I guess he can be a #3 for a bad team – sure I’ll give him that. I don’t think he is on a good team though…
I do get sick of the toxic positivity of our announcers. Brad Thompson is the worst but Chip isn’t far behind. They are afraid to be the least bit critical….
I know others have said this but good grief offensively we are absolutely horrible.
Of course the pitching isn’t good either …
I think the only thing we do well is damage out all you can eat buffets. Definitely some all-star appetites on the roster.

Gray is shot and all the others are #4 or #5 guys at best.

Yeah that’s what the rest of 2025 is all about as we continue to sift through players trying to figure out who to keep and who to cut / trade off.
Bloom has his work cut out for him but he’s at the end of his 2nd season so he should already have most of it figured out.
I hope his plan – whatever it is – works.
Well if he can trade Gray and / or Arenado he’d be a hero instead of a goat here.
We need 3 good starting pitchers, a closer, a set up guy,a catcher, and two MOTO bats – one in the outfield and one in the infield.
We have enough of everything else to construct a pretty good roster – but ZERO studs to build around – plenty of edge / filler guys though.
We can develop players, sign FAs, and / or trade for them.
Off the ML roster for now I’d keep Winn, Walker, Scott, and Herrera. I’d be willing to trade anybody else.
Nootbar, Burleson, Gorman, Contreras, Arenado, Donovan, etc. can all go.
I like Contreras’ offensive numbers as a catcher but at 1B not good enough.
I love Donovan but you have to give to get.
I guess the moves Bloom makes over the winter will tell us how long he thinks it will take to find a WS type team again…
This is the part of the season when the buyers inflate their records and the sellers pile up the losses.
Many years I watched the Cardinals go from 15-20 games over .500 up to 30-35 games over .500 by feasting on the bottom feeders this part of the season.
The Cards were bottom feeders in ’23 & now in ’25. I would not call them that last year although they barely poked their heads over .500.
This year the bats will probably have to wake up to stay above .500 because the back end of the bullpen has obviously been gutted.
Oli’s overall record will probably dip below .500. His first year ’22, is easily his best and will likely remain so for quite some time.
The past decade:
No playoffs: 2016, 2017, 2018, 2023, 2024, 2025
Playoffs: 2019, 2020, 2021, 20221 playoff series win over an entire decade. Think about that.
We gotta hope Bloom is ‘the man’ because if he’s not the misery will continue for at least 5 more years…
So – this isn’t a reset this is now morphed into a rebuild.
The Cardinals used to have a deep farm system that fed the ML roster AND also provided enough extra prospects so that THEY could trade from depth to secure the ML veteran or two they needed to round the roster and make that nice run into the playoffs.
Those days are long gone and as painful as this is going to be it’s why the Astros are the Astros. They took their lumps for a few years but built it the right way and they went to seven consecutive ALCS.
This IS hard to stomach though. We haven’t been really good for a decade and ’23-’25 have been pretty rough. Now we are faced with the reality that we are going to have to take our lumps for 2-3 more years before we can get back to what we became accustomed to.
2026 is likely to be pretty bad. We are apparently stuck with Gray and Arenado. We ARE building up our stable of prospects some of which will come through and some of which can be traded for other assets. But 2026 and 2027 look pretty bleak especially coming on the heels of the last decade.
It is what it is and hell, we may not even have baseball in 2027 due to labor issues which would set the rebuild and player development back an entire year.
Pretty depressing to be a Cardinal fan right now.
Maybe Doyle steps in at the #5 spot immediately? The SEC is about like playing AA ball? Not sure on an accurate comparison….
Gray, Liberatore, Pallante, McGreevy, and ?? in 2026 now? Maybe Leahy or dumpster dive for an old retread?
3 A ball guys for impending free agent Helsley. We got prospects for Montgomery in ’23 – any of them seen the majors yet?
I’m not saying it’s the wrong thing to do for an expiring asset but there’s is a good chance none of the three ever really contribute.
The team needs a top shelf chef to put the roster in a blender adding and subtracting ingredients as necessary to create a WS contending concoction. 2026 and 2027 will tell the tale on Chef Bloom. If he’s good so will be the Cardinals – if he’s not then the misery will continue.
Look at just how long the Cubs and red Sox went between titles. 108 and 86 years respectively. That is what can happen with a combination of bad luck and bad to mediocre management / ownership.
There is no way to really know until the outcome is readily apparent. We can THINK we know and THINK we can read the tea leaves – but we really can’t; there are simply too many moving parts and forces at play that no one can control.
I think Pages being the main catcher happened more by accident than anything else. Herrera just didn’t quite work out due to his defense and injuries.

Every other SP we have is a #4 / #5 guy.So, next year will be, “Second verse, same as the first” and we’ll just stagger along at .500 +/-?

Sigh…..The fans aren’t coming back because Bloom is getting promoted, lol.
Well, yes but they have to run somebody out to the mound, lol. They are just getting this season over with at this point.
