I don’t see how we can include Gyorko into the 2nd base overview when the last time he played there was May 23rd.
It’s sounding more like Gyorko’s days in STL are numbered.
The MLB teams listed had some sort of success in the last 10 years. Padres Opened a new stadium in 2004 and had back to back playoff teams and a game 163 it was coming off of, Phillies had a good run of success and new ballpark in 2004, Astros had a solid run they were a couple years removed from a WS appearance. The Braves still had some clout from the Cox era, Angels had a good run until 2009.
Yes the game has declining appeal and Manfred is failing at making the game appeal to a people who just don’t want to spend 3 hours watching it unless some roided up wife beater who kneels at the anthem is taking part. Baseball isn’t for everyone like Golf but it does have it’s core fans and changing the game just ticks the hard core fans off even more. Baseball will be ok and has it’s baseball cities to feed off! However a downturn in success and product on the field can put some teams in a hole that it’s hard to get out of.
I have no issues in doing what it takes to get Stanton. I don’t think he’d be here past 2020 though. I don’t have an issue with Getting Donaldson as a rental for a year if he became available. Machado would be a solid rental if the price wasn’t too steep. However what I’m afraid of is us not having a plan B in case we strike out on Stanton or Donaldson because I feel if we did we need at least 2 FA signing.
I am totally down with Bruce as a plan B. He strikes me more of a cleanup guy han Machado and drives in runs. He’s defense is marginal but he’s got a cannon and it’s accurate. If we signed him to a 3 year deal I wouldn’t bat an eyelash. However I’d take a strong look at Eduardo Nunez as well on a 1-2 year deal with Bruce. Teams might see him as damaged goods after the knee issue but he’s hit the past couple seasons, has some speed, a little pop and can play 3 inf and LF if needed. I’m a fan of hedging your bets and this guy can be a little insurance for the minf and maybe a spot starter in LF. With that fox tv money. It’s time to improve the talent and get some depth and this move with Bruce would improve it. Plus you may be able to still keep Jedd as a platoon for Carpenter and Wong and put him in a role that suits him or u could trade him for a rotation guy or some help in the pen if it came down to it.
I don’t see how the Cubs didn’t have a shot vs. a team that’s known as a bunch of chokers. Plus the Dusty factor is put into play.
All I know is the Nats bats better wake up vs. Lester or they’re making an early exit again.
He can’t manage a bullpen. How’s that for starters!
He does seems to be a players manager. That could be a gift and a curse when it comes down to his job security.
I didn’t see Lilliquist as an issue. I don’t think he and Matheny always saw eye to eye. One other thing to consider is he was technically brought in under Larussa. I wish him well and I think whatever team picks him up will have an asset in the dugout.
Now I did pine for a Dejong call up earlier than he was originally called up. Now that doesn’t mean I don’t think there will be a regression to an under .800 ops guy because that’s exactly what I think we will see. What we don’t want is for him to have a Diaz rapid decent. I think think Dejong is a average defender at best. He seems to have a deer in headlights look on hard hit balls and is slow to react.
Back to Donaldson! I think this is the guy the Ownership would sign off on a deal for. It would take Gyorko and and likely eithr Grichuk or Piscotty and 1-2 prospects but it’s sure worth the investment.
I’m not saying someone won’t pay it. I’m saying some of the big players may back off a bit. Chicago being one of those.
Maybe Anaheim or SF take a risk. He’d do well in OC minus the beach body he lost and the extra hitter he’d face and walk every other AB. I’d think if Cueto opts out that he could land in SF on a nice deal. Both Pitchers parks! Maybe even Seattle.
I’m saying his value hasn’t been lower since he went on the shelf. Some teams have to be scared away and honestly would you rather commit to a 1-2 year deal on a Lackey type guy or on Lynn and 4-5 years.
Lynn has always been a guy I’ve been warm and cold on. He can really do some good things but he can frustrate you with command and pitch count. He has command issue for sure at times but if he gets a 4 or 5 year deal for $18 million per he’d be dumb not to take it. I think he could perform at least at this years level at least for 4 years of a deal maybe even better if he gets his stamina up.
The differences between us is they’ve got 2 cornerstone players and we’ve got none. No one on this team would be a franchise player anywhere. No disrespect to Molina but had we not extended him he’d be a great veteran on a club but not a cornerstone player. He’s an icon here but he’s not a cornerstone any longer. He had a good season.
And be careful on Lynn. His last 5 starts might scare some away from giving him a 4-5 year deal that he wants. He might very take the QO and try and prove he’s a 200 inning pitcher. He’d be a year stronger and past TJ. I’d give it a 30% chance seeing as he’s in that 2nd tier of starters and those don’t get 18-20 million a year 4-5 year deals.
The Cubs clinched the central against STL in 2008i believe.
The Cardinals one may have been one of those where we played and had to wait deep into the night and celebrated the next day at Wrigley. Something wierd like that…

I think Rats is also hinting at that we need a MOTO bat in the lineup and changes need to be made.
I just don’t understand why Oh was allowed to face another batter. You have a guy up the 2nd he leaves the bullpen. Deer in headlights again!
Matheny must want to have next season as a do or die in regards to his job security.
Pham has had a couple brain farts on defense today and that pop out is one of the reason’s this team is where its at. IT’s not a mentally strong or focus club or so it seems.
Oh and he pulls Molina last night knowing he gets a day off today.
Kind of hard to nibble when your manager takes Molina out early again!
Lynn start in San Diego wasn’t great either. Dare I say the TJ wear down has come?
That was a huge win. Walked up in the place after work seeing we were down 3-2. Turn on the game and it’s 3-3 and we get a bit of luck on the grounder.
I think we’re a long shot but I’d like my chances in the WC more heading into the final week if he Cubs win the rest or take 2 of 3 vs Mil and Colorado stumbles in SD and loses 2 more.
Also in that stated above the real chance of a 163 game is possible. Would that be played at Busch?
So many reasons as to why one win at Wrigley. They might of been able to steal 1-2 of those had they gotten a MOTO bad in the middle of the lineup.
It is what it is at this point. They steal one of these and you sit 4 games back not 6. You basically need to go on an undefeated run to have a chance.
Maybe Molina should be a player Manager like Pete Rose. Rats would like that! I’d be up for anything to get Matheny out of here.
I hope DeWitt finally see the light and realizes he’s going to have to maintain a payroll North of $175 million just to make up for the guy running the team in the dugout. Even then….
