3:10 p.m. CT
RHP Jack Flaherty (0-0, 12.46) vs. RHP Pablo Lopez (0-0, 0.00)
BSM // MLBN // KMOXApril 7, 2021 at 12:42 am #157288I’d like to Nogowski in LF, and either Carlson or O’Neill in center. Because I do not want Carp to start it means Williams would get another start in RF.
April 7, 2021 at 8:09 am #157301I’m going to say that Flaherty cuts his ERA in half today.

ParticipantThat exit velocity by Williams on a hit in ST was impressive, but he belongs at alternative camp and then Memphis.
April 7, 2021 at 1:14 pm #1573451. Tommy Edman (S) RF
2. P. Goldschmidt (R) 1B
3. Nolan Arenado (R) 3B
4. Paul DeJong (R) SS
5. Matt Carpenter (L) 2B
6. Yadier Molina (R) C
7. Tyler O’Neill (R) LF
8. Dylan Carlson (S) CF
9. Jack Flaherty (R) PApril 7, 2021 at 1:19 pm #157346DeJong has struck out 8 times in 18 atbats so far this year.
O’Neill has struck out 9 times in 20 atbats so far this year.I see nothing that has changed with them since last October. Same old swings. Same old two strike approach – swing like a maniac.
With regards to O’Neill, I am thinking he is about like Carlos Martinez and Alex Reyes in that this might be a make or break year for him as well. I dont know how much longer his strikeouts can be tolerated.

April 7, 2021 at 1:22 pm #157347Ugh, Carpenter in the lineup again. And in the middle of the order.
April 7, 2021 at 1:40 pm #157348If NA continues to hit .400 all year we will be fine.
April 7, 2021 at 1:57 pm #157349I liked Carpenter for many years. Now I dread seeing him in the lineup. I don’t like feeling that way.
April 7, 2021 at 1:57 pm #157350I dont know how much longer his strikeouts can be tolerated.
He seems to lack discernment, or a battle’s eye. Hopefully the former, which can be improved. It’s like he is afraid not to swing at something close but off the plate, because he is so nice, he doesn’t want to offend the pitcher.
April 7, 2021 at 2:02 pm #157351A lot of conversation about Carps improved exit velocity, but in reality he has hit .158 with 2020 and Spring Training combined. This is biggest disagreement I’ve had with Schildt’s lineups. Veteran status shouldn’t have Carp hitting 5th. I’d like to see Sosa and Nogowski given chances too.
April 7, 2021 at 2:05 pm #157352Several things I do not like about this lineup. First, why in the world are you running Molina out there in a day-after-night game, when he has not sat yet this year?
Second, Carp again? Third, Edman in right?
Come on. Give Nogowski a go in right. If you have to play Carpenter, put him at first and have Goldy come off the bench in a high leverage spot, thus giving him a break for at least half the game.
April 7, 2021 at 2:06 pm #157353Shildt is getting a little too “Matheny-ish” it seems.
April 7, 2021 at 2:10 pm #157354Carp is our Barrel Master
To play with these fields, you have to be willing to edit the URL in the URL window to change 2020 to 2021.
As you can see from the link, he is leading our team in barrels, % Hard Hit (min 2 BBE), 2nd in sweet spot events (SSE) and 3rd in Barrels Exit Velocity behind Goldy and Nogo.
April 7, 2021 at 2:28 pm #157357I just fear that Carp will find enough plate appearances for a return engagement in 2022. Sosa was playing well at the end of Spring Training, and Nogowski was our best hitter there, and Carp had 2 hits in ST. I would much rather see a lineup with some combo not including Carpenter. Hopefully they recall Thomas change the roster at the 10 game mark.
April 7, 2021 at 2:38 pm #157358Hopefully Carp will have some success hitting to left field. We need Jack to step up like the Ace.
April 7, 2021 at 2:48 pm #157359Carpenter is in the “hope and a prayer” category. My wife and I did both for him yesterday, coincidentally!
In the “hope” category, here’s another fine stat:
Carpenter near the top in xSLG Diff
His xSLG for 2021 is .608, which would make him top ten at the end of the year. Hopefully more will be in the ‘actual’ than ‘expected’ category, as he is currently top 10 in xSLG Diff.
If you really want to get carried away (don’t we all?), I might add that his xOPS is currently over 1.000.

stlcard25ParticipantPositioning is just killing the Cards this year. That double play was set up by the first baseman holding Edman on.
April 7, 2021 at 3:17 pm #157363If we have more xSLG Diffs than them do we win?
April 7, 2021 at 3:23 pm #157364
stlcard25ParticipantIf we have more xSLG Diffs than them do we win?
If the xSLG diff is on the positive side and we are highly ranked in that, then probably we will!
April 7, 2021 at 3:24 pm #157365If we have more xSLG Diffs than them do we win?
Over a long period of time, yes we do.
Several hundreds of years.
April 7, 2021 at 3:25 pm #157366
stlcard25ParticipantJack already in trouble in the first. A pure luck hit and a walk and the Marlins are in business.
April 7, 2021 at 3:36 pm #157368
stlcard25ParticipantJack wiggles out of it with no runs allowed, assisted by the Marlins running themselves into an out at 3rd with no one out. Thanks, Fish!
April 7, 2021 at 4:09 pm #157369
stlcard25ParticipantJack struck out Dickerson on the 2-2, but got squeezed. Another walk. He will have a short outing.
April 7, 2021 at 4:45 pm #157370
stlcard25ParticipantJack is through 5 innings while giving up only one hit. He has given 4 free passes and is over 90 pitches. We will see if he’s going to hit to lead off the 6th.
