Those are some empty seats. Although it is especially hot so I wouldn’t want to be out in the sun all day for a day game either.
June 22, 2024 at 3:37 pm in reply to: StL 2024 Game #77 thread – Saturday, June 22 vs. Giants #257412Contreras is supposed to be back in a couple of days right? Raposo being in the roster should be too big of a deal for a few days then.
June 22, 2024 at 3:30 pm in reply to: StL 2024 Game #77 thread – Saturday, June 22 vs. Giants #257409That is the 2nd time I recall Winn getting thrown out at 2nd trying to take an extra base on a throw home that is cut off. He needs to remember a cut off will gun him down.
June 22, 2024 at 3:28 pm in reply to: StL 2024 Game #77 thread – Saturday, June 22 vs. Giants #257406Just tuned in, but it is great to see Burly tapping into some power. Good to see Donovan and Goldy with HRs. Winn with a good game as well.

While I think Winn has great promise with the glove, he has had a lot of mental lapses. Anyone watching the games will also tell you Siani has been the best defender on the team. Donovan’s OF reads appear to be getting much better as he gets more time out there and he has made some really good plays.
June 22, 2024 at 10:14 am in reply to: StL 2024 Game #77 thread – Saturday, June 22 vs. Giants #257351We get to see our old friend Hicks today. He is 11th in MLB on the ERA leaderboards. Flaherty is at #15 and Gray is #17. Hicks looks to have been the beneficiary of some luck as his FIP is #36. Gray actually looks to have bad some and luck according to FIP as his FIP is 2.58 which is 4th best. Flaherty is #9 on FIP.
In general, the teams that converted high octane RP to SP have had great success. Reynaldo Lopez leads MLB in ERA and is #10 in FIP. We mentioned Hicks already. And Garrett Crochet has an ERA of 3.25 which has steadily been decreasing down toward his 5th best FIP in baseball.
You draft the best player available and do not draft for need. Kurtz and Caglianone don’t help with the 1B hole at all as they themselves are 2+ years away if they even make it. Smart GMs draft up the middle players as they are the best athletes and can shift down the defensive spectrum if they aren’t defensively cut out for SS or CF. Up the middle players also can provide value even if their bat doesn’t turn out great as they can play a hard defensive position.
If a 1B can’t field, he can only go to DH, and then his hitting is even more important. If a 1B or DH can’t hit, he is completely worthless.
Tier 1 is Condon and Bazzana. They are the best 2 players in the draft. Some teams may have Burns in there as well, but I know there is some concern about the lack of a 3rd pitch and his mechanics consistency. I expect both Caglianone and Kurtz to go lower than draft experts think. Both are limited to 1B and the history of unathletic 1B in the draft is not good.
No catchers will be sent out I assume. Herrera has been above average offensively and we need all the offense we can get. He can DH and provide pinch hitting duties. Pages’s glove is looking very good and I think the team prefers him as the primary backup. I’m guessing Fermin gets sent down when Contreras is back.
Yeah Brian is right we have room for Kloffenstein now. When Matz comes off the IL and potentially Pallante gets sent down, we will see what happens. Same thing with Robberse getting healthy. We would have 7 potential SP as of now for 5 spots in AAA.
The situation will likely be sorted out through trades I imagine. Either we are in it and trade a AAA pitcher, or we are out and trade an MLB SP and need someone from AAA to come up. Hence is also interesting to consider. Before the injury, I was expecting him to be in AAA by July. The injury may push that back to August.
AA is also going to have some sorting out to do unless someone is traded soon. Mathews is probably looking to be promoted to AA soon. Paniagua should be promoted as he is 24 and pitching decently well. He also needs to move up to test if he is worthy of a 40 man spot. I wonder how much longer Trent Baker has as a SP in Springfield. He has pitched very poorly and has a very violent delivery, so he should be moved to the BP soon in my opinion.

June 20, 2024 at 9:23 pm in reply to: StL 2024 Game #76 thread – Thursday, June 20 vs. Giants at Birmingham #257221An OF of Scott, Siani, Carlson. That is some good defense patrolling the green
June 20, 2024 at 8:48 pm in reply to: StL 2024 Game #76 thread – Thursday, June 20 vs. Giants at Birmingham #257198It feels like our pitchers waste our good offensive games. We can never win comfortably and always let them close in.
June 20, 2024 at 8:33 pm in reply to: StL 2024 Game #76 thread – Thursday, June 20 vs. Giants at Birmingham #257181Yeah he is. I thought for sure that ball was going to get by him for multiple bases.
June 20, 2024 at 8:22 pm in reply to: StL 2024 Game #76 thread – Thursday, June 20 vs. Giants at Birmingham #257172Hence is at the game and is doing good health wise it sounds like. I’m also glad to hear Chase Davis is at the game today as I saw him not in the lineup 2 straight days and was worried he was hurt. That is nice to see MLB to let some of the minors kids come to the game today.
June 20, 2024 at 8:14 pm in reply to: StL 2024 Game #76 thread – Thursday, June 20 vs. Giants at Birmingham #257164Really good game by Donovan so far
No Nootbaar in your top 4 Cards hitters? On a per PA basis he is 3rd best on the team behind Contreras and Winn.
Springfield had a 7 inning no hitter with Hjerpe throwing 5 really good innings. 6 Ks and 1 BB
June 20, 2024 at 6:14 pm in reply to: StL 2024 Game #76 thread – Thursday, June 20 vs. Giants at Birmingham #257106For anyone who doesn’t have local TV to watch, Stanford University has been running an experiment to test streaming quality where they live stream the Bay area channels over the web. Useful if you want different NFL games in the winter.
Just search Puffer Stanford and you should be able to find it and then pick the Fox broadcast.
June 20, 2024 at 9:41 am in reply to: StL 2024 Game #76 thread – Thursday, June 20 vs. Giants at Birmingham #257066Any word on who is going down for Kloffenstein if Scott is the 27th man? Or is Gibson going to the IL?
June 19, 2024 at 8:49 pm in reply to: StL 2024 Game #76 thread – Thursday, June 20 vs. Giants at Birmingham #257047You had to win a lottery to get tickets. Even if you wanted to go, you would have a hard time finding an available ticket.
June 19, 2024 at 8:48 pm in reply to: StL 2024 Game #75 thread – Wednesday, June 19 at Marlins #257046I would like to see Donovan in the #2 spot while Not is out. Burly is not an OBP type of guy with his very low walk rates. Donny has been warming up and has a history of posting good OBPs.
I’m guessing they will have him be the long reliever behind Pallante tomorrow.
Great stuff this week Brian and Blake. I am really liking Rainer the more I read and hear about him. Plus bat speed and power potential at SS is hard to pass up for someone like Kurtz who will be stuck at 1B. Wetherholt and Rainer are probably my two favorite players with a chance to make it to us.
That is interesting info Brian. I didn’t know they asked him to take less pitches. That may explain him struggling so much if he was forcing swings at pitches and taking uncomfortable ABs.
