Rom hasn’t been that impressive, overall. That’s why his recent performance was kind of surprising. By the way, I see savvy in Rom that I like as a competitor. Kind of like the savvy I sense Burleson has.

ParticipantCan you tell us what you mean by Rom not being that impressive, Shady? Are you talking about the major league level or the minor league level? Thank you very much.
March 13, 2024 at 7:45 pm #243955Nothing about his past stats are overly impressive. MLB or minors. But in his last performance, he was better than anything I’ve seen in Flaherty in the last few years. And that’s who Rom was traded for.

ParticipantBut in his last performance, he was better than anything I’ve seen in Flaherty in the last few years.
Flaherty today: 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5K
It’s just one game (in spring training, no less), don’t scout the box score.
March 13, 2024 at 8:41 pm #243959Great for Flaherty today. But he sure wasn’t exceptional in his last couple seasons with the Cards.

Neither was Rom for the Cardinals or Orioles, yet here we are in your thread about him based on a single 3-inning spring training start.
March 13, 2024 at 8:53 pm #243961Yes, it was outstanding. Totally unexpected. Rom looked like Tudor in his last outing. Like one of his starts last season against the Orioles. Would you rather he got “lit up”? If you have something better to do than read my posts. Do it!

ParticipantShady – as Brian said, this is not a confrontational forum. It’s a forum of mutual respect among posters who are courteous with each other.
March 13, 2024 at 9:39 pm #243964What? What I said was “confrontational”?Please explain. Actually, the post I was referring to was just as “confrontational”.
March 13, 2024 at 9:41 pm #243965bccran
ParticipantIt’s self explanatory, Shady.
March 13, 2024 at 9:46 pm #243966Let’s not get too sensitive here. OK ? Please, let it go. It’s no biggie. Let’s see some spring training talk. I tried to be courteous in answering you today.

ParticipantRBK was simply saying that Rom wasn’t that effective at AAA or the majors, and 3 innings this Spring is a very small sample. He’s right.
March 14, 2024 at 7:11 am #243969moe must think rom has potential he traded for him

ParticipantSorry, Wally, his nickname is “Mo”.
Thanks very much for your future spelling correction.March 14, 2024 at 10:13 am #243992I look for hints that a prospect/younger player could really help the Cardinals. I do sometimes rush my hopes. Sorry if I came on confrontational. I don’t want anymore of that, if possible. Especially, with respectful posters. If some of the antagonists try to mess with other posters here. It seems Brian will usually try to keep them in line.

ParticipantRom has 532 strike outs in 450 2/3 innings in his minor league career. But he’s also given up 162 walks in those 450 2/3 innings. So with a career ERA of 3.71 he ends up with a WHIP of 1.314. Last season at Norfolk, he gave up 46 walks in 86 innings pitched. Ouch. He’s got some talent but needs better control. If he gains that, he could be a decent asset.
March 14, 2024 at 5:43 pm #244047Good points. In his last outing, the encouraging aspects were his control. And all the “swing and misses”. Hope he builds on it. Some pitchers improve with experience. Let’s hope that applies to Rom.

ParticipantShady – what’s the top speed on his 4 seam fastball? What’s its rating?
And what are the ratings on his other pitches? That will give us a much clearer picture. Thanks very much.March 14, 2024 at 7:41 pm #244059Sorry, Wally, his nickname is “Mo”.
Thanks very much for your future spelling correction.Hi cranny,
Hope you’re enjoying spring training.
As one of our long-time posters, you are aware this isn’t a Spelling Bee. It was clear to whom the OP was referring, no correction needed.
Tks.
March 14, 2024 at 7:48 pm #244060Rom doesn’t throw real hard. What I know is Rom was remarkably effective in his last outing. Somehow, some way.
March 14, 2024 at 8:21 pm #244065rom did look good

ParticipantSorry, UConn. Just don’t care for the obvious reference to one of the 3 stooges when Mo’s name is purposely spelled “Moe”. It’s a needless putdown. He’s had a long and distinguished career with the Cardinals organization and been deeply involved in many of the successes.
March 15, 2024 at 5:06 am #244081Moe is a terrible POBO

I understand your point but will point out a couple of things:
1) John Mozeliak is going to do what he deems best for the organization. The only opinions of him likely to concern him are by those personnel with authority to fire him. That’s not likely to be anyone posting on this board. Hence, I doubt Mo loses any sleep re our sport board posts. If he doesn’t mind I think everyone on this board can refrain from reacting negatively on his behalf. Which leads to my next point –2) As I told my kids when they were growing up (ad nauseum, if you ask them) “You can never control how others act, you can only control how you react“. Let the Moderators provide the guidance on acceptable posting.
Thanks
March 15, 2024 at 10:39 am #244093It doesn’t seem to have been a misspelling.
