On KMOX Radio on Sunday, #stlcards President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak provided an update on the team’s player payroll increase for 2023. Don't expect another big splash this offseason. (free) https://t.co/HxKRzE3BoX pic.twitter.com/BPS013oDkE

jj-cf-stlParticipantBB, if you are going to guess, I suppose it’s just as possible it gained ground on mlb.
Your theory, I’ll let you support it by showing your work.January 8, 2023 at 6:50 pm #210643Right, it could be either way. We don’t know.
January 8, 2023 at 7:30 pm #210644“the bet we are making is on Waino, Mikolas, Montgomery, Flaherty and Matz. And you’ve got Dakota in the wings…”
I guess Liberatore’s stock has finally sunk like a cannon ball dropped over the side. Mo really got fleeced on that deal.
January 8, 2023 at 7:40 pm #210646You need to listen to the interview before drawing incorrect conclusions. I stopped transcribing before he mentioned the other starting candidates. Along with Liberatore, forum favorites Woodford and VerHagen were among others named. So there is something for everyone…
January 8, 2023 at 8:02 pm #210647Mozeliak’s comments matched my perception … they still have money to spend, if it makes sense to do so.
January 8, 2023 at 8:16 pm #210648“We did have an opportunity to increase payroll, which it will be higher than what we played at last year. So that’s fact no. 1.
Hmmm, really? Regardless, now do real dollars instead of nominal dollars.
January 8, 2023 at 8:27 pm #210649Yes, I didn’t listen long enough to hear about the extras. I agree with 1964cards, Mo has dry powder at hand. I am OK with heading into camp with what we have. At some point during the season the pitching staff will need reinforcements. It will probably play out like the last couple years. In the end, it wasn’t the pitching that did us in.
January 11, 2023 at 5:12 pm #210752From Sportico:
“Major League Baseball teams have spent a record $3.36 billion on 99 free agents alone this offseason, according to figures amassed by Spotrac.”
January 11, 2023 at 5:23 pm #210754When you factor in Brandon’s inflation, the payroll has drastically decreased the last few years.
January 11, 2023 at 5:42 pm #210756Haha! Every time I make a trip to the grocery store I imagine myself having to pay for parking prior to entering and being charged $25 for a hot dog and Coca Cola…

Source: Jordan Montgomery, Cardinals settle at $10 million, avoiding arbitration.

January 13, 2023 at 11:43 am #210820#STLCards and RHP Jack Flaherty once again avoid arbitration by reaching a one-year, $5.4 million deal. With hopes high that he can be a healthy staff ace in 2023, Flaherty will be pitching with potentially massive free-agent money on the line in the season to come. https://t.co/MO4UQCBat4

January 13, 2023 at 12:39 pm #210828Unlike in 2022, when a messy arbitration case played a role in marring his season, Tyler O’Neill agrees to a contract to avoid arbitration this time around. O’Neill, an Arbitration Level 2 player, will be looking for a big bounce-back season in 2023 after struggling badly in ‘22. https://t.co/BtP2a7Dlmx

January 13, 2023 at 1:24 pm #210829Not sure what the final numbers are on Edman and Knizner.
We will exchange salary arbitration figures with LHP Génesis Cabrera & RHP Ryan Helsley following today's deadline.

January 13, 2023 at 2:24 pm #210833A lot of people, including myself, have called attention to the fact that Jack Flaherty will be showcasing himself in ’23 for a potentially big payoff in the event he features a nice performance prior to being eligible for free agency in ’24. Well, that’s also the case with Jordan Montgomery. The sort of money that these two guys could possibly command on the FA market is a tremendous motivator. It’d be real nice for the Redbirds if these two SP’ers can provide a nice left/right punch as members of the Cardinal 5-man in ’23 in order to prove that they’re both worth the type of money they’d potentially command if they can both take the baseball every fifth day and consistently feature nice work.
January 13, 2023 at 2:31 pm #210834BW…I’ll always be sceptical of the concept that a “messy” arbitration case plays a part in any players performance on the field of play. And if it indeed does, that onus is placed directly on the player.
January 13, 2023 at 4:42 pm #210837With most arb-eligible players now signed for 2023, here's a quick recalculation of a #stlcards 26-man roster payroll. Estimate for Cabrera, Helsley; account for pre-arb players; factor in signing bonuses, deferments, and it's around $174m. Check my math: https://t.co/FP1u3Unrs0

January 13, 2023 at 4:55 pm #210841A quick and (hopefully) informative read on today's arbitration deals by the #STLCards, FREE at The Cardinal Nation. https://t.co/BsVrN4SruN pic.twitter.com/G31MVNLoYf

January 13, 2023 at 8:09 pm #210847I suggest that the Cabrera hearing is an intentional move to force him to hear his weaknesses publicly.
