Walker on the Carlson collision: “What we’ve been taught is … the center fielder once he calls you off, you stop. Until then, you’re giving 100 percent effort. That’s what I was doing, giving 100 percent effort. If he called me off, I’m sorry if I didn’t hear him.” John Denton on X.

The Cardinals are lucky to not lose Walker until the AS break with a broken leg from a collision like that. It would be understandable if Walker looks a bit timid closing on the center fielder for a while.

In the old days, the way that works is the corner outfielders goes hard for the ball unless and until called off by the center fielder. Don’t know how the kids now days play it,

I wouldn’t have thought a ST crowd would be loud enough to impede communication.

I wonder what the Tigers think about their $14M pitcher not being 100% focused on ST and getting his career out of the weeds.

I bet BDW is happy it’s not his $14M.

I’ve never seen Saggese but a couple things can be deduced. The first is anyone you get for a rental is not going to be all sunshine and no rain. The other is if he had a left side arm they wouldn’t have made him a second baseman early on. I’m interested to see how he looks at AAA.

I don’t have a feel for who will do what, but I do feel like it is an impressive group of names. It may take a few weeks to sort out who are the better performers, and who fits in what role, but I do not think our pen will be terrible like we thought last spring.

Yes, sorry for the clumsy wording, Brian. I meant the commenting universe, including on the TCN forum, (and probably including me at some point).

If the rule 5 guy sticks, obviously that knocks somebody out who would have otherwise made it.

Edman is a really good IF/OF super UT. Carlson is a CF capable OF who dosn’t hit righties. It’s not like comparing a Cadillac and a Chevy. We are not going to have a Cadillac in the lineup and in CF either way. Its probably not going to add or subtract wins to any extent that will matter.

Thank goodness for those ST OPSs if they put Kozma in the batters box in the ninth vs Drew Storen in game 5 of the 2012 NLDS. One of the most thrilling moments in my many decades as a fan.

Lynn had single digits IP this spring, before today. So today wouldn’t really be representative of what he will do throughout the season. But the season opens in 4 days, so he and the organization are out of time to get him ready.

Its almost out of time to get everyone ready, but I see all the regulars came out early today, even Winn who is batting barely .200. Maybe they think a couple more PAs wouldn’t do him any good. Maybe they thought getting another look at Saggese at short was more important. Maybe they weren’t thinking at all, lets go with that.

With Edman out indefinitely, Carlson has another prime chance.

If Carlson is an automatic out vs righties, which would not be surprising, his “prime chance” could end whenever either Edman or Noot returns. Not that Noot is great in CF, but he is better there than some of our corner outfielders are at their positions, so I do not think it would be an impediment for a while.

Gags if you like Burly’s 2022 MiLb OPS you should like Yepez’s 2021 just as much. (He’s a year older).

I did plainly state that whatever the difference defensively, it doesn’t matter, because neither is going to carry a slot on an active roster unless they justify it with the bat.

The thing that keeps Burleson from following the Yepez trajectory precisely is that he is a 2nd rounder rather than being the take for Matt Adams.

It could be argued who is worse than who defensively, but it doesn’t matter. For both of them, the need to hit enough to be useful is paramount. Yepez had 339 PA spread over two seasons with OPS+ 97. Burleson is at 400 PAs over two seasons with OPS+ 83, which is hugely worse than 97. Burly strikes out less but has shown less power. Neither gets on base enough, sporting low OBPs. The bottom line is they are more alike than different.

Once Burleon is out of options it will not be possible to carry him on the 40 man and keep him in the organization. His draft pedigree and lack of trade value may keep him around until then.

Keeping it contained to a rogue employee sounds familiar…

Indeed. And how a rogue employee might be persuaded to roll with that will make a good read. Someday.

Robertson doesn’t seem llke he’s been talked about much, perhaps for good reason. Both O’Neill and Flaherty were mentioned here and elsewhere, right up until the end, as featured pieces of various trade scenarios to acquire front line players. The reality of their trade value was very different.

I just heard the country music song Adam Wainwright just released. I am only an occasional listener of Country but it seemed the equal of anything on the radio. Good voice for the genre. Good for him.

I envision a scenario where the tout Bernal sees the new guy Hernandez in his rear view mirror, getting larger and larger.

Bernal, having skipped FCL, seems to have spent his second PB year learning how to take a walk, at the expense of a plummeting SLG. I assume the org wants him to start at Peoria as the featured catcher there and Hernandez in that role at PB. We will see how Bernal takes to life away from the Complex, bus rides through the cornfields in the middle of nowhere. Watching how my imaginary scenario plays out will be an interesting sub-plot this season.

It does not make sense to me to think about the 2025 rotation concern as centered on two slots. For one thing, father time concerns apply to everybody, and Mikolas will be as old in 2025 and Gibson and Lynn are now. We will need to keep an eye on his performance as the season wears on. And then there is Matz, who has had perpetual health and performance problems since he arrived.

Looking at the potential internal solutions we have to remember that nobody has yet demonstrated the ability to dominate AAA hitters other than now and then when they have a good day. Roby seems the best bet stuff wise, but bum shoulder guys do not usually work out. So the bottom line is Mo could end up in the same boat all over again next winter. Potentially, he could keep Gibson and Lynn and still need to find two guys.
