Gyorko has always run hot and cold. He’s bad now but could hit .300 with 15 homers in the second half.
Hendricks throws absolute junk. There’s no reason he should ever strike anyone out. Not to mention, he isn’t exactly pitching in the zone tonight.
There’s a decent argument that Martinez might be the 5th best hitter in tonight’s lineup. Glad he came through.
Yeah, he has turned it around bigtime. We need a couple more guys to hi to potential and there really might be something going.
The thing about the Orioles is that they’re dumb enough to blow the whole thing by insisting on a team’s best pitching prospect, even though the Cards have probably 5 or 6 (maybe more) better than any the Cubs have. So they’ll hold out for a Flaherty and end up with a delicious sandwich pick in return.
Marp and Ozuna are both about to pass Pham in OPS. They’ve both done relatively well but Pham’s decline is a big part of why the offense has stalled out lately. He probably needs moved down to 5-6 in the order until he straightens out.
It looked like it mat have been possible, but Baez was pretty far off the line and I’m not sure if Yadi is quite that nimble. Haha
Wacha is great against everyone but Chicago.
Also, I really dislike Lester. I wish just once we smoked him for 8 runs.

Yep, and my point was that those high draft picks were turned into the guys they traded for. The cheap young talent let them spend in free agency in ways they couldn’t have without the gutted roster move.
Tanking doesn’t just affect the draft…it plays into trades, free agency, etc. It is the #1 reason the Cubs are where they are right now.
So you guys are ruling out 3B and 1B as places to put a better bat? If so, that limits our choices. If getting a bat is that important then yes someone is going to have to sit.
I don’t rule it out but I’d also say that 1B and 3B are hard places to upgrade, offensively, with this roster. If you include defense Moustakas is an upgrade if you can move Carpenter to 1B but the offense isn’t gaining much then.
Machado would be a real upgrade and I’d be in favor of giving up anything outside of Reyes, Flaherty and Hicks to make it happen. Trade Gyorko and Wong and/or Martinez. A shakeup is needed.
The Heyward signing was a massive bust. I don’t care if they won the Series but that was a terrible contract.
While they have made some shrewd moves, the #1 factor in the Cubs accumulation of talent has been their tank job. Yeah, trades…yeah, free agents…but they don’t pull it off without getting payroll and roster talent that they used to get high draft picks that turned into cheap, high end talent.
It stinks, as a Cards fan…and maybe it’s a little bit of bitterness speaking…but it’s a fact.
If Wong gets traded (and he probably should be since he’ll never get a chance at every day play again and without it he will keep hitting poorly), I could see Schrock added.
Ditto Mercado if we drop an OF.
Wisdom is fairly meh to me. Maybe the positional flexibility makes him a better choice than Voit I suppose.
O’Neill will be up again and in the mix next year. Nothing wrong with working on the approach in Memphis for a while.
Maybe it’s a blip, but the metrics like Marp at 3B this year so far. He’s at +6 DRS and 6.4 UZR/150. Perhaps the Cards are pressing their luck and he’ll turn back into a poor defender there, but I personally don’t see Beltre as an upgrade over the Carpenter/Gyorko combo.
Gotta say that this offense still needs that consistent guy to drive in runs. Maybe Pham picks it back up. Maybe Dejong is it. But when I looked at last night’s lineup, I saw Molina-Gyorko-Munoz-Wong-Pitcher from 5-9. That just doesn’t scare anyone and rightly is being shut down by pitchers who must be licking their chops to see that poor offense. If two or three of that first four aren’t battering the ball, the offense just cannot score runs. Beltre won’t help that. For me it’s time to trade that depth or go home. At least get a plus bat for your troubles.
I agree with you, at present. With the benefit of time, I think we will see some of the guys start to separate themselves out a bit more. Weaver has the most precarious position, and we could be looking at Wacha leaving after 2019. So, some of those guys may be needed in the event of injuries or departures. Like I said, it is a nice problem to have. The one slight negative is that there really is no standout left-hander in the group.
Hudson’s strikeouts are coming up a little this year. He’s still walking guys a bit more than you’d like but maybe he’s got a Miles Mikolas type surge in his future. Still, he’s probably earned his shot to come up this year to the bullpen if nothing else, and to compete for a rotation spot next year. Unless some trades happen, there is no shortage of viable candidates for the last couple rotation slots…Reyes, Flaherty, Weaver, Hudson, Gant, Helsley, Gomber, Poncedeleon…good issue to have. Would be a better issue if the guys who don’t make it help fill out a front line bullpen.
Not a good look, although the Padres have been playing a lot better lately. Maybe they need to play tough teams to win series. Going to need a comeback in the ninth to avoid the series loss.

I agree, bikemike. I think Weaver will be fine in the long run but like Wacha, may have some growing pains getting there. The nice thing is that the Cards have a lot of starting pitching depth to back him up if needed.
I will also add that they showed a graphic during one of his recent starts and he had the most strikeouts in his first 150 IP of any Cardinals starter ever. So…he has something to work off.
It’s simply not going to happen right now. Right or wrong (I happen to think right), you don’t throw away guys you signed less than two years ago for 1/3 of a bad season. Thankfully, GMs don’t think like we do because they wouldn’t run a successful team if they did.
Also, Fowler will be better against righties than any of the young, cheap, talented crowd. He knows he’s not likely to play out the string with the Cards but let’s stop pretending that he’s suddenly a legitimately below replacement player all of a sudden that brings nothing to the table.
