Two things were told me by a long time scout one time –
1.) Never get infatuated with a particular prospect.
2.) Don’t ever put too much stock in a player’s Spring Training performance. Either bad or good.RBK was simply saying that Rom wasn’t that effective at AAA or the majors, and 3 innings this Spring is a very small sample. He’s right.

Can you tell us what you mean by Rom not being that impressive, Shady? Are you talking about the major league level or the minor league level? Thank you very much.
My observations and opinions are very subjective, Shady, and I’m sure in many cases can be wrong. I’d much rather go with his 2023 and career stats, along with scouting reports from experts. What do you see in those areas that are beyond just your opinion? Thanks very much.
Shady – Please explain in more detail why you like Rom. You can use last year’s stats, his career minor league stats, and also quotes from various scouting reports. Thank you very much!
Rom was brought up last year because he had more AAA time than most of the others. He got shelled, but maybe he learned something. If he can put together better numbers at Memphis this season than he did at Norfolk last season, he may get another chance at the major league level.
Mo (not Moe) has a stable of young prospect starters, including those who have been coming through the system (McGreevy, Graceffo, Hjerpe, Hence, Hansen, Bedell, Rajcic, Mautz, etc.), and those he picked up last July (Roby, Rom, Robberse, Kloffenstein, amd Showalter). Deep prospect pool now.
Mike – McGreevy must be more of a finesse pitcher. Hope he’s a good one. Less than a K/IP guy at the minor league level sometimes has trouble at the major league level when guys lay off his soft stuff and tee off on his “hard” stuff.
Maybe it’s good to compare the guys who were at AA and AAA last season, by looking at their 2023 and career numbers.

Career – 3.51ERA/1.194WHIP/251.1IP/218H/257K/82WWhat seems to me to stick out are the number of hits given per innings pitched and the number of Ks for the innings pitched. Clearly Mo wanted more guys last July who could miss bats. Control is another story.
But maybe these stats give a little clearer picture of who might stack up a tad better in vying for the rotation in the next several years. And a little more detail for discussion.
ST scores mean very little, especially at this point. But that offense needs to get going pretty soon if they want to ramp up some excitement about the upcoming season.
I really don’t care what their payroll is, or who said what. Just looking forward to a much better 2024.
Making more money for his bosses in the short run may be penny wise pound foolish. Fans are customers and should be treated as such. Alienate them and the attendance will decline as well as the lucrative cable contracts because of declining viewership.
