I don’t think there’s any valid argument to be made there. While game 1 against the Phillies was disappointing, they ultimately got beat by a team that was pretty optimized for October. Hard to knock losing to a team with 2 legit aces.
The 2023 Cardinals finished last place for the first time since I was under 10 years old. There’s no argument that can be made that trumps that basic fact. It was an embarrassing all around performance that did a lot of long term damage to the once great Cardinal brand. Who knows how long it will take to recover?
The handling of both his SP’er and closer in game 1, coupled with the lineup cards for both games clearly indicated that something disastrous was taking place inside of his coconut…Any Cardinal that watched the late innings of game 1 was subjected to something not at all unlike a bizarre horror film. Those two games defined the sort of manager he’s proven himself to be.
There was a lot of bellyaching over the way that Marmol handled the game, but when you score 2 runs (thanks to the manager’s good guess on the pinch hitter), and then your 1.25 ERA reliever blows it…I don’t necessarily think it merited the sort of consternation that it caused. Tony Larussa did the sort of things that Marmol did there often and was considered a genius, because of course it worked. Marmol’s moves didn’t.
The entire 2023 season felt like the end of that game…not much hope from the jump. That has to be pinned on the manager and front office for not doing a good job motivating the team. They gave up. Marmol could easily have been fired for 2023. For 2022…hardly. He did a pretty decent job that year, overall.
Well, the reliever who sported the 1.25 ERA who “blew it” had suffered a jammed up middle finger to his pitching hand a couple of days prior. He was summoned from the BP by the little whiz-kid in the visitor half of the 8th and assigned to record the final 5 outs of the game. Anyone who watched in horror as that game slipped away knew that Helsley was leaking copious amounts of oil long before he was mercifully removed from the game. However, long before that debacle, the resident genius went and got a SP’er who was obviously on auto-pilot and had total command of the game allowing only 2 hits and 0 runs on only 75 pitches in 5.1 innings of outstanding work. The Cardinal manager should have been tarred and feathered and then run out of town long before he summoned his injured closer with 1 out in the 8th and foolishly looked on and did absolutely nothing until it was far too late as the game burned away in the fire that he negligently allowed to ignite…
And I’m in total agreement with your assessment of how the ’23 season played out and instantly took on the same sort of feel and atmosphere as did that ’22 NLWC series. And everything’s been entirely askew and out of order since. My theory is that when a manager of a baseball team behaves in a manner so incredibly foolish and stupid as did the Cardinal manager in that post-season series, the evil baseball gypsys take notice and immediately pounce to administer a terrible baseball curse that makes certain that the offending team suffer until the perpetrator of the stupid and foolish baseball behavior is shipped out…Haha!
Looking at some video clips on a web-site that’s devoted to baseball stuff and was once again reminded of being 10.5 games in back of a WC berth on Aug. 25th. Then, over two months later saw a big RH’ed SP’er receive a standing O after his manager walked out to get him in the 7th inning of a game 7. The HOF manager then handed the baseball to a 41 year old LH’ed pitcher named Arthur Rhodes to preserve a 6-2 lead. That baseball team still hasn’t quit. And it never will.
Great observations 1tough. You put all my thoughts even the ones i cant remember to words. Lots of those i wish i could remember though i feel lucky just remembering my name in the morning. And before anyone thinks im being offensive,im very sensitive to the plight of people with worse conditions so dont try to claim otherwise.
It just all feels so hopeless right now. I realize it’s not as bad as it seems and a couple of years from now the team could be flying high. It just doesn’t feel like it at the moment.

1tough, as a met hater from days of old, i totally would be fine with the reds doing that. They have been pretty inconsistent but you get hot at right time, things can happen.

The Brewers inch closer to the NL Central crown.
Obviously there hasn’t been much if any baseball to get excited about in StL. and I’ve found that to pretty much be the case around the entire league this season. Normally there’s a team or two that I can find a reason to get interested in whether they be an underdog that comes out of nowhere to suprise everyone or a genuine powerhouse that threatens to win well over 100 games. Nothing like that this season. It just seems pretty mundane and wearisome around the league in ’25. Hopefully the post-season will provide something exciting and out of the ordinary. Maybe something like a Tigers/Dodgers WS with the two lefties Lolich/Koufax throwing out the ceremonial first pitch? I’ll watch that…
