You’d think the Cards have never seen a curveball before. Pivetta was on fire tonight, but he threw a lot of curves the last few innings. Eventually they should have been able to hit some; especially the ones in the middle of the zone.
Like what? We talking top 100 type prospect? High end top 20 guy?
IMO if you can’t get a top 20ish player it’s not worth it. We need star material and not more back end top 100 guys who all have holes.
What is the proportion of pitchers that pitch their best game of the season against the Cards? It sure seems like this happens about once a week.
Matheny really wants Dexter to have some success. I would have really preferred Garcia.

I don’t worship Pham at all. I’m simply saying that he’s the most talented player in the Cardinals system right now. Bader isn’t in the same league. He’s a good defender who needs to be hidden against right handed pitching because he can’t hit it well enough right now. I like the OF in the system and you’re right that it’s a position of strength. I’d be more interested on seeing if someone wants Bader because I think Mercado can do what he does almost as well.
What do you think Tommy Pham would be worth in a trade? Just so we’re on the same page regarding his candidacy.
Per ESPN, the return was outfielder Blake Perkins, third baseman Kelvin Gutierrez, and righthanded pitcher Yohanse Morel. Perkins and Gutierrez are the #11/10 guys on MLB pipeline, and 12/17 for Sickels. Morel I didn’t find ranked anywhere.
Miles has settled down a bit. It would be nice if he got through 6 innings and the Cards figured out Pivetta a bit.
Down three runs against a worn out Phillies staff? I wouldn’t say the Cards are favored but they could come back, sure.

There is no one in the system who can reach the peak that Tommy was at literally 5-6 weeks ago, period. One bad month isn’t going to convince anyone otherwise.
I suppose I might agree that he could be a sell high candidate, but I would hope you aren’t in sales because you haven’t given a very glowing review of your trade piece, lol.
Now that’s just not true. Pham put up around 8 WAR in a full season of play from his callup last year to early May of this. No one in the Cardinal system can put that up, or likely even half of that value. I also suspect he’ll be much better the rest of this season.
The Cards go quietly in the first. Hopefully they can wear Pavetta down and get to the soft Phillies bullpen early tonight.
One of those two is good news for the team, unless Holland has gained such pinpoint accuracy as to purposely walk guys and give up hits and homers to lull MLB teams into a false sense of security on his comeback.
Looking forward to seeing Jose back tonight and maybe Holland soon if the Cards are up by 7 runs.
The Cards have the ERA advantage in every game this series. However, this is the only one with a vast difference.
To go on the road and win a series against a team we will need to compete against for a playoff spot would be huge. Is Jose Martinez back for this series?
I’ve seen a lot on here of folks downplaying the injury issue so far and while some guys have struggled, it cannot be denied that key guys going down have significantly impacted the season. Carlos missed a month and with how he’s pitched since coming back, he’s effectively missed more than that. Know a lot of teams that surge forward when they lose their ace? How would Chicago do if Lester was out? Yadi was out for a long stretch. People pooh pooh the Dejong injury but he was playing really well. If he had continued his season pace (which he was accelerating on from his early strikeout issues before the injury) he would be between Carlos Correa and Manny Machado in fWAR for SS. Think that losing either of those guys would hurt those teams’ win totals? Alex Reyes going down again hurt, probably more than we realize.
I guess my point is that I could still see 90 wins with a healthy roster and some shrewd moves. Certainly I don’t think 4th place is likely with the Pirates still punching way above their weight. I’m still not convinced that Milwaukee won’t fade once their bullpen wears down and their starting pitching hits its true talent level.
I really wanted them to sell off some assets last year, which they didn’t do. I think this year’s team is better than last and thought 90 wins was possible, but maybe not the most probable.
Since then, the bullpen has flamed out and key offensive players have struggled mightily at times, but the starting pitching is legit.
I see no real reason to do more than tinker and maybe move some guys for a change of pace. The offense needs the Tommy Pham from May 17 to May 18 to come back or at least approximate it, and the runs will be more easily come by.
In my view, the rotation is playoff caliber. The bullpen has the potential to be. The offense and defense have to improve to be any more than a wild card threat, and that means going forward too.
If Machado gives you greater playoff odds this year and a better chance to sign him long term, then you go for the trade. If not, I guess the absolute need is to try to consolidate some of the “good” talent into elite talent. That’s easier said than done, perhaps.
I would still love the look of a Dejong-Machado left side of the IF with either Gyorko or Wong at 2B and Carp and Jmart rotating at 1B. Better offense, better defense and if the bullpen gets going that’s a good team.
Bader with any kind of evasive maneuver gets around that tag. But I suppose I can’t fault the aggression with two outs.
