why assume the Cub hitters will bounce back but the Cardinal hitters won’t?
Maybe Bader will bounce back to 2019 and hit .205 and DeJong .230. Hopefully Carlson would bounce back to hitting .280 in the Texas League in 2019 instead of .240 in Florida State League in 2018.
If anyone is projecting the Cubs to win, it might be that their hitters probably have some cred to bounce back to rather some furious cherry picking as to who we want to bounce back to what and who we don’t.
Those Reds of ‘75-76 are among the greatest teams of all-time. I still consider them the greatest National League teams ever.
bicyclemike, back in the later 70s I can recall some fearsome arguments among old timers over whether the 75 Reds were better than the 27 Yankees. I worked in Johnson City during the summer and the Yankees had just moved out their minor league team so there were a lot of folks around who didn’t want to hear about the Reds maybe being better.
With a limited sample, like ST, guys can play better than their numbers. They can play worse than their numbers. There is context that matters.
I know Yadi benefitted a lot from Matheney who was a world class defensive catcher. But I do not remember the particulars. Not sure how the Yadi/Knizner dynamic would compare.
I posted a response earlier but I guess it didn’t take. Its not here at least. While it is nice having a gold glove in LF, we really need to use that position to house a middle of the order hitter to complement Goldy and Arenado. DeJong would benefit from not being forced into that role. I see Thomas more as the CF type where the offense/defense balance is different. If he could hit middle of order that would be great. If not, we need to keep looking. Maybe Gorman in time is a plausible in house candidate. I don’t see anything else.
I haven’t seen any games yet, and listened to bits and pieces a few times is all. But my impression is Thomas can play some and came to play. Anybody have thoughts on that?
Also, I think Carp’s BA is .000 as of now. He worked on bat speed over the off season I believe. Do we have any idea how he is doing as far as that goes? How does he look at the plate?
I agree some guys will beat their projections. Hopefully by 50 BA points. It would make an interesting exercise for someone with time on their hands to check projections for other teams’ batters to determine if all are similarly victimized by the 2020 season.
I am relieved to know that we know something they don’t.
Lane Thomas has been getting some hits here early. Drafted back in 2014 so its his 8th year as a pro. That alone says ceiling is not too lofty. I guess he’s plan B in CF.
If they are right it is indeed bleak. Offensively, we’ve got Goldy and Arenado and nothing else. No Arozarenas among the gaggle of outfielders. Any sort of optimism for the offense relies upon the hope that a few guys will do something other than what they have done, which BA obviously thinks is not likely.
I just got a look at the box score. We’re doomed.
I thought there was a mercy rule.
A ST lineup if there ever was one.
It’s not like we don’t have candidates for the rotation.
I have a story that can rival cranny’s. During the 1985 season, an older man I worked with, and talked baseball with, who had years earlier been a teammate of Earl Weaver in the minors, invited me to ride with him to Kansas City to see the Orioles vs Royals as guests of the Orioles. After the game I found myself having dinner at a table with Earl, Cal Ripkin, Sr. and others. Earl told a story about a time he was vehemently arguing a point with Don Denkenger and he threw his hat on the ground. Denkenger stomped on it grinding it into the dirt. He had unkind things to say about Don. A few months later we know what happened in game 6 of the World Series.
Bader didn’t get any hits today, the bum.
Reyes has thrown to 3 batters without getting injured. That’s all we can say so far. I hope he makes it to opening day in any role.
Early ST is always cycling a lot of guys into games to get a look at them. In a couple weeks or so we will see more of the regulars and get an idea of any possible opening day roster surprises. Then we can panic or salivate as the case may be.
It looks like Nooty wore the collar today. Bad Nooty.
Pinch ran, jeesh. Really underutilized. Need to open that toolbox.
My man Nooty, sleeper extraordinaire, shows up in the box score as DH, but no AB or BB, all zeros. There are other ways a PA can result in no AB, can someone tell me what his appearance consisted of?
I agree it was rather impressive. But even with a pretty impressive run with NY added to it, he barely got the 5% each year to stay on the HOF ballet. He was real good with a rather impressive record. I also remember the TV camera catching him having a smoke in the dugout a few times. Times change.
I consider body of work as a Cardinal to be what the team HoF is about. I am happy with the current membership. Unless we want to make it the Hall of Real Good.
There is a school of thought that a team should always be on the lookout to upgrade its #8 hitter.
Look at positives cranny. We got a pitcher who looked good in A ball. Needed one of those.
The P-D / stltoday article featuring Flaherty’s ‘I was terrible” comment brought out a ton of Flaherty hate in the reader comments. He rubs a lot of people the wrong way in a big way it seems.
