His BA is third on the team which is not unkind.
I’m not going to debate the importance of batting average with you. or the fact that being third on a team with a .255 avg. is anything to brag about. But his obp is .279. His SLG is .372. OPS .651. HR 1. Those aren’t kind #’s. And really, they aren’t the issue. The issue is we can’t put a better player than that on the field.
For some the idea that we have improved how we value players in the last 50 years must be pure blasphemy. I would absolutely hope in 50 years people doing anything in any industry would be better as staying stagnant isn’t a good sign.
Blaze has been okay to me. Like KCB said, his offensive stats overall have been not that impressive. He has a 76 wRC+ which for a 3B especially isn’t acceptable. But he is the best option the team has as of now and his defense has been leaps and bounds better than I expected.
To me, the biggest uncertainty in the future of the team at the moment are 3B and CF. Neither at the major league level nor minors is there someone I am really sold on long term. Jesus Baez at 3B with Tai Peete and Josiah Ragsdale are the guys with potential 2028 impact. But all 3 have major questions offensively with their ability to make contact and if they can hit at the big league level.
I root for each and every young man who wears Cardinal Red except for the rare guy like the one who just got booted from Pittsburgh. But that doesn’t make them all major league players. ATM has it figured. Blaze is starting because there isn’t anyone else. Reminds me of the year Floyd Rayford played third for us for part of a season.
Ollie and the wonks don’t think Jordan needs to play every day anyway, so its all likely a moot discussion. I had thought they might be serious about giving him some runway and trying to develop him, but I am having doubts. Still, how things shake out there is one of the interesting sub plots.
Let Blaze play. He runs pretty fast when he’s chasing a ball that just skipped past his glove.
Bernie Miklas has a nice report on Gorman’s recent resurrection at Memphis. Sort it out next spring.
ATM is correct in that we currently have no answers at 3B and CF. I would even add LF to that mix. Baez is still an unknown at this level and Church and Torres are really better suited as 4th OF’s to be honest.
Yes people want to piss and moan about the roster construction but the bottom line is we have no better options that what were lining up especially in the lower part of the order.
Idk if Blaze is a major league player or if he’s a AAAA player. He’s glove has been ok at 3rd at times. Hitting is meh.
Idk what the story is with Urias. He is playing in Memphis. Might we (gulp) see a call up?
Just because Baez can play multiple infield positions doesn’t mean he’s great at any of them. He does have a good arm. Clearly his offense will be his calling card if he can keep it up.
Yes, Urias will be back very soon, assuming he stays healthy. As a result, either Prieto (my guess) or Jordan will return to Triple-A. Whichever one stays will likely be glued to the bench, anyway.
The plan coming into the year was that Urias would be veteran insurance in case Gorman fizzled. The first part happened, but the plan fell apart when Urias was injured.
It made sense to have the veteran backup for Gorman heading into the season, but I am not sure what sense it makes to play him now. Besides, he was hitting .158 when he went on the IL.
Maybe Urias was playing hurt earlier. He has a considerable track record as a slightly better than MLB average hitter and a plus defender including a Gold Glove. My guess is they will play him, unless Jordan finds another gear between now and then.
I imagine he would have been traded at the deadline if he had been healthy and playing ok at the time. He wasn’t and he wasn’t.
Even without advanced metrics Jordan’s offense is not great. If this were 50 years ago I would probably be saying, “his .255 mark is third on the team but it’s a soft .255 with only one homer and 7 doubles. He has legged out 3 triples though.”
A third sacker needs to be more productive. But the reason I am okay playing him is he is young, and has under 200 ABs. That is nowhere near enough to call for a replacement. I have seen enough of him to put him in the mix as a potential future regular. Whether he takes the next steps time will tell.
