People don’t “bash” on here, “Shady”. They express opinions and support those opinions with facts.

I hope you are correct. And it’s quite refreshing. But why not just “gut” opinions, sometime? Just for discussion. For instance, some had opinions of Burleson’s potential that weren’t necessarily supported by actual facts. Others had facts that discredited him. So who’s looking more accurate now?

As I asked on another thread and will keep emphasizing until it stops is this:

None of us care about arguments between posters (or anything else for that matter) that occurred on other boards. Leave the dirty laundry there. Stop bringing up those prior disagreements here. Nothing good will come of it.

Brian, I really appreciate those boundaries. I really do. Point taken. Just curious, have there never been any Burleson bashers here? What were your thoughts on Burleson’s potential last season compared to now?

I wouldn’t say bashers, but there are surely those who were more bullish and others less bullish about him. Not really different than any other player.

At this point, the MLB jury is still out on Burly, so it seems premature for anyone to celebrate one way or the other. Most fans want every player to succeed but of course that doesn’t always happen.

As bccran noted, on this forum, people who back their views with facts or stats or something of substance fare a lot better in the discussions than those who just cite their opinion (“because I said so”).

It doesn’t mean there is always agreement. In fact, that is rarely the case, but at least folks generally respect each others’ positions when there is something behind it.

Regarding my view of Burly, I posted it on one of the other threads started about him.

Basically, I said that I think he has a golden opportunity to perform while Nootbaar and Edman are out. He can earn more time afterward if he hits well. If not, the roster numbers are such that he might end up back in Memphis for a while.

What will actually happen is anyone’s guess.

In regards to the title of this thread, in order for Burleson to one day be what could be termed a fine hitter, he’s going to have to generate more offensive production in the form of pushing baserunners across HP. In 400 career PA’s he’s collected 39 RBI’s. That’s not good enough for a guy who’s either a marginally serviceable OF’er or a 1B’man. He should get plenty of looks the first 40 to 50 games and in my view he’s going to have to hit with runners aboard when he gets his chance.

I agree with the RBI production. Burly also needs to connect for more home runs. I feel he can.

He can earn more time afterward if he hits well.

I think it also depends upon how much of a liability he is in the field day in, day out for however long this opportunity lasts. So it is not just about “if he hits well”. He could easily field himself out of consideration for any sort of regular role other than occasional off the bench work.

This is a very nice forum I really enjoy the differing opinions on the young players potential,I really believe the cards have quite a few good young players but moe has really messed up the pitching

Mo (not Moe) has a stable of young prospect starters, including those who have been coming through the system (McGreevy, Graceffo, Hjerpe, Hence, Hansen, Bedell, Rajcic, Mautz, etc.), and those he picked up last July (Roby, Rom, Robberse, Kloffenstein, amd Showalter). Deep prospect pool now.

my pick of the young pitchers are McGreevy and Thompson, the rest of them are lottery tickets at best

I would caution against getting too overhyped about spring training stats. While they can sometimes be predictive, many times they are not because there are different variables in play then in the regular season. Those variables include shorter outings for the pitchers, hitters and pitchers who are experimenting, completely different level of talent than seen in the regular season, much more suitable weather, different level of pressure, etc…

While these games can be meaningful for guys desperate to earn a roster spot most of these stats will be long forgotten once the bell rings on opening day.

My pick for young pitchers is ‘all of the above’. Hjerpe, Hence, Bedell, and Rajcic are my current favorites. Blake has some interesting thoughts about Rajcic in today’s ‘Wednesdays with B and B’.

If Edman and Nootbaar aren’t ready to play opening day, how should the Cardinals utilize Burleson? It might depend if they decide to go with Scott in CF. I really like Burleson as the DH versus RHP.

A DH with an 83 OPS+? What’s not to like?

Currently, Burleson has some nice numbers going in spring training. .400 BA and an OPS at 1.038.

Yes, in 34 PAs. It’s the equivalent of about 7 full games (in spring training, no less).

Mentioned it on another thread, but I learned back in 2013 to not to get too excited about spring training stats.

    Shane Robinson .438/.493/.719/1.212 in 64 at-bats
    4-for-4 in steals, 9 doubles, 3 HR, 14 RBI, 7 BB/7 K

Yes, spring training is like a SSS BABIP extravaganza.

Two things were told me by a long time scout one time –

1.) Never get infatuated with a particular prospect.
2.) Don’t ever put too much stock in a player’s Spring Training performance. Either bad or good.
