps without the attitude.
#10-Lane Thomas. My initial pass had Adolis Garcia here, and I think Adolis has a shot to stick at the big league level. But Lane has a better ceiling due to a better approach at the plate. He looks like a possible Grichuk out there, and I don’t mean that as a slight. He’ll probably always strike out too much, which makes him an AAA-MLB downside guy, but the power seems legit and next year could see him take a big jump. I’d hope for him to cut the strikeouts back a little (which Grichuk could never do) and see where he is a year from now.
I like Nunez, but has anyone even seen a real scouting report on the guy yet? Seems like it’s sort of assumed he’ll be a tweener 3B-1B guy, but the error totals were good and he’s been excellent with the bat wherever he’s played. His distance from the majors wouldn’t let me put him in the top 20, let alone top 10. Does his great DSL performance put him ahead of Dylan Carlson, for instance… who’s two years older and performed pretty well 3 levels higher? Lane Thomas who at 22 is knocking on the door of the big leagues?? Ponce, who is actually in the majors?
Sorry for the douse of cold water, but let him get to America first, IMO.
8. Malcom Nunez The next Pujols as a hitter? We can dream, can’t we?
Added: Normally, I would agree with you, stlcard25. You make great points. But after seeing video of him, I guess I got one of those middle school crushes. I just can’t fight it. Lol
9. Daniel Poncedeleon I’m so glad some of y’all have already brought him up. I was afraid he might be overlooked because of his age. But his major league numbers prove his prospect status. He has a real shot at a spot in the rotation next year, and in my mind, that’s a Top Ten prospect.
10. Ryan Helsley I considered Lane Thomas and Adolis Garcia here, but went with Helsley based on his whole body of work. Hopefully, he can get a full season next year and see some time in the bigs.
Since I can’t have Montero twice, how about Poncedeleon. I didn’t think someone who has pitched in the majors as much would still be eligible.
25, Bob Reed taught me not to ignore DSL guys. He had Taveras pegged from the DSL even with a .731 OPS. My list this year will be the youngest ever. It will probably have 8-10 guys from JC or lower including 3-4 DSL guys.

10 Baker – 2C draft pick ’18, 6’4″ 1B, moved up from GCL after 24 ABs to Peoria and batted .308 in July. Has power with low K/rate. 21 years old and could touch Springfield if he continues on with his production. Has a high ceiling of potential. Presently TCN’s # 13… #12 with Gomber graduating.I fear the love everyone is showing Helsley is somewhat overblown. There is a lot of Dennis Dove there. A high effort straight fastball often wild and high out of the zone now with lingering injury questions. I’ve been following but not voting since I’m catching up every few days, so ignoring my view is understood, but I’ve watched him three or four times & he reminds way more of Dove though his delivery is more Rosenthal.

9. Daniel Poncedeleon – He starts his major league career with 7 no-hit innings and carries a 2.81era into today’s play in 32 innings. How did he fall this low? He’s always been an underdog, but he’s proved himself at every level.
10. Ryan Helsley – Another under the radar player, Helsley has developed nicely into a power pitcher and just like Ponce has had to prove himself worthy of being noted with the top prospects. Should at least make 2019 bullpen.
QUESTION; If Pasadena has the Rose Bowl for football. Does it also have an Arozarena for Hockey???
I really thought 8-10 voting would be muddied but there is a strong consensus on who the next 3 guys are going to be.
8) Nunez – This is way to high to rank someone yet to play in the states, but the upside is equivalent of a risky #1 overall pick in the draft, IMO of course.
9) Ponce – Proved he can do it in the bigs already, very solid #4-5 starter at the worst, or possibly the second piece of a trade wouldn’t shock me.
10) Dylan Carlson – Avg could be better, but pretty good showing at high A as a 19 year old.
I need to read up more on the guys they’ve gotten in trades lately. Based on the little I’ve read on them, G Cabrera seems like he could be a great LH reliever in a short time. Justin Williams, Conner Capel and Shrock I’m not nearly as optimistic about.
I, for one, would not ignore your view, Nigel T. The more views the better. Especially if you have seen the guy pitch in person. But Dennis Dove is certainly a jarring name from the past that makes me say, “Please say it’s not so!”

Nunez – Position player of the year, DSL.
Cedeno – All-Star, rookie team level – all leaguesHelsley does not strike me as someone who could come in throwing gas out of the pen with much success. He sits 93 to 96 most of the time and his storied triple digits are usually not at all pinpoint and a contrast to the off speed stuff he works off.
I like Helsley by the way, but he is more Genesis Cabrera territory in the mid to late teens with Lane Thomas, Dylan Carlson, Patrick Wisdom, Luken Baker, Randy Arozarena, and the great Nunez all way ahead of Helsley.
#8. Nunez – I have said I learned from the past and would wait until DSL success made it to the states. But winning the triple crown while 17 years old is to much to overlook. Still do not understand how is was available for $300k. Also taking the angle if he was state side and in the draft as a 18 year old next June. You got to think he is first round material. Not uncommon for a first rounder to jump into top 10 in draft position and potential.
#9. Carlson – slumped and struggled at times but basically he held his own as 19 year old in high A. Saw a little power develop. Could see 2 youngsters (he and Montero) reaching AA next year.
#10. Cabrera- was a nice surprise looks to have good velocity and some nice breaking stuff to go with the fastball.
