Where I made my mistake in life was not getting into a field where a $2M yearly salary is considered a pittance. 🙂

Option A) Lynn and Gibson for 24M (buyouts included)

    Option B) Montgomery for $25m and Thompson,etc at #5.

If they intend to go to the playoffs, I pick B 100 out of 100 times.

Clevinger is still available…. Just saying.

I understand the veteran leadership need to an extent, but not this extent. Lynn, Gibson, Crawford and Carp don’t make up for the on the field production lost.

I really don’t care what their payroll is, or who said what. Just looking forward to a much better 2024.

The only problem with your scenario is timing. Boras would never let Montogmoery sign in November and the Cardinals certainly did not want to wait until March to get their rotation set. That would have been very risky and they may have ended up with none of the above.

Cardinals current 40 man payroll is 177.8, which ranks 10th in MLB.

However there are still some free agents remaining (Snell, Chapman, Monty, JD Martinez, etc..) and if the Angels, Red Sox, and Giants sign those players the Cardinals could drop to 14th.

Bling, who starts game 2 of a playoff series? Mikolas vs Wheeler? Don’t like the Cards chances in that one….

Gray / Montgomery looks pretty good – on paper – as your 1 and 2 starters.

    A) endorse the rebuild. Deadline is 6mos away and Mo has a recent Monty/Q deadline history. I’m more concerned with the pen and bench ruining buyer status.
    If buyers, reassess the pitching.

I know it would cost a boat load in prospects/young controllable guys but Kirby or Woo would be great additions. Not sure they could get either without Gorman, Winn or Walker though.

Man, the Mets have really spent un-wisely. Some clubs are getting a lot of bang for their buck – Braves, D-Backs, Mariners, Twins, Rays and Orioles. The Pirates and Reds might be good this year too, we will see.

The Dodgers spend, but they win so you can’t say too much bad about them.

The Braves are owned by Liberty Media. I spent 15 years of my career, mostly in middle management in accounting/finance for a company owned by Liberty. They are a very well-run and employee-centric organization. They had the usual corporate BS in some ways, but were far better than most that I experienced in that they really made an effort to allow their employees at all levels to succeed career-wise and financially. The corporate norm is more that the exec’s are wildly compensated, and everyone else is treated as replaceable. Liberty was better than that as far as “the little people.” It does not surprise me that the Braves are a well-run group.

Very true Mike. The Mets have been incredibly wasteful. Perhaps they will get smarter now that they finally plucked Stearns from Milwaukee to be thier PBO.

I agree about the Braves being a well run organization. One ofthe amazing things they have done is lock up their best youung talent to long term and extremely team friendly deals. This eventually frees up more payroll to high end aqcuisitions from the outside.

This is entirely hinged on Forbes’ revenue estimates since the real values are not reported. They are the best we have, but I am not comfortable with the decimal point precision being represented here.

    Still, interesting…

According to that the Cardinals are 13th in revenue and 13th in payroll (CBT payroll). That sounds about right.

I think many fans get frustrated because the Cards never seem willing to undergo even a slight bump in payroll for a needed talent acquisition. Or perhaps it’s the sense that they’ve been letting payroll stagnate at the expense of the product on the field and to the benefit of Dewitt’s wallet. Without seeing all the numbers from the past 10+ years, I can’t say that it’s true.

It is apparent that they have a relatively fair amount of revenue going to payroll as compared to other MLB teams. It’s also probably apparent that they are pretty average at it when you take out the teams that are clearly rebuilding or are tiny market and notorious for being cheap (which is almost all of the last 10 on the list).
