Cards were clinging to a 1-0 lead thanks to a Burly bomb. Pallante gives up a three run HR to Steer and it’s 3-1 Reds.
Pallante has had a miserable season. We all seem to pencil him into the 2026 rotation but I don’t know about that.
When Pallante pitches, you just feel like you’re going to lose. He has given up 30 runs in his last 33 innings. I feel we should been using a pitcher like Taylor to see what he can do. Or even stretch out Leahy. Bullpen games? Just try someone different.
Reds win this one 6-2.
Cubs won today as well 8-4 over Pittsburgh.
Milwaukee plays the Angels tonight at Miller Park. A loss and it’s only a four game lead over the Cubs. A win and they stay at five games ahead.
We are 19 games back of the Brewers and about 14 behind the Cubs. I see no reason to think we’ll catch both of them in 2026 and probably neither one.
I do wonder what the goal for 2026 will be…. The year of the ‘runway’ is over. We kinda know who (of the younger guys) can play (Hererra, Wynn, Burleson, McGreevy) and who can’t (Walker, Gorman, Pozo, Pallante) plus a few tweeners (Scott, Saggese, Nootbar, Pages).

What’s the goal in 2026? Field a team and play 162 games while waiting for 2027? I’m not sure, lol
I’m about ready to throw in the towel on Gorman, Walker, and Pallante. Time to give somebody else a chance.
IDK what to think about Pallante chances to start next year. Based on performance I’d say it’s darn near impossible to see him in the rotation. Then we see how the team has spent and then I realize it’s a real possibility he ends up as the #5 because we likely will band aid the rotation with a quick fix tradable assets who is cost controlled.
What is 100% etched in my brain is Walker in AAA and Gorman somewhere else in 2026. They can’t be on this roster next season. 0-8 with 6 Ks today. Seen enough of the Gorman wind farm. Should be in the Mexican league. Walker needs to go down for a reality check and look at college brochures like MIT or something and possibly prepare for a career outside of the game of baseball. I don’t know if Korea or Japan would take him.
Previously, hope was tied to his “deathball”. Maybe they can come up with something else.
Maybe we can call it the death spiral ball because if he doesn’t pull it together next year his career could spiral out of control to somewhere like the Doosan Bears or the Yakult Swallows.
He can’t reach the Ken Hill 18 losses but he can fit in 2 more can’t he?
The amazing part about this season is that the Cardinals could very easily be 2 games behind the Mets for the final wild card spot. They had a chance to win the final game with Seattle. They could have won the game against the Brewers when they were up 6-1. They could have taken another game against the Reds in this series. That’s 3 wins to put them tied with the Diamondbacks just 2 games back.
I dont think pallante should be considered def in the rotation. Imorovements need to be made in offseason if so. Im thinking maybe back to bullpen or possibly trade bait.

That sort of trade bait won’t even catch us a minnow, Willie. Matter of fact, if Pallante were to hit the waiver wire, it might take a few days to even get a nibble. Hate being negative, but even though we have seen Cardinal teams with worse records, this 2025 squad may be the least entertaining and inspiring squad that I’ve seen. Next year promises to be much much better……can’t wait until spring training.
Andre can’t disrupt timing with offspeed pitches because he can’t throw them for strikes consistently.
Mikolas has better pitches and command of them. I’d rank Andre after Mikolas but before Fedde.
On the other side of the “just three more wins” view, their Pythagorean record would be exactly three games worse than where they stand, at 71-82. A big reason why is their season run differential of -58 runs. Over the long haul, it is awfully difficult to win a majority of your games when you can’t score as many as you give up.
So for now we have Gray, McGreevy, and Liberatore penciled in as 2026 starters.
Mikolas if course is gone and Pallante is probably going to the pen.
I read an article about the possibility of resigning Mikolas. (ugh)
Gray might be traded but I think that is unlikely.
Do we think Quinn Matthews will be ready?
It appears Bloom is going to need to conjure up 2 or even as many as three starting pitchers for 2026.
On Mathews, check out a recent post on the minor league game thread. Walks are a huge and ongoing problem.
Mikolas would be ok, if he only pitched at home. Unfortunately, that is not practical.
