What a way to end it!

Maybe Urias was playing hurt earlier. He has a considerable track record as a slightly better than MLB average hitter and a plus defender including a Gold Glove. My guess is they will play him, unless Jordan finds another gear between now and then.
I imagine he would have been traded at the deadline if he had been healthy and playing ok at the time. He wasn’t and he wasn’t.
Yes, Urias will be back very soon, assuming he stays healthy. As a result, either Prieto (my guess) or Jordan will return to Triple-A. Whichever one stays will likely be glued to the bench, anyway.
The plan coming into the year was that Urias would be veteran insurance in case Gorman fizzled. The first part happened, but the plan fell apart when Urias was injured.
This BA fixation is odd.
Known vs. unknown. Pereira will get a shot with a very low bar set to exceed. Nelson finished on a 2-for-22 (.091) stretch with 12 strikeouts. Pretty much an automatic out.
The #stlcards system was 2-3 on Saturday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Peoria SS Jalin Flores, hit two doubles and a home run for five RBIs. Other standouts: Ramón Urías, Josiah Ragsdale, Ryan Weingartner, Trevor Haskins, Jaden Alba, Michael Cordero, Jhon Franganten… pic.twitter.com/snCZyK8KLU

August 8, 2026 at 7:36 pm in reply to: St. Louis 2026 Game #117 thread – Saturday, August 8 vs. Colorado Rockies #315647Especially for leadoff, shouldn’t you look at their OBPs instead of BA? Surely that can’t be too “new school”. After all, the Moneyball movie came out 15 years ago! 😉
Velazquez’s DFA is official.
When they put Hence on waivers, it suggested to me that they had given up and were prepared to move on.
Earlier this season, they already tried the “Development List, send to Florida” thing.

I am not disagreeing, but I see it a bit differently.

He was arguably the most impressive player in spring training but surprisingly didn’t make the team which seemed to set him back mentally.
I think we know that he is the guy since spring training much more than the one who spiked in March.
What is strange to me is that the Cardinals surely knew when they signed Velázquez that he was a platoon DH bat out of options but are now getting rid of him because he is demonstrating he is a platoon DH bat out of options.
I don’t see it being much different than the disposable pitchers that came on and then off the 40-man during the season, intended to fill short term needs. Nelson gave them more than average – 83 MLB PAs and another 163 for Memphis.
If the Cards can shore up what has been a dismal bench, I’m all for them trying it.
This may sound callous, but I hope Nelson declares FA so the young OFs at Memphis don’t lose ABs to a journeyman.
Breaking News: According to my sources, the Pittsburgh Pirates have released Dominican slugger Marcell Ozuna.

Your opinion and that of the voters may not be the same. It is certainly not the same as the oddsmakers. Per ESPN, the current odds are:

Notes from the Cardinals about the current rotation:
Cardinals starting pitchers have provided the team with excellent stability, pitching to a 3.97 ERA that ranks 4th in the NL behind Division leaders MIL (3.36), LAD (3.56) and ATL (3.77)…the Cardinals 44 Quality Starts rank 3rd in the loop behind just the Dodgers (60) and Phillies (50)…tonight’s starter Kyle Leahy (1.38) owned the NL’s top starter ERA in July – it was the team’s best July mark since 2009 when Adam Wainwright (1.17) & Joel Pineiro (1.22) had stellar Julys.
The #stlcards Triple-A Mempihs Redbirds went 3-3 on the week as Nolan Gorman’s four home runs tied for the league lead. The third baseman plated eight and had a 1.178 OPS. https://t.co/i67QkIQSnb pic.twitter.com/Iinoy6C9Pj

August 7, 2026 at 11:20 am in reply to: St. Louis 2026 Game #116 thread – Friday, August 7 vs. Colorado Rockies #315507mud, regarding Pallante, I don’t recall the Cards trading other arbitration eligible players with three controllable years remaining. Maybe in a couple of years, but I fully expect Andre to be on the 2027 team (and probably 2028 also unless a young gun is ready by then to displace him).
FWIW, I don’t think the Cardinals are close to having too many pitching prospects, starters or relievers. If a guy is not good enough compared to his competition to start any more, move him to the pen.
They haven’t made an announcement on Pereira, but my assumption is that when he reports, he will take Nootbaar’s outfield spot on the StL roster with Prieto returning to Memphis.
There have been about 70 transactions this week. I have laid them all out in three separate articles, the most recent covering yesterday’s 20 moves. The Roster Matrix and our team rosters are also up to date.
They canceled the entire draft in 2021. My assumption is they will do the same in 2026, but it is not guaranteed. There is a lot of prep work in setting special rosters in advance of Rule 5 that they probably won’t want to deal with. Further, the draft is held at the Winter Meetings, which they also will not have if there is a lockout.
The #stlcards made another 20 transactions yesterday, some undoing ones made a few days ago. The first position players from the draft begin play, a new 40-man outfielder joins and much more. https://t.co/zWB3trx49K pic.twitter.com/e9WsFzydUb

The #stlcards system was 1-3 on Thursday. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Springfield outfielder Won-Bin Cho, collected two RBI and stole a base in his first four-hit game at Double-A.
