Just 89 starters who have thrown 100 innings across baseball this season. The Cardinals have 5 of them (if I include May who pitched over 100 with St Louis).
Kyle Leahy (#29) – 3.44 ERA
Michael McGreevey (#36) – 3.59 ERA
Andre Pallante (#39) – 3.63 ERA
Dustin May (#68) – 4.38 ERA
Matthew Liberatore (#79) – 4.97 ERAThat’s basically 3 #2 pitchers, a #3, and a #4 or 5. A lot better than what most anyone expected.
The Cardinals had so many starter prospect injuries it is the durable survivors who ended up in the rotation, so it has been stable. They will try to improve performance by inserting guys who look amazing in between IL stints and the stability will go away.
Good day, sunshine! I guess if the Cardinals have enough of them on hand, they can get by somehow. Or to fill the gap, they’ll go out and buy a rebounding type like May, who I bet that based on his track record, you gave him little hope to contribute when he was signed.
Wow, 28th. Never thought I would see the day the Cardinals were that far down the payroll hierarchy. But then times have changed – my sense is there just is not the passion around Cardinal baseball in the area like there was for so many years.
You guys will like watching the Rockies. They are similar to us in that they are essentially a young club with a lot of heart. They get after it, and play with enthusiasm. The main difference in them and our club is our bullpen is better, or at least has been better, and our starting rotation is probably a bit better as well.
Ugh….
Hate to say this but Bregman hit a two out two run homer in the 9th to tie the game 2-2 against Toronto. And then the Cubs won it 3-2 in 11 innings.
With the Cardinals not being a contender, I have trouble working up the intensity of Cub hate I have always had. Yeah, I hope they spiral into baseball hell but I get less satisfaction thinking about it.
Taking a look at the NL, the Braves have now reeled off 8 consecutive W’s to push the Phillies out of the picture regarding a division title, and over in the AL it’s getting pretty stupid in Boston as the Red Sox have also won 8 games in row and are now 31-5 since late June.
A few thoughts …
The starting pitching stat is impressive. Add to this that no starter has really suffered any injury over this season and last (knock on wood!). Tells me the Redbirds are doing something well!
I expect another “May-like” signing this offseason. Tampa has done this with success over time. I think Bloom will follow this model to plug any perceived rotation holes.
The payroll number is actually good news to me. The team now has the flexibility to offer long-term contracts to the youngsters they want to build around (e.g. Wetherholt deal). Further, I feel the organization has put in place more scouting and development resources. This should result in better signing decisions (prospects and veterans) as well as improved player performance.
This team has exceeded the expectations of many. I am excited to see how they finish and how things develop during the offseason!

Some good thoughts ‘64. I like most of what the club is doing much more than the year-by-year model that Mo employed over his last half dozen or so years.
No TV for me this weekend with the blackout of Rockies games, so will dial up Rooney & Horton when I can. Meanwhile I am heading up to the old home town for a high school reunion, so not much chance to watch anyway. Always nice visiting the old haunts and seeing my sisters and brothers-in-law.
Pallante’s ERA has been steadily dropping as he gains more and more confidence. He’s controlling his knuckle curve well and itv has become a reliable pitch for him. He’s just now entering his prime, and he’s up for arbitration. I guess that means he gets traded. But for what? The Cardinals don’t need any more prospects for now. It’s about time to start putting together a winning team. It might take 2 or 3 years for Hunter Dobbins to reach the level that Pallante is at now, IMO.
The Cub game yesterday was nauseating. I still get plenty of pleasure watching them lose. Unfortunately they are on a hot streak and will probably walz into KC this weekend and get a sweep. The Brewers had better keep their foot on the pedal.
With the Cards not really a realistic contender presently I find rooting for the Cubs to lose as one of my regular pastimes. Hopefully one of the Dodgers, Brewers, Braves, or Phillies will knock them out in the postseason.
mud, regarding Pallante, I don’t recall the Cards trading other arbitration eligible players with three controllable years remaining. Maybe in a couple of years, but I fully expect Andre to be on the 2027 team (and probably 2028 also unless a young gun is ready by then to displace him).
FWIW, I don’t think the Cardinals are close to having too many pitching prospects, starters or relievers. If a guy is not good enough compared to his competition to start any more, move him to the pen.

I had to make the trip to Indy today for work and made the stop into Gasthof on the way home. So here’s to some good luck catfish today!
You guys are killin me. My area is a catfish desert. I just get a bag of frozen breaded fillets from Walmart and cook them in the air fryer. They turn out exactly the same as any I can get in a restaurant around here, if I can even find any.

Excellent! Glad I’m not the only one that had catfish fiddlers today. After all, it is a CCFF.For the uninformed that’s Cardinals Catfish Fiddlers Friday.
I wonder if Pugs also had some fiddlers today? I bet he had his cinammon pies though.
And bling, that’s still pretty close. Just do your best.
Oh, and the Cubs lead the Royals 4-1 at Kaufmann Stadium.
Plus Boston might win one today. They are up 11-1.
Minnesota jumped in front of the Brewers at County Stadium. 6-4 in the last of the 5th. But the Brewers have the bases loaded and nobody out.
Din-din tonight was baked salmon, rice with some dill and parmesan, corn on the cob, washed down with some Irish stout and dessert of frozen Girl Scouts thin mints. I just yesterday started to cook fish. Maybe I’ll need to learn about fiddlers.
I liked Herrera’s HR in part because it was on two strikes and he’d fouled off a few. Here’s hoping it’s a sign of things to come.
8 strikeouts and no walks for Leahy through 5. Add me to the group pleasantly surprised by this rotation. They could use a top of the rotation ace or two, but they’ll keep you in most games. Problems are the bullpen and low production, especially CF, LF, and 3B.
