Coming into tonight, we were 4 back in the playoff race and 3 ahead of the team with the 6th spot in the lottery. If Walker is out for significant time, we might just drift toward the latter pretty quickly.

I was struck by the same thing. The Yanks had a lefty face him, presumably for a reason. Any sense of what has changed for Herrera?
He’s fanned 8 times in those 27 ABs, which is a lot. But before he struck out a remarkable 40 times in 73 ABs. Curious if we’ll hear about him on the podcast in the morning…
Maybe Hancel Rincon, though probably not. Or Randel Clemente. Since June 26, he’s fanned 30 in 15.2 ip at AA, giving up just 2 runs, both in the same outing. He’s walked 12, which is less than ideal. But that’s a lot of k’s.
Burly’s wRC+ is up to 129, and Walker’s is down to 130. Their OPS is .830 and .834, respectively. They both now have 2.4 bWAR, though Walker leads in fWAR 3.2 to 2.3.
Burly and Walker’s OPS is roughly 100 points better than the next on the team, Wetherholt at .738, followed by Herrera (.732) and (in many fewer ABs) Torres at .725.

And it’s Mathews who gets sent down to make room for Ferguson. So looks like we will get run of Dobbins in the rotation. I had thought someone official said they wanted to keep Mathews up, but maybe the extensive use of relievers caused this move? Dunno.
Either more work for Baez or keeping his rookie eligibility for next year.
But I’m surprised it’s Prieto instead of Saggese. Saggese is more versatile defensively and seems to have been hitting better at Memphis. Saggese’s OPS was .808 in July to Prieto’s .681. Maybe they have Saggese working on something and want him to continue? Or they want him to play, but Prieto’s job will be to ride the bench? Or they’re hoping Prieto can show something so we can get something for him in the offseason when we need to clear roster space? Weird.
But yeah, I’d think of a lot of Torres and Fermin in LF, at least for the next 10 days or so.
In his last 7 outings, Mautz has given up 3, 0, 0, 2, 0, 3, and 3 runs. That’s 11 runs in 11.1 ip, with 12 walks. I’d guess they don’t think he’s ready, but think he has enough to offer that if they can let him develop more before throwing him to the wolves he might be ok.
Springfield has a 3 game lead in the 2nd half, and the 2nd place team doesn’t really count since they won the first half, so it’s really a 6 game lead.
Are they creating a core–Doyle, Franklin, Hjerpe, Eagen, Lin, Clarke when through rehab, maybe even bullpen guys like Santana and Clemente; position players Raniel, Je Baez, Ortiz, Ragsdale, Peete, Cho–to go for the Texas League championship this year and the International League championship next year, and then play in St. Louis as Memphis Mafia 2 in 2028?
Offense helped more by the short porch in right or by knowing the trading deadline is past and no one with at least two years of team control was dealt, so the core might stick it through together?
Eagen looks interesting, and I’d slide him into that list of players ranked 7-20. Hard to see Arizona’s 5th prospect not being interesting. Not only are his numbers likely elevated by pitching in a hard place to pitch, he had a terrible April but seems to have pitched better since. ERA of 8.71 in April, then 3.79, 4.37, 3.24. And his walks dropped in July, just 5 in 25 innings, after 11 in 22 in June.
Santana seems like a lottery ticket for a lefty reliever.
We won’t know the names on the PTBNL. There are probably conditions where the player(s) we can pick from depends on what Noot does.
I can’t imagine them dropping Stanek. Getting Ferguson tells me they want to have some veteran bullpen work for the end of the season. They’ve seen enough games lost late, and I’d think that a weak bullpen has weighed on the offense.
I’d imagine either Strzelecki or Gastelum gets sent down. Is there something they’ve identified for Gastelum to work on in AAA for a bit?
I’m curious with Dobbins coming back which of the 6 starters goes to the pen. After the last game, and after getting a lefty reliever I don’t think it’s Libby, so Dobbins seems like the most sense, unless they decide to limit Leahy’s innings. But he’s only thrown 107 and he threw 88 last year, so seems like they would be a way from the point they’d need to limit his innings.
I was definitely jumping the gun suggesting a Cho promotion. I think Saggese has been hitting better, so he’d make some sense as a callup.
I take the Ferguson signing to be a signal they don’t think Mautz is ready for an MLB bullpen yet and could use a couple months.
I don’t have a good sense of the arms for the Nootbaar trade yet, but Kyle seems happy. One rumor is that there is another player in this trade, but didn’t signal which team would send the player.
Does the Noot trade mean a Baez promotion is imminent?
I will miss Noot. Very curious if the package we got now is better than what we would have gotten if we waited till the offseason.
One point contra something Brian said…I think May has legit upside. He looked like a monster at times this year, and it’s plausible to think that he will be better next year, a further year from his health problems. I’m ok dealing him, but I really hope he does not resign with the Brewers. I’d hate to have to face him within division.
First thought is Frias 6th. I am pretty high on Bernal. I’m much less sure re where I’d put Ragsdale. I keep reordering the next 14 in my rankings (Mathews, Hjerpe, Clarke, Condon, Ragsdale, Roby, Kuhns, Peete, the other Baez, Gurevitch, Cijntje, Fajardo, Odle). And then I try to figure out where to fit the young guys, Dos Santos, Luna, Cruz, Maniscalso, Padilla, Hernandez…Probably 11th for Ragsdale, but could easily see either higher or lower by a couple?
Baseball America as of 30 minutes ago lists Frias 5th and Ragsdale 11th among the 57 traded prospects as of that time.
That we got a top 100 guy and he’s not in the Brewers’ top 10 per MLB made me realize it’s gonna be a slog against them for awhile.
Two AA CFs makes sense for a team looking at a 2028 window. Church or a rental next year?
I’m not too worried re two LH OFs. Walker will hopefully be around awhile as RH. Joshua Baez is RH. Hopefully they cover that angle for a good while.
One other benefit of the May extravaganza is that he’s proof of concept. I’d think his experience would make it easier for us to sign some other pitcher to a one year for the next couple years.
I am unsure how rational it is, but I’d feel much worse if we traded with the Cubs. Though I probably respect the Brewers’ front office more, so worry that they are more likely to fleece us. But in Chaim I trust.
MLB lists Frias as the Brewers’ 11th prospect, Ragsdale 13th. Both OFs.
BA lists Frias as the 100th best prospect in baseball.
Agree with jnevel re Libby. Makes it harder for me to say who I want to be the 5 starters down the stretch, assuming May is traded. I’d like both Dobbins and Mathews to pitch, but there’s only room for one.
Good to get that win in the last game before the trade deadline. I wonder if they settle at all after the deadline.
Gorman is 6 of his last 23 with 5 BBs and 4 HR’s. He had only 4 HR in his first 83 AAA ABs. Has he figured something out? If so, do you keep him and try him at 3B again in a little bit? It’s not like we have lots of good 3B options…

Can someone remind me the criteria for when a player becomes ineligible for the prospect list? I know 130 PA’s counts. Jordan is at 126 so is very likely to hit 130 today. But Crooks is just at 95, Torres at 89. Crooks will be a close thing by August 15, and Torres probably doesn’t get there.
But do we count 45 days active on the MLB roster? If so, both have used up their eligibility.

There was mention in this thread about calling up Baez in mid-August. But Baez has been struggling of late. OPS of .575 in July. Now, that’s better than Gorman (.573), Saggese (.446), and Scott (.524), but it suggests to me that me might still need to work on things a bit. His non-intentional walk rate is up this month. 8 BB to 54 AB (12.9%) in July, compared to 22 BB in 281 AB (7.3%) before that. I’ve not watched, but I wonder if they are trying to get him to be more selective.
