First thought is Frias 6th. I am pretty high on Bernal. I’m much less sure re where I’d put Ragsdale. I keep reordering the next 14 in my rankings (Mathews, Hjerpe, Clarke, Condon, Ragsdale, Roby, Kuhns, Peete, the other Baez, Gurevitch, Cijntje, Fajardo, Odle). And then I try to figure out where to fit the young guys, Dos Santos, Luna, Cruz, Maniscalso, Padilla, Hernandez…Probably 11th for Ragsdale, but could easily see either higher or lower by a couple?
Baseball America as of 30 minutes ago lists Frias 5th and Ragsdale 11th among the 57 traded prospects as of that time.
That we got a top 100 guy and he’s not in the Brewers’ top 10 per MLB made me realize it’s gonna be a slog against them for awhile.
Two AA CFs makes sense for a team looking at a 2028 window. Church or a rental next year?
I’m not too worried re two LH OFs. Walker will hopefully be around awhile as RH. Joshua Baez is RH. Hopefully they cover that angle for a good while.
One other benefit of the May extravaganza is that he’s proof of concept. I’d think his experience would make it easier for us to sign some other pitcher to a one year for the next couple years.
I am unsure how rational it is, but I’d feel much worse if we traded with the Cubs. Though I probably respect the Brewers’ front office more, so worry that they are more likely to fleece us. But in Chaim I trust.
MLB lists Frias as the Brewers’ 11th prospect, Ragsdale 13th. Both OFs.
BA lists Frias as the 100th best prospect in baseball.
Agree with jnevel re Libby. Makes it harder for me to say who I want to be the 5 starters down the stretch, assuming May is traded. I’d like both Dobbins and Mathews to pitch, but there’s only room for one.
Good to get that win in the last game before the trade deadline. I wonder if they settle at all after the deadline.
Gorman is 6 of his last 23 with 5 BBs and 4 HR’s. He had only 4 HR in his first 83 AAA ABs. Has he figured something out? If so, do you keep him and try him at 3B again in a little bit? It’s not like we have lots of good 3B options…

Can someone remind me the criteria for when a player becomes ineligible for the prospect list? I know 130 PA’s counts. Jordan is at 126 so is very likely to hit 130 today. But Crooks is just at 95, Torres at 89. Crooks will be a close thing by August 15, and Torres probably doesn’t get there.
But do we count 45 days active on the MLB roster? If so, both have used up their eligibility.

There was mention in this thread about calling up Baez in mid-August. But Baez has been struggling of late. OPS of .575 in July. Now, that’s better than Gorman (.573), Saggese (.446), and Scott (.524), but it suggests to me that me might still need to work on things a bit. His non-intentional walk rate is up this month. 8 BB to 54 AB (12.9%) in July, compared to 22 BB in 281 AB (7.3%) before that. I’ve not watched, but I wonder if they are trying to get him to be more selective.
Whew indeed! Feels like another 1-5 road trip with another blown lead would have set up too many memories of last year.
I’m surprised Miami has lost 8 in a row. They were my bet for the main competition for that last playoff spot.
Oh, interesting, Brian! I’ve wondered if Hence’s days on the roster are numbered. I figured they would give him till the end of the year. I’ve not had a chance to listen yet, but plan to tonight. Love the podcasts! I agree with Mautz and Fernandez. I bet Mautz is given an extended run in the bullpen starting tomorrow, replacing Dobbins. So that would leave Fernandez to replace Mathews, if Mathews has a one start initial run in the big leagues, and Fernandez has really not inspired of late!
The last couple days, I feel like Bart Simpson writing on the board “This season was all about development” a hundred times.
Blewett being DFA’d is interesting. We have two successful two inning relief stints from Mautz. I bet they add him to the roster tomorrow to replace Dobbins. That also leaves them with a 40-man spot. Will we finally see a Mathews start later in this stretch of 20 games? Of course, if you add Mathews, you have to send down a reliever, and then you replace Mathews with a different reliever, but there’s no one on the 40-man you’d want for that role. The options would just be Hence, Fernandez, and Hjerpe.

Looking at fangraphs, I’m trying to figure out how they have such a bad record. We face their best three starting pitchers. Their wrc+ is only a tiny bit behind ours. Hope they don’t get ambushed out there.
They seem to be about $1.3 million below slot on the signings so far. Hopefully that, plus the ability go 5% over (another $800K) is enough to get Maniscalco and Randall done.

That’s my guess, too. But could be Mathews joining the MLB rotation and Mautz spending a couple weeks in the AAA pen before any Romero trade. But maybe they give Hansen the shot at the bullpen instead?
6 AAA starters–Mathews, Cijintje, Dobbins, Molina, Mautz, Hansen. Which one moves to the pen? I’d think it would come down to Mautz or Hansen. My first thought was Hansen, but I’d think both Dobbins and Mathews would be in front of Mautz already if they big leagues needed someone. And Molina and Cijintje could get there quickly, perhaps even Henderson. If Romero gets traded they will need a lefty reliever. Maybe it’s time to shift Mautz to the pen? He hasn’t gone 6 innings since May 13. His last two outings are only 2.0 and 3.1 ip.
I don’t know that I’ve ever watched the derby before, but I did last night to see how Walker would do. That was surprisingly and incredibly fun. I was standing at the end, as I do rarely when at home watching baseball stuff. Game 6 of 2011. Times like that.
I’m with the group thinking this might help Walker. Mostly I think it reflects his development rather than predicts it. He’s found a different headspace this season, so perhaps this experience won’t help with that space. But I could imagine him gaining confidence. I think to Albert’s 2022–6 HR through the all-star break, then 18 the rest of the way.
I wonder if he benefited from batting second in the first round. Contreras set something of a standard. Walker would have known 13 was a reasonable target. But only one slot was (possibly) taken by Contreras. Once two guys had 13, there was perhaps extra pressure on the later hitters who might have thought they needed 14. Then since he came in second in the first round, he could hit after the other player. Saved him some work in the second round. Gave him his clear target for the last. Dunno. Probably not. But dunno.
Brian’s point about watching how he handles the extra fame is a good one.
Cijntje’s gone at least 6 ip 4 times this year, but in three of his last four starts. In those three he’s gone 18 ip, 10 h, 3 r, 3 er, 6 bb, 23 k, 1.50 ERA. Now three starts ago he had a clunker, but hopefully the other three are the signal here. He’d walked 34 in his other 62.1 ip.
6-6 in this stretch of 12 games. Win one of the next two and they have run the gauntlet at .500.

Somebody else has probably flagged this, but Crooks has only 10 AB from June 25 onward. Pages has 16.
5-5 in the first 10 of this 14 game run. Very nice to see them bounce back instead of having it snowball on them. And good to see Gastelum navigate that first outing.

I’m much with Brian’s take here. How do the Cards change in the next two? Does May continue and pitch in the playoffs as he has at his best? Does Mathews get the callup and how successful is he? Does McGreevy continue to taunt folks with his pitches? Do they hang on to O’Brien? Odds would be against them, but things happen in short series that wouldn’t happen in the long run. I see these next days as affecting the possibility of a May deal. The more the Cards are in the race, the more I’d think they would need to be offered to deal May.
