The Padres have supposedly offered Hosmer a 7 year deal but I don’t know what the $ amount is.
January 2, 2018 at 6:05 pm #41040Signing Hosmer could also allow the Cardinals to trade Wong, if that brings a better return or makes a better match for a trade partner.
I would think that even after signing Hosmer the Cardinals would still be able to compete for Machado next year. They could even try to sign Harper. I could envision the Cardinals being able to explore trading Carpenter, Fowler, Gyorko and Wong after 2018, IF all the pieces fell together.
January 2, 2018 at 6:56 pm #41041Its also intriguing to read that there is still conversation going on about Josh Donaldson.
January 2, 2018 at 7:09 pm #41042Or is most of that conversation just media speculation…or maybe Boras or whatever trying to push the Blue Jays to sign him already…
January 2, 2018 at 7:39 pm #41043Who knows? Boras definitely uses the media to manipulate thinking. The media then gets paid back for letting itself be used by getting news ‘scoops’ about free agents from Boras.
MO has said that the Cardinals are ‘open for business’ and that their offseason doesn’t end until the first day of spring raining.
January 2, 2018 at 8:25 pm #41045I could envision the Cardinals being able to explore trading Carpenter, Fowler, Gyorko and Wong after 2018, IF all the pieces fell together.
I only see this happening if the team isn’t competitive in 2018. If we sign Hosmer we damn better do it with the idea of being competitive next year or why bother.
January 2, 2018 at 11:39 pm #41050Just my 2 cents but I don’t think Hosmer or Boras want to end up in San Diego. I know he can hit to all fields but he’s not going to like being a lefty in San Diego. IT will dig into his power for sure with that graveyard in RF
7 years is the bar and I don’t think the Cards would go that high. I think clearly they want more money and will wait it out if they have to.
January 3, 2018 at 8:07 am #41055Per Nightengale, here is the Royals’ offer to Hosmer.
Eric Hosmer offered franchise-record seven-year, $147 million deal to return to #Royals
January 3, 2018 at 8:34 am #41066Hosmer might not take the $147M because he thinks he should get a 8-9 year contract, presumably raising the total to $168M or $189M. I guess he figures that $147M is a done deal. So what does it matter if he holds out for a few more weeks for the $168M/$189M. History tells us that, in the end, either the Padres or Royals will cave, and give him everything he wants.

ParticipantScratch Hosmer off your STL wish lists.
Actually you can do the same with damn hear all the other fantasy picks. Just keepin’ it real.
January 3, 2018 at 10:34 am #41080What numbers should I pick in Powerball? Should I invest in Bitcoin? 😉
January 3, 2018 at 10:47 am #41086According to MLB Trade Rumors Hosmer has multiple 7 year offers but Boras is holding out for an 8 or 9 year deal.

ParticipantGive him 8
January 3, 2018 at 11:03 am #41090CC, let me explain. If we sign Hosmer this year and Machado next year, that leaves Carpenter and Gyorko without starting jobs. We have Munoz and Schrock to fill positions if they continue to develop this year. To me, Schrock looks like a hitter that would be great to have starting at 2B. We have O’Neill, Bader and Garcia to replace Fowler. I can dream of a lineup as follows:
C – Molina, Kelly
1B – Hosmer
2B – Schrock
SS – Machado
3B – DeJong
OF – Ozuna
OF – Pham
OF – O’Neill
Reserves – G. Garcia, Munoz, Bader, J Martinez
SP – Martinez, Mikolas, Reyes, Weaver, Flaherty
RP – Cecil, Gregerson, Lyons, Bowman, Tuivailala, Reed, WachaI would actually hope that being able to trade Gyorko, Carpenter, Wong and Fowler, along with some other prospects developing to be traded also, would bring some top notch prospects, SP upgrade or RP upgrade.
January 3, 2018 at 3:00 pm #41106Forsch:
Dreaming is all you can do if want that lineup.
January 3, 2018 at 3:01 pm #41107Without knowing the prospects from those trades I can only evaluate the linup you proposed. Offensively, defensively, and financially I prefer Carp and Wong to Hosmer and Shrock. I probably prefer Machado and O’neill to Gyrko and Fowler but it is not a slam dunk. I think that starting pitching is really young to be championship caliber. Bottom line, I think we can do better!
Regardless, I dont see them making wholesale changes like that unless they are mediocre in 2018. I can’t endorse signing Hosmer if you are still going to be mediocre in 2018.
January 3, 2018 at 3:12 pm #41109Thinking more about Machado+O’neill vs Gyrko+Fowler it is really Gyrko+Fowler+ top notch closer when you consider the cost (with Wacha back to the rotation). In that comparison I see little advantage to Machado+O’neill unless O’neill shows he can hit at the ML level in 2018.

ParticipantCarp and defense don’t go together. Trade him.
January 3, 2018 at 7:47 pm #41120In 2019, Fowler will be 33, Carpenter will be 33, Gyorko will turn 31 during the season. Also, Carpenter and Gyorko could be free agents after 2019 if we don’t pick up their options.
I would love to make the trade I proposed for Freddie Freeman but that would make our rotation very suspect for the next 2 years.
January 3, 2018 at 8:25 pm #41123Forsh, it appears you don’t think Gyrko or Carpenter are worth even their contracts so why in that case would it be negative that they become FA’s?
January 3, 2018 at 10:54 pm #41127They are worth their contracts but what do we do when their contracts are up? We have the financial ability and trade chips right now to shore up the team for the next 5-6 years but we need to act. Besides, I would rather use the theory that it is better to trade someone a year too early rather than a year too late. Or in this case, have no one to replace someone when they should leave.
January 3, 2018 at 11:16 pm #41128Most of the good first basemen are signed long term or won’t be free agents until around 2022. At the time they become free agents, they will be in their low 30s and we will get their aging years. Hosmer presents an unusual opportunity to sign him when he is still in his prime.
Do I think Hosmer is better than Carpenter? No, but I do think he is comparable to Carpenter and he is 4 years younger. I don’t want to give him a ton of money but for $20-$22 million/year for 7 years, he is worth it.

ParticipantI thought that the Hosmer part of this thread was done with. He has huge offers from other teams and he was only a marginal target for us anyway.
January 4, 2018 at 9:48 am #41138I don’t see Hosmer as a $147M+ player. The original estimates for him were were 4yrs./$60-70M, or maybe 6 yrs./$80M.
January 4, 2018 at 10:36 am #41147One thing I just noticed about Hosmer’s batting: every year he had a good year, there were a couple of other Royals who also had good years. On the years that he had a bad year batting, no one on the Royals had a good year batting. Could his every other year tendencies be due to the hitters around him?
