At Winter Warmup Bakeshow commented that he had worked hard all offseason to lose weight and improve his agility. And what does he get for it?………..
I think there is 0% chance both Carp and Baker are on the roster.
Harsh. Really harsh.
February 17, 2024 at 3:24 pm #242812I know Carp did this and that, but the thing I remember is he signed his fat contract extention prior to the 2019 season and before the ink was dry his production went over a cliff and was gone forever. We all remember having to suffer through 250 or so PAs of.169 BA and bad fielding that final season just because he was making the big bucks.
February 17, 2024 at 4:12 pm #242814My overall take on Matt Carpenter’s career is that he was an above average to good hitter. In the batter’s box I’d characterize him as a sort of Keith Hernandez/Mark Grace Lite. In every other area that applies to the game of baseball I’d have to say he was a significant liability. He brought a borderline oven mitt to any position at which he manned up…He ran the bases as though is cleats were plodding through 18 inches of wet concrete…And he sometimes seemed as though the space between his ears was nothing more than a coconut shell that had been picked clean by a tribe of starving Polynesians…I remember when he had roughly 10 games to get a couple of base hits that would have vaulted him over the 200 hit mark in ’13 and he came up short with 199. It seemed to me at that time as though he were in a mental slump as opposed to a hitting slump. And most of us recall Helton embarrassing him at the 1B bag a couple of seasons later. I liked Matt Carpenter okay, but he wasn’t near a very smart baseball player and anytime he wasn’t standing in the batter’s box there was a decent chance he could hurt your chances.
February 17, 2024 at 7:02 pm #242815I had a chance to see some ST photos on STLToday and a few caught my eye. Ozzie is there for one. I also saw Walker squaring around to bunt during BP. I wonder how often we will see that this season. And lastly Edman taking ground balls wearing in infielders mitt. (As opposed to an outfielders mitt for the dot connecting impaired)
February 17, 2024 at 7:46 pm #242817I’d sac bunt every time in extras and Eddie knows the type of mitt that suits him best.
February 17, 2024 at 7:59 pm #242818My most vivid memory of Matt Carpenter is a good one. My old college roommate and I went to see the Cards out here against the Rockies on a Sunday afternoon.
Ironically as it turned out, Austin Gomber started for us. Carpenter lead off the game with a double, and proceeded to hit three more. When he doubled for the fourth time I told my buddy, “that has to have tied a record.” I doubt anyone has hit five doubles in a big league game.
We scored 6 runs in the top of the first I believe, making it easy for Gomber who went six innings I think. The final score was something like 12-3.
February 17, 2024 at 8:44 pm #242819TD I just thought it was odd seeing our center fielder taking infield practice.
mike I remember seeing Gomber pitch in Peoria. He was a man amongst boys. I thought he would be a dominant force all the way to MLB. I should have know better than to get carried away over an A ball guy. Still, he’s done ok for himself.
February 17, 2024 at 9:33 pm #242821Why would anyone find it odd that Edman is keeping sharp at short also? They need to have contingency plans and right now, based on the roster, Edman is probably the back up SS. Why do you seem surprised by this?
February 18, 2024 at 6:13 am #242822Maybe we can assume that last year’s payroll increase talk was the only smoke and mirrors that has or will ever come out of the FO. In which case trying to read the tea leaves would be a waste. I guess I didn’t think of that.
February 18, 2024 at 7:46 am #242825Good guy to learn from…
Ozzie Smith is mentoring rookie SS Masyn Winn here at #STLCards camp.
“He makes me want to carry that torch,” Winn said, “and perform the best that I can.”

February 18, 2024 at 7:50 am #242826As far as the position player regulars, guys I have not yet seen on any of the tweeted photos are Nootbaar, Goldschmidt and Donovan. Doesn’t mean they aren’t there yet, maybe camera shy or I just missed it. I think report day for them is tomorrow (Monday).
February 18, 2024 at 9:58 am #242830Jeff Jones has some video up from this morning. On the Sonny Gray clip he throws several and on the last one there is a funny looking hitch while his left foot is raised. Any ideas if that is something he does sometimes?
February 18, 2024 at 12:38 pm #242831Not sure about the hitch but from what I have seen and read Gray brings that Chris Carpenter type personality to the mound, which is good. Maybe he can help fill the leadership vacuum.
February 18, 2024 at 2:05 pm #242832I jut recently became aware that Gray was a young teenager and only a freshman in HS when he lost his father as a result of a tragic auto accident. I can’t speak to his personality, but he’s certainly been faced with a tremendous amount of adversity in his lifetime. If he can overcome something like that, I’d have to say tht he can stand up and remain strong when faced with just about anything.

“Word out of #STLCards camp is that the sweeper thrown by newcomer Riley O’Brien on Saturday had 21 inches of horizontal break, per a source. Another key element: He threw it at 84 mph just behind a fastball that was at 98 mph.”I figured we would hear some harping about the large movement O’Brien has on that wiffle ball pitch. It is not news to anyone, nor is it what matters. The issue with him is control, and there was no mention of whether he was around the plate. His brief ML stints were disasters because hitters just didn’t swing, and he has had big problems with that in AAA as well. We will have to see if he has sharpened it up, and hopefully someone will have an eye out for it and tell us.
February 18, 2024 at 5:57 pm #242839Correction of earlier comment. There is video of Nootbaar in camp as of yesterday.
February 18, 2024 at 7:26 pm #242840I saw where Denton reported that Walker is bigger, especially in the arms and shoulders, and checked in at 259.4 lb. That would be up 15 lb from what the Cardinals official site and Baseball Reference has him, which is 245.
Assuming he is in fact bulked up, we will have to see how that plays, at the dish and in the field. I can’t imagine it will help his fielding any.
February 18, 2024 at 7:40 pm #242841Tomorrow being report day, I guess we will either see Donovan (elbow surgery Aug.2) and Carlson (ankle surgery Sept 19) or get an update. Last I knew they were to be ready to go, but I have not seen anything about either one in camp yet..
February 18, 2024 at 7:40 pm #242842Charlie Marlow commented in his report that Walker stayed in Jupiter during the offseason so he could work with the Cardinals’ trainers. One other thing that Marlow said, that I thought was interesting, was that Walker’s dad went to MIT and his mom went to Harvard.
February 18, 2024 at 9:15 pm #242843From Walker as reported by The Cardinal Nation on January 14 in a free article. There is so much already here on the site but missed out on…
Weighed 259.4 pounds just before coming here. Did not plan on it. Result of strength program. Feels stronger, more explosive. No live at-bats yet.
Daily routine this winter with Oquendo in Jupiter: 9:45 a.m. stretch, 30-60 minutes drill on first step, tracking balls, throwing, etc., 45-60 minutes in cage sometimes with Donovan. Then strength and conditioning, lifting, running, home at 2:30.
Grew fast and have to keep up with it. Working on lateral quickness. Will lose water weight during season.
February 18, 2024 at 9:20 pm #242844On Walker’s draft day as reported here at The Cardinal Nation:
“Walker also has solid pedigree as his Mom attended Harvard and his Dad attended MIT. Additionally, his mother played basketball and ran track. Walker is pretty smart himself too, as he committed to play baseball at Duke, causing some scouts to believe that he will be a tough sign.”

I have met Derek and Katrina Walker multiple times, as recently as WWU. They are impressive people.

February 20, 2024 at 1:21 pm #242880“It’s tougher to connect to younger generations. You wanna play ping pong against the guys, and some of the younger guys, sit around on their phones a lot, and it’s a lot of social media. I’d rather sit there and play some card games… Young players can be tough to approach as well. You don’t see things the same way or at the same eye level,” Miles Mikolas said as he backed up the Cardinals’ situation.
February 20, 2024 at 1:26 pm #242881Some folks on social media are suggesting the players are not interested in what the manager is saying. Without being there, it would be really hard to conclude that or anything else.
But, what I did find clear and interesting is the placement of clubhouse stalls. Note Gorman, Walker and Nootbaar all in a row, with Arenado next to Noot on the other side. Also, Winn placed between Carpenter and Carlson.
