As you would expect, day games today.
Memphis at Round Rock: Jack Flaherty
Springfield at Frisco: Sam Tewes
Palm Beach “at” Jupiter: Austin Warner
Peoria vs. Burlington: Evan GuilloryRound Rock has to be demoralized. They are down 3-0 in the series and now they have to face Flaherty.
3 games in and Springfield doesn’t look anything like I thought they would. Starting pitching and bullpen have been bad.
Speaking of demoralized, I looked up their head-to-head results. Since the start of the 2016 season, Memphis is 19-2 vs. Round Rock.
The RR announcers have been on the milb.tv broadcast so far, Friday night they made the comment Memphis has to be one of the best AAA teams. To last night expanding that to best AAA team of all time. I am sure that is very subjective comments, probably goes into some of the rationalizing when you have been so beat down.
But I am hoping to listen in today with Flaherty being on his game to hear there reaction.
Not shocked about the results from the Springfield pitching staff. Relatively inexperienced rotation and ‘pen. The jump from high-A to Double-A is bigger then most realize. Anxious to see how Tewes does today another year off Tommy John.
Helsley should do better and Greene too. Springfield’s team looks pretty meek to me other than MI and CA.
Memphis, on the other hand, could very well eat a few ML teams even.
As I have said before, I see this as the beginning of a drier spell for the farm system. Memphis’ success will draw attention away from it this season and Springfield should be respectable, but below, does not look nearly as promising.

One thing the Cards have clearly done is to bring in a cast of outsiders to shore up their weak outfield depth. Look at the OFs who have joined the organization in the last year-plus, starting with the Cubans, then O’Neill, and all the guys over the winter – and Mieses now.
Andy Young hit his first home run of the season for Palm Beach today. He’s definitely an intriguing middle infield prospect with pop.

Was reading a article on VEB(Sabernerd Cards site) and some guy was giving his thoughts Opinions) on who could be traded from the Memphis roster this season.His top choices Tyler O
Neill and Mercado.Why would anybody trade a 22 year kid with plus power who plays pretty defense and has a pretty good arm?I know its a Sabersite and they value OBP more than power but in a system nearly without power bats why trade a young kid who has shown improvement and is going into his 2nd AAA season at age 22? Yet tyhey slobber over a 25 year old who has not even played a full season of AAA because he plays good defense with a good arm?I like both prospects ONeill and J.A. Garcia because each bring something to the team that the Cards need.ONeills power and Garcia`s defense.The reasoning behind this kind of thinking just astounds me.Sorry about little rant but its still baseball in spite of people trying to number everything.Poor Oviedo may never pitch. I wouldn’t be surprised if they have him throw a side session and move ahead in the rotation.The Peoria Chiefs and Burlington Bees game scheduled for Sunday has been postponed due to inclement weather. The game will be made up on Thursday, May 31 as part of a doubleheader between the teams starting at 5:00 p.m. at Dozer Park.
To avoid consecutive double headers, the previously scheduled double header for Wednesday, May 30 will now be moved to Tuesday, May 29.
Bw52, I did not read the article, but my general view is that O’Neill has a skill that is very rare in this system – raw power. I would not want to trade him away until we can see if he will be Grichuk 2.0 or can be much more.
In the case of Mercado, how many other players in this system have ever stolen 50 bases in a season? If Pham isn’t going to be a Cardinal long-term, then I see Mercado as the next hope as a prototypical CF.
Having said that, yes, there is going to be an OF numbers problem in a year or so. I am just not sure what to do about it yet. The good news is that minor league options are NOT an issue – so there is no reason to start making trades they could later regret before they are necessary.
ONeal continues to feast on Round Rock pitching. He has 4 HRs and 10 RBIs in 4 games. Urias is listed at 5’ 10”, but he looks shorter. Arozarena showed an excellent eye drawing 3 walks leading to 3 steals. Round Rock had no answer for Flaherty. Garcia struggled today. Does anyone know what happened to Luke Voit? He got pulled after one at bat on Friday and did not play this weekend.
I would only consider moving O’Neil if we have Ozuna locked up long term.
I am trying to imagine what O’Neil might do in Albuquerque or Reno. Round Rock is one of the worst stadiums for hitting in the PCL.
Hi Brian, You mentioned a few posts ago that Oviedo may never pitch because of the Sunday cancellation. However, the BOXSCORE shows he started Saturday night and didn’t last very long! Am I missing something here?
