I doubt he walk away from the $$$, but it is interesting nonetheless.

The Cardinals announced their July honorees and threw a bit of a curve. They chose Tanner Franklin over Mathews and for the second time this season, they had Gurevitch share the Top Player honors, this time with Leo Bernal.

There is history here. The trenches have been dug in the same places as before. Owners demand a cap. Players say never. How long will it take for either to budge?

As I speculated on the podcast, I wonder if this overriding issue will keep them from negotiating on the many other issues that must also be resolved. I’d feel a lot better if there was any positive news, even on relatively minor matters.

Signs of trouble in Dodgerland? Not for making $2B on a one-year investment. The other part.

Timely reminder. Judge is injured, Miles is unemployed and Herrera is still there.

Another point to consider. Second basemen are easier to find and they already have a ready-made SS replacement under a long term contract.

Today, sports “media” is much broader and less structured than ever. Hot takes and being first matter more than being accurate. Come to think of it, I guess it isn’t just sports media.

Trying too hard to sell merch. These alternate identities were being pushed all across MLB. (In the minors, they are crazy.)

The Cards also moved Van Dyke at Peoria and Holiday at Palm Beach to the Dev List. All three pitched on Tuesday.

As noted, his comparison bar was set very low. An above-average MLB player would be just fine as a stop gap.

How came any praise is derisively called “hype”? The guy had a good game with the bat and glove and positively affected the outcome. Give him that. No one is talking about Cooperstown here.

I hope this isn’t considered sacrilege, but I consider all media, whether broadcasters or writers, on a different level below the actual athletes. The annual awards for broadcasters (Frick) and writers (Career Excellence) are given out at Cooperstown and they have an area in the museum, but the Hall of Fame is very careful to not label them as Hall of Famers. IMO, that is the way it should be. They are important, but without the players, they would have nothing to cover.
