Primarily Cecil, but also Oh and Rosenthal are the reason why. And whoever thought this would happen to Wainwright?
I think they ought to sign Duke if they can get him for 2 years. I don’t think that Sherriff is going to be much help. Cecil is an unknown although I think he can be fixed, or fix himself, during the offseason. It has been shocking to see how poorly he has performed so often this year. Doesn’t make sense.
16. Fernandez The talent that has been raved about has to be there somewhere. Showed significant improvement during the second half.
17. Mercado Impressive performance this year.
18. Woodford Heady pitcher. Only 20 years old. Lots of potential.
19. Carlson Scouts like him. The organization likes him. Very young, but he’s starting to come on.
20. Perez Sure hope he rebounds next year. Love to see Perez in the Top 10. Hard for me not to vote for Sam Tewes here because I just want to. Next year will be more definitive for Tewes.
Lynn shows up every fifth day and almost always pitches well enough to keep us in the game. It gets pretty messy when you have a pitcher who can’t even give you three innings like Flaherty did last night because then the manager has to send a succession of one or two inning pitchers out there to finish a game that’s already been trashed. That’s what the Reds have been having to put up with all year. I think signing Lynn depends on his price. If the bidding runs up to $100M or more, maybe we should take our chances without him. But if he will sign for a price that makes sense, then bring him back. I think Flaherty will be part of a trade package during the offseason. So if Wainwright can’t be in the rotation and if Lynn is gone, there isn’t a lot of depth that is ready, although I would like to see Lyons stretched out as a starter. I’m expecting that whatever is wrong with Cecil will get fixed during the offseason.
Most of the big spenders are already maxed out on their payroll. Some will be saving payroll space for the 2018 free agent class. Supposedly, only San Francisco and St. Louis, and maybe Philadelphia, have shown interest in Stanton. I think the Marlins have a mandate to get their balance sheet in order this year. They might have to take money back in order to move Stanton’s contract.
Many MLB teams already have attendance problems. This can only make matters worse. The NFL is crumbling. Is MLB next?
I have a feeling that Molina doesn’t think that he’s only going to be playing for three more years. That’s why he doesn’t like Kelly breathing down his neck.
Not that it matters that much to most people, but I, for one, am sick of hearing about rest for players. This is a myth started by Matheny. Resting position players should not be the focal point of a manager’s strategy. A manager should push his players to get better and better, not baby them into being something less.
Randall Grichuk batted .235 this year and only hit 20 HR’s. Wisdom’s defense at third is as good as Grichuk’s defense in the outfield. I think he will get claimed in the Rule V draft.
When Pham and Fowler stole third and second last night, Barnhardt bounced the ball down the third base line apparently in an attempt to catch Pham stealing third. Obviously, the Reds don’t have much confidence in him since they extended Mesoraco. I don’t think the Reds are going anywhere with the pitching staff they have and with Mesoraco behind the plate for the next five years. But who knows?
My next best guess is that Kelly winds up with Toronto in a trade for Donaldson. Donaldson will be 32 in December. If that doesn’t happen, then maybe nothing will happen for third base over during the offseason. They will probably at least kick the tires on Machado, but there’s zero chance that they will give him $400M.
The idea of a lackadaisical spring training bothers the heck out of me. I hate the sloppy defense and bad baserunning that comes out of that. For those reasons I am okay if they fire Matheny. The problem is ‘Who are they going to get that’s any better’? Stubby Clapp? Ollie Marmol? Who is going to better than what we have? I kind of think we should just stick with Matheny for awhile longer to see if he figures it out.
Granted that Cardinal fans are inclined to rank Kelly high. But that’s because we’ve following him since he got here. Coaches love him. He’s a student of the catching position. He’s got an air of confidence that doesn’t look at all fake. IMHO, if there ever was a ‘can’t miss’ prospect, Kelly is it.
A hip injury is a pretty serious injury for a catcher. I think that would be a deal killer for a big trade where Mejia was being offered as a centerpiece.
The Reds need a catcher. They already have a third baseman. It is a really rare for a prospect like Kelly to even be talked about in a trade. Obviously, any trade carries risk.
Regarding national rankings, DeJong wasn’t even nationally ranked last year. This year he’s in the conversation for Rookie of the Year.
If Matheny gets fired, I hope they don’t try to replace him with the Reds manager, Brian Price. All anybody has to do is look at the box score from yesterday (9-19), or tonight (9-20), and its clear that he is terrible at managing his bullpen. Also, stay away from Scott Servais in Seattle. He’s been terrible handling his pitching. And so has Clint Hurdle and every other manager with a losing record. Try to get Dave Roberts away from the Dodgers, or A.J. Hinch from the Astros, or Dusty Baker from the Nationals. That will solve everything that’s wrong with this team.
Just looking at the third overall 2010-2014. Didn’t find any misses. All of them are on a big league roster, and contributing.

2014 – Carlos Rodon White SoxOn the other hand, Kelly is considered by many to be the best catching prospect in the game, regardless of what some say about the somewhat injury-prone Francisco Mejia. Its a rare opportunity for any club to have a chance to acquire a prospect like that, assuming that Kelly is even available.
I still think the Girsch should think about offering Carson Kelly to the Reds for Nick Senzel. Kelly’s signing bonus was $1.6M, and Senzel’s was $6.2M. Add the two together and divide by two and you get $3.9M. So, in order to make the trade more friendly, the Cardinals give the Reds $2.3M along with Kelly for Senzel. That way each of the trade partners has $3.9M invested in the trade. (The math might be a bit confusing at first. But it works, if anybody wants to follow it through.)
Cincinnati needs a catcher. They must realize that. Kelly would improve all of their pitching, and that would make the whole team better. The downside for the Cardinals is that Cincinnati is in our division and Kelly might help them more than we would like, and for years to come. The upside is that our uncertainty at third base would hopefully be resolved for the next several years. I think this is a plausible trade, but, as with any trade, there is plenty of uncertainty.
I’d be interested to hear another opinion or two about this.
Don’t waste an option on O’Neill. We already have enough Montgomery(s). Drop Wick or Lucas. Lets see what Wisdom looks like at third base in St. Louis.
The season effectively ended Sunday, unless we want to have fun being spoilers for either the Brewers or the Cubs.
An impression that I got while watching this game is that catcher is the missing link for the Reds’ reconstruction.
I looked hard at Hicks for my #9 or #10. He was the talk of the offseason last year. Its been said that he has a high octane fastball with exceptional movement. This year I read that he was working on his secondary pitches. His stats were not overly impressive… 102 IP, 45 BB, 1.34 WHIP He just turned 21 years old and many think he could be a top tier starter some day.
#6 Dakota Hudson. Tall, 6’5 strapping righthander. Plus fastball, wipe-out slider. Developing 6-12 curve that gets swings and misses. Not afraid to throw an occasional changeup.
#7 J Adolis Garcia This is a five tool player. Could have been ranked higher.
#8 Sandy Alcantara Plus, plus fastball with movement. Agree that he might be our closer at some time next year.
#9 Austin Gomber Has plenty of upside, IMO.
#10 Andrew Knizner Keeping my fingers crossed. A lot of people are open to trading Kelly because of this player.
