Did you happen to see Rom’s last performance? He was simply brilliant. Hopefully, an indication of really good things to come. The Cards could use a surprise out of all their young starting pitching. Also, I believe you use to bash Burleson quite a bit. Any changes in your thinking on him from what he’s done so far in spring training. If I have the wrong poster in mind, please comment on Burleson’s spring training just the same.

I commented that Tudor and Rom had nothing in common. And to even try to make the comparison when Rom faced AA and A hitters late in the game, is really silly, if you want me to be honest. There was nothing “Tudor-esque” about it.
Tudor is in the Cardinal HOF so it would be difficult to compare a AAAA player to him. Hopefully Rom will continue to develop though. I do think he has some potential. He was thrown to the wolves last year so maybe 2024 will be more stable for him.
Wrong again, Rom faced some fine MLB hitters in that masterful outing. Like it or not, it’s simply hard to deny how good he was in his last appearance. Will he continue like this? I doubt it, but it was a lot better than some of the other more highly touted pitchers have performed.
I don’t know about Rom, but there’s a house down the street from us that features oak timbers prominently displayed on the exterior portion of the structure…I’d say that the house is somewhat, “Tudor-esque”…I happen to think it’s a nice looking house.
Anybody that wasn’t impressed with Rom’s last performance is either in denial or simply “out to lunch”. I don’t know if he can continue to pitch like that. But give the guy his due for that last showing. And yes, he did pitch like Tudor in that game. He wasn’t overpowering, but he had fabulous command and seemed to have hitters confused.
I just looked Rom up, and I remember him now. Poor guy was touched up for enough taters to fill an Ore Ida truck along with 30 ER’s in a little shy of 34 IP. Jerry Quarry would wince at those numbers…
No, I missed it, but it sounds like he really wants to impress the Redbird manager as the type of pitcher that should be a member of this outstanding rotation. Heck, he was afforeded 8 GS last season. Obviously the whiz-kid Redbird manager forsees great things from the young lefty.
The answer to the question posed is no, it is not real. Doing it once is not real. Doing it regularly is real. Rom will likely get a couple more outings this spring, so he has a chance to make it real. We will have to wait and see if he does.
Was Herrera catching Rom in his recent outstanding pitching performance? Whomever the catcher was, he did a crafty job setting up hitters.
Kudos to Rom for having one good outing in a meaningless game. I am glad he looked good in that one meaningless game and I hope he someday looks just as good in meaningful games.
Like I said previously I think Rom has some potential but I am not going to get overhyped by one grapefruit league performance.
He has looked good in a “meaningful” game. He pitched a gem against his former organization in an MLB regular season game last season. Wish he’d had more performances like that. He’s still fairly young.
Yep he did look good in one big league game last year. If he has about 100 more of those maybe he will join Tudor in the Cardinal HOF.
I agree, there’s a big difference between occasionally pitching like Tudor and the way Tudor consistently pitched for the Cardinals. We can only hope that Rom is “the real deal”.
Rom was brought up last year because he had more AAA time than most of the others. He got shelled, but maybe he learned something. If he can put together better numbers at Memphis this season than he did at Norfolk last season, he may get another chance at the major league level.
if only there was a way shady and “wally” could have looked up who was catching whatever game he (because they are the same person) is blabbing on and on about….maybe the red sox scout “friend” can tell them?
How did this post qualify as a contribution to Cardinals baseball talk? Discuss the topic, not other posters. Such as, were you encouraged by Rom’s last pitching performance and whomever did an excellent job calling his pitches?
Shady – Please explain in more detail why you like Rom. You can use last year’s stats, his career minor league stats, and also quotes from various scouting reports. Thank you very much!
Just eyeballing probably the finest outing of any Cardinals pitcher in spring training. At least, that I’ve seen. Who have you seen that was more outstanding than Rom was in his last appearance? I know, a small sample size. But, for me, it was totally unexpected.
