We face a very beatable lefty today. Lets not make him look like the Big Unit out there.
April 17, 2021 at 2:25 pm in reply to: 2021 Cardinals MLB Game 14 thread – Saturday, April 17 at Phillies #158392My take, 5 of the 8 have OPS+ over 100 but the bottom 4 have a K rate problem.
Let’s check Randy Arozarena 59 PA .264 +120 27%

All those question marks still loom.
We do have an increasing body of current data points though. To be considered along with past data. So reality can increasing push aside hype and hope.
Here is an article including audio clip containing the remarks from BDWII.
https:
//stlbaseballweekly.com/dewitt-on-free-agency-winning/I remember BDWII saying to the effect he wouldn’t sign a closer to a long term contract. It was at WWU maybe 3 or 4 years ago. Quite certain about that. Maybe cranny was remembering that but not accurately.
April 16, 2021 at 9:02 pm in reply to: 2021 Cardinals MLB Game 13 thread – Friday, April 16 at Phillies #158345Two takeaways from the game. Carlos’s WHIP for the day was better than the two guys who followed him to the mound. Hurst and Nogowski both popped out to the shortstop. That’s it. Nothing to see here.

April 16, 2021 at 6:19 pm in reply to: 2021 Cardinals MLB Game 13 thread – Friday, April 16 at Phillies #158299Who knows, he could hit a few home runs and they’d probably forget all about it…
True words were never spoken.
April 16, 2021 at 4:52 pm in reply to: 2021 Cardinals MLB Game 13 thread – Friday, April 16 at Phillies #158279Not that I hope anyone gets injured, but it would be fun to see what way to do so they came up with. A doozy I bet.
April 16, 2021 at 4:47 pm in reply to: 2021 Cardinals MLB Game 13 thread – Friday, April 16 at Phillies #158277I say its more astonishment than gloom and doom. But I guess the taxi squad guy you can’t call up is nothing compared to the Palm Beach guy getting called up to the show. I have to admit, I am kind of on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happens next.
April 16, 2021 at 4:38 pm in reply to: 2021 Cardinals MLB Game 13 thread – Friday, April 16 at Phillies #158274Look at it this way. The only position player in alternate camp who is on the 40-man roster is Thomas. Further, Rondon is the only non-catcher position player on the taxi squad. They need some protection, at least. Understand now?
Interpreted to mean its a cluster with no way out. Indeed.
April 16, 2021 at 4:27 pm in reply to: 2021 Cardinals MLB Game 13 thread – Friday, April 16 at Phillies #158270Surprised to see J. Rondon on taxi squad given that the 40 man is now full and he is not on it.
If he’s tearing it up there this year, he’ll be a nice problem to deal with next year
I think the point is a bit of planning in advance would be a good idea. Not that I am confident we will have drafted a third baseman who turns into a keeper. Mo and his computer have a rather inglorious track record in that area.

4. Yadier Molina (R) C
5. Matt Carpenter (L) 2B
6. Paul DeJong (R) SS
7. Dylan Carlson (S) CF
8. Justin Williams (L) LF
9. Carlos Martinez (R) PWhy not use the excess cash this winter to sign an established outfielder and leave Gorman and Edman alone?
I, too, like the idea of spending Bill’s money. But as to Gorman, what is he supposed to do?
Mlb is full of left fielders who don’t have any speed like Gorman. Not an impediment. Another question might be why wasn’t Nogowski shifted to OF the moment Goldy signed, or at least before now.
In the more good news department, although not news. The middle infield consists of Edman, DeJong, Carpenter and Sosa. We know the deal with Carp. Rejuvenation highly improbable. DeJong is looking very like he is continuing the downward trajectory that has been quite consistent since the high point in 2017. Perhaps it is accelerating or maybe he is in a slump, who knows, but a slump in the midst of a downward trajectory that is not accelerating is the high hope. Sosa is probably solid defensively and maybe can be an OK down in the order batter, but no assurance of that.
Edman may have to fill a slot in outfield rather regularly depending on how much drag Bader and/or O’Neill are creating being in the lineup. So two of the three others will be in there a lot. It is a very ugly situation developing if we can bring ourselves to think about the infield rather than the outfield.
A couple thoughts.
1) Any idea that we have better options than running Bader out there need to be re-thought about now that we have seen the alternatives.
2) From what I know, in his last game Thomas looked like he never played outfield before. I think some also say his effort/engagement was not what would be expected of a guy trying to make the most of his opportunity. He is in his 8th pro year and this is the 3rd season he has seen MLB experience. Enough already. If we want to see him as a AAAA guy to have on hand for fill in duty on the MLB roster, fine. He is theoretically CF capable, so fine. But hoping some more experience will make him an answer for the MLB outfield is a pipe dream. The same for the other 8,9, 10 year guys.
3) The writing on the wall might be coming into focus as to how the outfield experiment will end up. Bader will return and be in CF, Carlson will be at one corner, the other corner will be filled by Edman and the AAAA guy du jour, which looks like it will be O’Neill. After the AS break maybe something will develop.
It would be reasonable for Aranado to be wondering what he got himself into. Hopefully Hurst at least will not bungle the defense. That has to be the thinking.
April 15, 2021 at 7:34 pm in reply to: 2021 Cardinals MLB Game 13 thread – Friday, April 16 at Phillies #158197Its hard to express alarm about the situation without seeming to throw shade on Hurst which I do not intend at all. Best of luck to him, but we really do have a problem at the upper level of our system if we have to bring up a guy with 149 AA ABs and split his last season playing between Palm Beach and Springfield. It is stunning to be honest.
April 15, 2021 at 6:01 pm in reply to: 2021 Cardinals MLB Game 13 thread – Friday, April 16 at Phillies #158190Hurst will have an eye opening experience i think. Very limited AA experience and now MLB. Good luck to him.
