Flaherty retirees the Dodgers in order, striking out two. He is at 43 pitches thru two innings.
May retires the Cards in order … a quick inning. May at 35 pitches.
And here come the Dodgers … rough start for Flaherty … Dodgers tie game at 2. Betts a lead off home run and Heyward singled to right to tie the game.
Nice to see the birds get on the board early! Plate two in the top of one. A good start!
A question for the group. We are around a month removed from completion of the WBC. The Cardinals had several players compete this year. Do you think it helped, hindered or had no effect on the players readiness for the major league regular season? For building team chemistry?
Agree 1TD, this was an issue last year. The Redbirds played under .500 against teams with winning records. They mopped up against teams under .500. There is a lot of season left. However, early returns may indicate the Cards rotation may not be up to snuff against the big boys. It will be interesting to see what adjustments are made.
How much longer does the club keep Hicks with the Big League club? He is struggling and needs to get some things corrected. Don’t believe he can do that at the Big League level.
Agree with both you guys. Dodging the bullet for sure!
Wow, nothing has been easy tonight. Hope the Redbirds can dig deep and turn this around.
February 1, 2023 at 2:45 pm in reply to: FOX selling regional sports networks to Disney to Sinclair to MLB??? #211968Agree Brian, I would think they would want to provide an affordable TV option to capture a large cross section of the population in order to improve both exp0sure and fan interest. They seem headed in the exact opposite direction. In addition, we are a few weeks away and a great deal of uncertainty over local broadcasts for a number of teams tied to Sinclair. Ugh!
January 31, 2023 at 5:44 pm in reply to: FOX selling regional sports networks to Disney to Sinclair to MLB??? #211919Just got this nice note from YouTube TV late this afternoon:
“We have been working hard to renew our deal with the MLB Network to continue carrying their content on YouTube TV. However, we have been unable to reach an agreement, and starting today, January 31, 2023, MLB Network content will no longer be available on YouTube TV. You will also lose access to any previous Library recordings from this channel. Members will be able to continue watching select national MLB games via coverage on FOX, ESPN, and TBS through our Base Plan. We also provide the flexibility to pause or cancel your membership anytime.
We apologize for the news and will continue conversations with the MLB to advocate on your behalf, in the hope of restoring their content on YouTube TV.
As always, thank you for being a YouTube TV member, and for your patience and understanding.”
Hmmmm …. wonder what MLB Headquarters thoughts are for TV exposure this year?
January 27, 2023 at 2:56 pm in reply to: FOX selling regional sports networks to Disney to Sinclair to MLB??? #211727A bit of a mess for sure and the start of spring training is not far off. Attached is another article with a few more details (written for Reds fans). The Cardinals would take a financial hit for sure if the facts are correct.
Agree GameCard!
Sounds like Lopez is moving to Minnesota. They are getting Luis Arraez in return. Marlins are getting a good hitter in the deal.
Thanks Bob! I agree that Jesus Luzardo is intriguing and would agree with the concern of trading with Miami. Would you have any concern that the team would be adding another LH starting pitcher?
There is no report … just would have thought it would have been filled by now.
The inability to fill this position is a bit surprising to me. You would have to think that the Cardinal job is one of the more attractive in MLB given their following. I am wondering if the Cardinals are running into roadblocks due to the whole Sinclair Broadcasting situation.
For what it is worth … I enjoy listening to games broadcast with the Cardinals Radio team of Rooney, Horton and Claiborne. They keep things moving and give the listener a good feel of the game. I would hate to see that team disrupted.
Mozeliak’s comments matched my perception … they still have money to spend, if it makes sense to do so.
Bccran, if you are referencing my post, I cited revenue ranking versus payroll ranking as my justification. I recognize that the business has expenses other than player payroll … and that they are not insignificant.
I think most people mix up the current year cash flow versus team valuation. LACardFan hit the nail on the head when he said the team valuation is based on future cash flows. It does not represent cash in the bank until the club is actually sold.
Payroll is financed thru cash flow generated by current year operations less returns provided to investors. I am assuming the Cardinal ownership group expects a positive return each season. No one really knows how much, if any, cash the ownership group gets returned to them year-by-year.
The more relevant gauge of payroll size should be team revenue. Data I have seen on this site and others suggest the Cardinals revenue ranks higher than their payroll. As such, they should be able to spend more.
One more thought. Mo has said in the past that the club preferred not to spend all the payroll budget before the season started. Rather, they wanted to hold some money in reserve to allow for potential deals at the trade deadline if needed.
This Correa situation is unreal! It will be interesting to see what type of deal he will be able to negotiate. I have to believe the amount of guaranteed money he receives will be significantly less that the announced deal with the Mets.
Hmmmm ….
Upon reflection, the Cardinals really dodged two bullets the year Price and Heyward were free agents. The Redbirds were in on both and lost out. That would have been a financial disaster if they had signed both.
The Dodgers are an interesting case. One of the top revenue generators in the sport and for the most part they have stayed on the sidelines. Some experts think they will be active in the trade market … It will be interesting to watch.
Cots shows them paying Bauer $32M in 2023 … ouch!
I am of the belief that the Yankees are making money with a $300M payroll. I am not so sure about the Mets with a $500M payroll. I thinking their spending is driven by an owner who is thinking like a fan and not looking at the bottom line.
I have to believe Cohen’s participation in the free agent market is driving up salaries as much or more than improved balance sheets.
