BDW, Jr. has one top priority every season – to have a winning team. He’s been a fan ever since he was a student at Country Day.
I don’t know what the Cards saw in Fernandez. In 26 games at AAA last season he had an ERA of 6.16. WHIP of 1.565. Ouch.
I’ll join the fan type that just enjoys watching baseball. I’ve been fortunate enough to watch the Cardinals in 10 World Series and win 5 World Championships. At game 7 of the 1982 World Series I was able to walk onto the field after the last out with my 10 year old and scoop a little loose dirt from the pitcher’s mound onto a scorecard. Not sure it gets any better than that.
Now, my main interest is watching the development of the young players, both at the major league and minor league levels. Really looking forward
to seeing how Walker, Gorman, Winn, and Herrera play. And how McReevy, Graceffo, Roby, and Kloffenstein pitch at Memphis.If the Cards go deep into October, that will be great. It it will be the cherry on top of the sundae that has already been enjoyed throughout the season.
The Cards weren’t picked by most pundits to win the WS in either 2006 and 2011. They made the playoffs and things seemed to roll from there. That’s probably the way it’s going to be going forward. They can’t outspend the Yankees, Mets, Braves, Dodgers, etc. So as fans, we’ll probably always be rooting for the underdog.
One thing they can do, however, to try to go deeper into October is the have a clear #1 and #2 starter. Right they we only have a #1.When Kloffenstein came over from

Memphis. He had 9 appearances at Memphis (8 starts). In 39 innings he only gave up 29 hits. Had an ERA of 3.00. If he can develop better control, he might be a better call up than Rom if they need him St. Louis to start a few games.Kittredge, Robertson, Fernandez, and O’Brien. Interesting that Bloom has had prior experience with all of them. The dark horse may be O’Brien.
Had a 2.29 ERA at AAA last season, with 86 Ks in 55 IP.This is truly going to be interesting. First, Lance Lynn could surprise. After he was traded to the Dodgers last season, his ERA dropped by over 2 runs. He’s going to be really motivated coming back “home” to the team he started with and pitching in the same rotation with Gray. Both are genuine bulldogs. They’ll play off each other. And a lot of folks don’t realize how many starts guys like Rom, Libby, Thompson, Woodford, etc. got last year. Only one starter on the entire staff started nore than 21 games for the Cards. One other thing that isn’t publicized is that Gibson had almost as many quality starts as Gray last season.
Now, if Kittredge and Robertson can come through to help Helsley, Gallegos, Romero, et al, we’re going to have a pretty interesting season.
If I had been there, I would have asked Gary what Libby, Thompson, McGreevy, Graceffo, and Roby are working on to hopefully become effective starters at the Major League level, since getting Lynn and Gibson have bought them some time.
Nathan – Paul will have earned just short of $150 million at the end of the 2024 season. I doubt if he and Amy are worried about maximizing his next contract. They’re not that kind of people, anyway.
Brian – With the Cards depending more and more on internal options and taking a look at how effectively they’re developing players to perform at the major league level, I’m surprised they don’t have breakout sessions on those particular topics. And also on all things that go into the draft, like they used to with Kantrovitz and Flores. Are they underestimating the depth of fan knowledge?
The Cardinals are shuffling the deck with Walker, Gorman, Winn, Nootbaar, Donovan, etc. And with trading for Saggese, Roby, etc. from the outside.
I like O’Brien too. But I believe Fernandez, Robertson and even King need to earn their spots. Fernandez and Robertson have no significant MLB experience. King had a decent stint with the Cards, but he was blah before that.
Would like to see Neris or Maton added. Neris, at 34 years old may take a shorter term contract. Maton is 30 and been in the Cards sights for some time. Either would cap it off.
Yes, my thought is that Thompson will be stretched out at Memphis to start the season. The question might be whether one or two of the following might step up – Fernandez, Robertson,
O’Brien, Rom, Kloffenstein, Robberse, or Roby. Maybe even Granillo if he has a great ST.Helsley (hope he stays healthy)
