There is a great article (at least from us Cards fans perspective) from Baseball America regarding this years draft depth and ranking groups like college and prep pitchers. They have been doing this article annually for 6 years. The article states according to 18 teams scouting directors averaged grades. This year is the best depth average in 6 years. College pitching is ranked average, prep pitching is also ranked the best during the time frame. College hitting is ranked above average.
This should benefit the Cardinals, as their depth with 6 of the first 86 picks. With more in the draft pool to play with, they can both save some $$$ with college seniors, and pick more expensive prep players with high upside. It should be fun to follow this years draft particularly. Maybe the Cards can get back to the top farm system again.The 1% Chance of starting Kuna stateside seems about right. However, if he tears up DSL, they might bring him over for the last month or so. I believe that has been done before.
I’m not sure the Cards had a chance to claim Soriano. Wouldn’t the waiver claim order be by worst record?
I am always excited for spring Training. All the new faces will be exciting to follow. It will be a good battle for the starting rotation, even though we probably won’t see any prospects until mid season. I’m most concerned about our offense. Gorman, Scott II, Walker etc will have to step up their game. I wonder when the first game is?
I’m going to trust Bloom on these transactions. Maybe Granillo was AAAA? I liked Granillo, but Love and Gastelumdo well at Memphis and they can replace him. Possibly Soriano can be coached up? I like Ramos and Velasquez additions as well. At worst Velasquez is minor league depth. Ramos, like Pushard has to make the team or they risk losing them. I did read that the Cards might try and sneak Ramos thru waivers later and DFA him.
I wonder when the Cards will move Roby and whoever else to the 60 day DL? I thought Hjerpe will be ready for ST.
Cards are trading for Nationals Geirge Soriano. The Cards are trading away Granillo. Soriano has good minor league numbers, but with not much MLb success yet.
I like the roster cleanup. We shed a lot of deadwood. One thing for sure, either Gorman or Walker have to show improvement. If they don’t, and Baez his hitting well he swap places with Walker. Maybe give Saggese a chance at third. It’s a make or break year for NG and JW.
I like picking up Ramos as well. He has pop, and is very young. I just wonder who gets cut for his 40 man spot.
I’d like to sign Laweryson. He had a brief good stint in MLB last year, and has solid career numbers in the minors. The Angels just cut him. He’s got to be better than Roycroft.
Okay, so the proper way tocalculate is to add the 13th picks value, plus the comp As value, and add another comp B pick. And then subtract last years 5th overall pick. It may not be perfect. I’m glad others have already figured this out.
T best thing about all the pitching prospects we’ve acquired is that we don’t have to rush anyone. I’m excited about Memphis pitching. They have arms like Mathew’s, Henderson, and Mautz only good performances away from being in the Lou in July or a September call up.
With all the talented prospects added, there will sometime be a need to trade prospects for an area of need. Especially with injured prospects like Roby, Hence and Hjerpe burning up option years. I’m thinking possibly trading some of our pitching for hitters. I’m not saying this year, but as the FO needs to evaluate new players. We also have many prospects at the A/A+ levels. They’re likely 2-3 years from MLB, if ever.
I still have faith in Roby and Hence. Roby was pitching the best of his life when he got hurt. I think he has top of the rotation potential. Unfortunately, we’ll just have to wait.
Based on last years figures, the Cards should have around 19.2 million to spend on their draft picks. The comp A pick ought to be around 3 million, the comp B picks around a million each. Plus I believe they can overspend by 5%. That would give them 20 million total.
The Cards will be in a position to pick a safe player if they desire to, and save up some money to sign more difficult picks.
I think it’s way too early to grade this trade. There are too many moving parts. I think 5 potential prospects directions is a success. I think we still need a right handed outfielder, and an ace or 2 pitchers. But we could have those assets in our farm system after these trades. Plus, there are more trades likely to come.
Now what can we get for Romero? Hopefully a young lefty reliever? Nootbaars trade I think may have to wait. He is not supposed to be ready for Spring Training,right?
GettingPeete also makes me feel a bit better about the return. Very young, with speed and maybe potential power.
