The silly rumor season is officially in place.
Some guy at Bleacher Report writes an article making up a bunch of trade ideas he likes. “Eye Opening MLB Trade Ideas Wild Enough to Work”.
His fifth idea is Wacha for Machado.
Fair enough. No harm done. He made it clear they are his ideas.
Of course, those who have nothing more to add than to write about what others write and twist it, represented it this way, “Manny Machado to the Cardinals for Michael Wacha is a Possibility”.
C’mon. It is only a possibility in the dreams of some guy at Bleacher Report. The author of the second article did not even list his name. I wonder why. Click-bait city.
This is exactly how stupid rumor stuff starts every summer and off-season. People read the headline and the bogus talk takes off.
This really makes me mad, but of course, I have integrity. Now, anyone with a keyboard can start a rumor.
Knowing where to go or who to read for potential trade/FA information is important. As you suggest some writers are click bait, some have agendas trying to promote certain teams, players, agents, etc… but some writers have solid legitimate information that is worth a deeper look.
Of course in order for someone to enjoy the trade/FA season a person has to actually enjoy trades and free agents. Brian, I’ve always got the impression you don’t enjoy either. You seem to be more of a build from within only type of guy.
Did I hear that a prominent mlb reporter said there was a Machado deal in place last winter, but the Cards backed out. Any validity to this? And were there any Cardinal names included?
I have not heard the Cardinals had a deal in place, but Baltimore is said to be high on Jack Flaherty
A recent injury of note is Adbert Alzolay of the Cubs. He is their top pitching prospect and is out for the rest of the year with a lat injury (sound familiar). Speculation was that the Orioles wanted him and Russell for Machado. Whether that is true or not Alzolay was going to be a big trade chip that the Cubs will not have available to them.
The thing about the Orioles is that they’re dumb enough to blow the whole thing by insisting on a team’s best pitching prospect, even though the Cards have probably 5 or 6 (maybe more) better than any the Cubs have. So they’ll hold out for a Flaherty and end up with a delicious sandwich pick in return.

The Orioles are so poorly ran. I anticipate them holding on Machado for the full season. This is the same org that’s paying Chris Davis for 4 more years.
Every time I see the name Chris Davis, I am reminded of one of nate’s “greatest” prior armchair GM moves. At the time, he ripped the Cards up and down for not signing Davis instead. Seven years, $161 million was not quite Pujols-bad, but still a huge, huge mistake.
I love how Nate made it sound like he really didn’t think Davis was very good after the deal started looking bad.
Some of our more recent Cardinal Nation additions may be wondering just who is this Nathan fellow that people speak of???? I guess if I had just one word to describe Nate it might be “colorful”. The man could at times be quite controversial. He was also extremely intelligent, as his verifiable 192 IQ could attest to. Nate…..wherever you are…..hopefully you have not gone to that big diamond in the sky….please come back home to roost…right here where you are loved!…well “loved” may be too strong a word….but certainly he was very very well liked.
Nate is still around now and then, but on the new site has a new handle, mspaid. If the Cards are swept tonight, I predict he will be back tomorrow with a short post very much like this:
“Don’t waste your time getting excited about trades. The front office will never do what they need to do to win. If they add anyone, it will be a worthless slug.”
The build from within only crowd has certainly gotten a lot of mileage out of Chris Davis. Yes, we get it. It was a bad deal. But yet we never hear about the successful players we passed on or missed on. Please no more lectures about people having agendas.
I’m sorry gscott but we hear all the time about missing on Price and Heyward and Scherzer and Robert and Pujols and even Kang both Gurriels Lazardo Stanton (not exactly a FA) I’m sure I’m forgetting more
“Success” is always relative and some has yet to be totally seen. Even with Heyward and Price
gscottar, if you consider that a lecture, then you may have to read it again and again. As far as agendas, I don’t have one, but nate clearly does. At times, I give him credit for at least being consistent. In the specific case of Davis, it looked highly questionable from the start, unlike Heyward or Price, for example.
Anyone with a realistic view knows that a good team cannot be developed in one manner only. But it appears the Cards may have swung too hard against external additions. As far as the current team goes, it is clear to me that they could not develop enough offense and did not acquire enough externally, either.
In my view, the rotation is playoff caliber. The bullpen has the potential to be. The offense and defense have to improve to be any more than a wild card threat, and that means going forward too.
If Machado gives you greater playoff odds this year and a better chance to sign him long term, then you go for the trade. If not, I guess the absolute need is to try to consolidate some of the “good” talent into elite talent. That’s easier said than done, perhaps.
I would still love the look of a Dejong-Machado left side of the IF with either Gyorko or Wong at 2B and Carp and Jmart rotating at 1B. Better offense, better defense and if the bullpen gets going that’s a good team.
Whoa! Better sit down with a cup of coffee, agee, and seriously re-think the idea of trading over five years of control of Martinez for three months of Machado.
Every time that there’s a big name FA or trade possibility we get a lot of comments about acquiring said players. Rarely do any of the ideas pan out.
Let’s just say we trade for Machado using an All-Star starting pitcher (Wacha and one or two solid prospects (what Baltimore really needs). The move made with the idea of making the playoffs. Now let’s say we still don’t make the wild card. Even if we somehow do slither into a one game playoff and lose, we wind up with a whole lot of nothing… and we lost some very good pieces going forward.
Would Girsch get the pink slip, OR is Matheny the fall guy for missing or failing in the the playoffs. I doubt very much that Girsch will put his neck on the line with very little to gain. Even the great Machado doesn’t make this team a World Series contender. The teams with the most chance of getting MM are the ones close enough to being a WS possibility.
Good points, Ny. I will offer my stream of consciousness reaction. Of course, anyone is also welcome to do the same.
BDW Jr. would have to sign off on any trade. My guess is that he would have to be convinced by Mo and Girsch to make such a deal, guys who are more about building from within. Being a players’ manager, my guess is that Matheny would rather try to win with the guys he has than to lose a Wacha.
So in my story line, if this trade somehow occurred and the team still misses the post-season, the hit would be on Mo and Girsch. But, the former still has control and has built up a lot of good will. What would firing Girsch really accomplish? Things would continue as always.
I think when all is said and done (trade or no trade) that Matheny remains on the hot seat because he is closest to being accountable for wins and losses. And if the team wins in the upper 80s but falls just short, the improvement over 2017 may be enough for him to hold his job.
As far as Machado goes, I agree with you. His best fit is with a front-runner that wants to try to go over the top and is willing to take the hit on a rental.
