I think Reyes will be a better closer than any of the free agent closers. He’s got the stuff, and he sure looks like he has the mentality, so far. Roberto Asuna saved 39 games for the Blue Jays last year at the age of 22, and he saved 36 games the year before.

What experience did Rosenthal have exactly that is different than Reyes?

I think Alex Reyes would be an excellent closer but you don’t have your #1 prospect closing for long.

They need a closer but aren’t going to pay Davis or Holland money for one. Reed would be my guy at 4 years $40 million but I bet bowtie is a little gunshy after the Cecil debacle.

No I would not be cool with that. Holland is not as good as Davis. I would offer Holland three years and $39M.

I don’t think they are that far apart from each other in terms of value. Davis seems like he will have an arm issue soon while Holland already had his.

I mean, even that contract you suggest is only a $3-4M AAV difference. I think it will take 3yr/$45.0M with a vesting option.

I like Addison Reed better honestly. All three are projected right around each other by Steamer for next year.

Alex Reyes is nothing like Trevor Rosenthal. Reyes has the 100 MPH fastball like Rosenthal, but also has a hammer curve and a very good changeup too. He should not be in the bullpen except to preserve innings on his arm.

That is the very idea. Rehab and begin in the Memphis rotation. About the beginning of July, bring him up as a long fireman. As his innings decrease, allow him the opportunity to move to the late innings. This plan could build the innings to ensure he doesn’t have too great an increase next year. We want him in the 120 to 140 range total if he is to move towards the top of the rotation in 2019.
He won’t begin on time anyway, and someone may run with the job. Necessity may have a huge say in the manner of his use at that point.

I like Reed also. I’m just not sure he can be a lockdown closer. I’ve never bought into the idea that “anyone can be trained to be a closer”. Having good stuff and being a good closer are not the same thing. The 9th inning outs require nerves of steel.

They won’t get an elite closer because they are overpaid. They will need to get lucky and develop one. They won’t get Harper, Machado, or Donaldson or any other elite player because they will be overpaid. They will need to get lucky and draft another Pujols. They won’t sign second tier free agents because they are overpaid. Unless they are are desperate enough to show the fans they care and that’s how you end with likes of Fowler and Leake. Two signings that made absolutely no sense. Then they give Yadi that ridiculous contract instead of picking up his option. What they will give Waino?? I wish they would sign Hosmer who at least is on the right side of 30 but they won’t. We have Carp and that’s all we need. I would trade Carp but they won’t. Having Ozuna and Hosmer will make the team better. Will it make them WS contenders, no. But it will be a improvement from that boring team from 2017. I am not smart enough to know the solution to make them WS contenders but I do know the current approach will not work. Other teams will spend more.

One correction, NJ315. While Molina’s prior contract did include an option for 2018, it was a mutual option, not a team option. Molina’s agent had already declared last off-season that they would decline their side of the option, voiding it, and would instead enter the free agent market in the fall if an extension was not completed by the end of spring training.

Ok. Thank you. Then they had to do the extension.

Watching the Mets collapse, I really believe you stagger your young starters. Let Weaver join the vets this year while Reyes and Hudson lock down the pen. Add Reyes next year while Hudson and Hicks contribute to the pen.
