until the Cubs get another starter i dont see how they will be better than last year despite the “hangover”
Heyward was poor
Zobrist was poor
Russell was poor
Schwarber was poor
Quintana wasnt what they expected…not terrible but not greatAlmora is a nice but seems to be far from a sensational offensive player
Happ was a nice surprise
Baez took a step forward IMO
Contreras broke outRIzzo and BRyant are stable MVP awesome guys…that fixes a lot
they have zero depth in the minors
Zobrist is old
Lester is getting oldthe rotation has big question marks
for all the down years of guys that anyone could say “well those guys will be better” they have guys that outperformed, and they have guys that are older
IMO they are an injury to Lester away from being in 3rd place…and should the guys who are supposed to get better NOT get better…they might already be 3rd place
they add a top end SP…they are safe….but even then they are walking the line on hoping for no injuries… how long can they go before Bryant or Rizzo dont get hurt…it happens to everyone
Heyward has always been mercurial
Zobrist isnt going to get much better and really isnt a starter anymore
Russell has been up and down with his offense too
Schwarber…will his bat show back up to outperform what they lose from his poor defense
will Contreras have another career year?
will Happ get better or will he be another HR or nothing flash in the pan
will Baez continue to progress without striking out or go back to the K every day guy (his defense is amazing though, i don’t like his attitude on the field but man he is fun to watch)
which version of Hendrick and Quintana will show up?
was Chatwood’s poor performances REALLY about Coors? and is he really healthy?
Will one year of good non closing play from MOrrow really make him a dominant closer? (Davis saved them on several occasions last year)i think the Cubs are far from shoe ins to win anything…and the question marks they have are pretty extensive…i think they will make a move before we start the season but if not im not handing them anything
for better or worse the BRewers and Cardinals have went out and made moves to the plan their organizations put forth…the Cardinals have probably been the MOST active team this offseason with moves..and the BRewers seem to be doing the same thing now
to me i see a 3 headed snake for this division with the Cubs, Cardinals and BRewers as of today
the next team to make a bold move will nudge itself ahead..
the Brewers seem to be that team at the moment…followed by the Cubs…If the Cardinals are really done…we may be looking at an uphill battle in the division as we pin our hopes on youngsters and unprovensIMO…seeing the interest in Salazar by the BRewers…i think they make that deal happen…
Santana for Salazar…upgrading their rotation and that combined with a healthy Nelson being enough for themthen the Cubs sign Darvish…
a bold hitter get for the Cardinals woudl be nice…but i want the top end starter help..i dont want to pay for Arrieta…and Lynn and Cobb seem to want too much…trade for Fulmer, Stroman, Teheran, Archer…somebody young and controllable that has already proven themselves
i dunno… after Cain and Yelich…and knwoing they will undoubtedly move one really good outfielder (Brox, Santana, Phillips) which means they have another GOOD move about to happen…i put the BRewers in 1st place on paper right now
January 26, 2018 at 11:16 am in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2017-2018 #42635Realmuto is there for there getting…I wish Castro was good at SS and i might consider him too
i know i harped on him over and over probably alone…but snagging him frees up Kelly for trade if nothing else….Realmuto is better than Kell as a backup obviously and maybe as a part time starter with Yadi and future catcher too…he can play 1b he hits well he plays GG level defense and we could get him
new new ARcher idea
-trade for Realmuto and he answers the extra offensive upgrade (i dont think we need a HUGE one, the offense isnt bad)
-trade Kelly for Archer which gives us the extra punch for the rotation AND it helps the bullpen as Reyes slots into the pen easily AND means one of the current rotation switches to the pen (Waino?, Mikolas?), unless we trade one of them in the deal for Realmuto-Realmuto and Ziegler (salary dump) for Hicks (after this big offseason of hyping his value up) + JMachado + JeremeyMartinez/Ortega
-Archer and Hechevarria (salary dump) for Kelly + Hudson + GGarcia + lottery ticket-CMart, Archer, Wacha, Weaver, Mikolas/Wainwright…with Flaherty and Reyes
(much better punch and still young depth)
-Greger, Leone, Lyons, Ziegler, Cecil, Brebbia, Bowman, Wainwright/Mikolas….Reyes
(deep pen, lots of options, can drop Ziegler if he fails, Brebbia and Bowman have options)
-Fowler, Pham, Carp/Gyorko(3b), Ozuna, Realmuto/Carp(1b), DeJong, Yadi, Wong/Carp/Gyorko(2b)
(versatile, and order has room to change depending on who steps up)
-Realmuto/Carp/Gyorko, Bader, Hechavarria, JMart
(might be the best bench in MLB, incredible versatility, all players are starter level players and the team wouldnt get terribly worse if they had to start, 4 man bench problem of wasted backup catcher spots is gone with Realmuto getting time at 1b, better great backup defensive replacements, backups 1b is mitigated by having 3-5 options)even if the trade values are off a little bit, snagging Realmuto and Archer for Kelly and a couple good pitching prospects and others farther down would be a boon for us. We gain very good players not making very much money…id even splash harder with Kelly + Flaherty to get Archer if need be…or find a way to move Wacha in a trade to free up possible depth issues in the rotation
I know Realmuto does scream upgrade offensively like LOMOs 38HRs or whatever, but i dont think we really need that kind of offensive upgrade, his upgrade comes from the benefit to the bench and versatility of making super subs out of Realmuto Gyorko and Carp, those guys all could get starter innings over the course of the year
Have to imagine they have a deal almost ready for a trade of Broxton/andor Santana
probably for a starter… Teheran might be a good target
makes me wonder if they are maybe looking at Archer or one of the MEts starters
January 25, 2018 at 10:40 am in reply to: Cardinals OF roundup, who stays and who goes? (Grichuk) #42583right…
i guess the point is that, it isnt really fair to assume everyone reads the front page every time they visit the forums…whether a member or not
and in the case of URias…it’s probably pretty easy to overlook him as his signing coincided with Guillmet who seemed to be the only one anyone really focused their reporting on…
i take no offense in missing anything of importance as i jump around and my focus jumps from various platforms…i expect to miss things
but someone name dropping Urias and expecting everyone to be on board with understanding who he is based on a members only article which coincided with another signing who was already a pretty boring news day shouldnt be surprising
i dont expect anyone to repeat the whole article…but something along the lines of:
“No worries i understand why anyone would have missed him…Urias…Ramon… recently signed out of Mexico, middle infielder…we had an article about him, it was in the PReston Guillmet article if you want to go take a look”
I know you arent picking on me…but i think understanding that everyone here isnt a member, as well as they may not even go to the front page and it was in a pretty obscure article to begin with
repeating a little info that has to be paid for isnt a big deal…and if that is the only real place to know who a guy who comes up in a discussion is it kind of seems necessary
the thing i am kicking myself over is that i keep forgetting about Tovar!
Thanks for all the hard work Brian!
January 24, 2018 at 5:18 pm in reply to: Cardinals OF roundup, who stays and who goes? (Grichuk) #42557That’s cool Brian… no worries… my bookmark to this forum comes straight to this forum, and not to the front page, so i miss the new stories often because i start at the forum and then go to the front page for the articles
probably shouldnt do that, but perhaps others do the saem thing
im just excited i get to go look at a new player for the system!
and very intriguing…2b/ss split time in 2017
hit for good average and had 19 HRs last year in mexican league…im sure that wont carry over, but he can obviously hit it out of some parks.. decent amount of walks and strikeouts werent TOO highfun
January 24, 2018 at 2:55 pm in reply to: Cardinals OF roundup, who stays and who goes? (Grichuk) #42548Munoz played basically SS and OF last year between AA and AAA with a sprinkling of 3b
Valera played 2b and OF…and OF in the winter
Schrock played 2b only at AA
I feel dumb but i dont know who Urias is… i thought maybe Luis Urias but i thought he was in the Padres system…he split time at 2b and ss at AA San Antonio
January 24, 2018 at 2:12 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2017-2018 #42543obp ops and average are way lower…morrison struck out like about 50 more times…70ish more hits 20ish more runs…
MOrrison hit 38 bombs which is impressive but is he really going to duplicate that? Hosmer hit 25 which is high for him i guess but 20 isnt out of the realm
to me MOrrison’s year seem a bigger outlier than HOsmer’s
HOsmer did win the GG, and SS for 1b in the AL…and got MVP votes too…that does count for something…maybe he isn’t going to get the same accolades in the NL but that he is still top quality
for the money difference i can understand the argument… i guess i just feel like Morrison is the type of guy we are trying to get away from (ala Adams, Grichuk)…
Homser’s consistency and ability to put the bat on the ball and keep an average up i think has a lot of worth…will you get last year out of him for a 7 yr deal..no way…but i think he will be good for the next 5 yrs…
but like i said…i get the hesitancy with the money and years for Hosmer…for one year deal…maybe two out of MOrrison…i guess…but Carp is going to play if on the team and JMart is too..so unless MOrrison can channel his inner 4years ago ability to play outfield i just dont see it
I’d rather stick with Carp and try JMart then try to figure out a way to make Morrison work…
i guess i just dont see the appeal of LM…as i have no confidence he can improve let alone sustain last years performance with the way he hacks up there…i get the appeal of HOsmer due to his high bat on ball skills…will the power fluctuate..yep i think so…but the defense and bat skills wont…I dont know if i want to pay him all that money for 7 yrs or whatever…but id rather have Hosmer or neither over Morrison… but that’s MY opinion
and i understand the interest
January 24, 2018 at 1:06 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2017-2018 #42540I am really not trying to be antagonistic, but can someone explain the interest in Morrison?
He just seems like an all or nothing kind of guy. Moose is similar i guess, but HOsmer seems to bring average, even if his power from last year was a fluke
January 24, 2018 at 12:04 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2017-2018 #42533oh right…sorry for 3 in a row… but it’s a new day so another ARcher idea
Archer + Hechavarria
for
Kelly + Hudson + GGarcia + Lucas/Gant/Mayers or another RP on the 40man..i think DGonzlaez is high upside(2 very good prospects and strong pinch hitting backup 2b/3b man, who may be borderline starting 2bman material)
Adames is ready to go for TB so they dont need Hechavarria’s defense at SS anymore plus he makes 4mil+ i think for this year so we may get him as a a means to salary dump
They got ARroyo too but he is returning from injury but i think he may slot in at 3b more than SS…and 2b is pretty open for the Rays… Garcia may have some good value for the Raysthrow in a trade of Betances for Wong from PAds….
and a signing MOose at 4yrs50 mil (someone thought he wouldnt get more than 3yrs 39mil like Bruce) (i say we offer the 4th year but get a reduced rate) (he end it at 34…though he would turn 34 in the September of his final year so he’d be mostly 33 in the final year)
snag a backup defense first catcher like maybe…vet like Ruiz or AJ Ellis…Rene RIvera
so we are looking at:-Fowler, Pham, Carp, Ozuna, Moose, Gyorko (2b), Yadi, DeJong, pitcher
(pretty deep and could still be mix and matched)
-Rivera, Hechavarria, JMart, Bader/ONeill
(solid defense at every backup position, all could start and wouldnt hurt us defensively, Rivera s backup catcher isnt great if Yadi goes down but the ascent of Knizner mitigates it IMO)
-CMart, ARcher, Wacha, Weaver, Mikolas…with Wainwright, Reyes, FLaherty
(good post season rotation, co-aces in ARch and Cmart…plenty of depth)
-Betances, Gregerson, Cecil, Leone, Lyons, BOwman, Tuivalala, Wainwright… Brebbia, Reyes
(much improved…concern on movable parts as Bowman is the only guy who coudl shuttle down)problem really comes from adding ARcher or another SP is Wainwright Mikolas conundrum…who gets punted from the rotation if everyone is good to go…and let’;s say Wainwright heads to the pen…who goes down to Memphis?
which is one of my reasons for trying to trade Tuivalala…he has good value and is still young…and shoudl we add a guy like BEtances..Tuivalala may be somewhat expendable as we gain high end depth…
I dunno…
thinking out loud again!
i feel like a big deal or signing is gong to happen soon…maybe not for the CArdinals but somewhere
January 24, 2018 at 11:39 am in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2017-2018 #42528GSCOTT
I was kind of thinking the same thing about offering Gyorko instead…but then i wondered who would have more value for us…. Wong is one position guy and i think he is a good one position guy…but we could replace Wong with Gyorko and not lose a ton defensive and offensive combined IMO…not to mention we have other 2b options outside Gyorko to get chances…
I think Gyorko woudl be appealing to the Yanks as well..but i think i like our team a little better with Moose at 3b and Gyorko at 2b more than Wong at 2b and MOose at 3b…
it’s a tough call though
January 24, 2018 at 11:35 am in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2017-2018 #42527Wong for Betances eh?
that is pretty intriguing…Wong is replaceable i guess, and Betances is obviously good for good value
i guess i’d do it…as i like our other 2b options and as Pads said it could coincide with a reasonable Moose contract…
very intriguing
as for Garcia vs Profar
i could care less about Profar and Garcia’s WAR…the role on the team is what is important to me…and that role is backup SS first and pinch hitter and 2b/3b backup 2nd Garcia…DeJong goes down we are put in situation where we were 2 yrs ago…scrambling for an optio nat SS and hoping to god someone can do it…because Gyorko and Garcia couldnt do it when they were given the opportunity…the team suffered defensively… yes Munoz exists, yes Mejia exists, yes Gyorko existsbut each of the last 2 years we have had our starting SS go down and gotten really lucky the guy behind him had reasons to believe in them
2014- Peralta…Descalso and Kozma both good SSs (even if DD was a surprise)
2015- Peralta…Kozma
2016- Gyorko was our opening day starting SS…Diaz gets time but then gets hurt)…Peralta (starting 3b now potential quality backup SS and hurt)…Tejada(hurt), Gyorko (poor), Garcia (poor, his hitting disappeared as a starter)…Diaz has inspiring hopeful year when we had nothing going
2017- Diaz (supposed to be good after previous good year right? but is poor) …Peralta (hurt and poor)…Garcia (poor)….DeJong saves the day2018- DeJong (good)…….Garcia?…Munoz?…Mejia?
the two years before we had a healthy Peralta and behind him filling the backup SS role was Kozma…a perfect backup SS who woudlnt hurt us when fulfilling his role
to me Garcia as he is right now, backup 2b/3b and fill in SS, is replaceable internally…Valera, Munoz, probably Schrock, even Gyorko to some ends…
Is Profar my favorite option for backup SS? nope…i’d prefer an Iglesias, or Hechevarria, or Ahmed…but i want the guy filling the role of backup SS to be a defender first and a pinch hitter second…it’s the same with backup catchers…they need to be catchers first…we dont want to get burned if our primary goes down by having someone who is so so defensively and so so offensively…to me that is what Garcia is…on team with a real backup SS and in need of a pinch hitting backup 2b and 3b sure he is great…i love him in the Descalso role…but Descalso had Kozma right there…and when we had Peralta and Kozma Garcia made more sense…
I dont see Garcia as a starting SS…and i dont see anyone else in AAA as a starting SS yet..i like Munoz but he is a big unknown…and Sosa isnt ready… our starting SSs have all went down the last three years and we were left scrambling…because we didnt have a Kozma ready to stabilize at least the defense in times of need…instead we went with a pinch hitting lefty who CAN play SS a bit over being careful about our infield defense…and the last 2 yrs we have heard complaining about defense every year and we missed the playoffs both times
I liek Garcia…i love his skills, but the one skill i want from him he just isnt that great at…and with our history of SSs going down we should expect the worst…and whiel other positions that may be tolerable we have seen what happens to this team when we dont have a good catcher or SS…
As much as Kozma didnt hit he was a rock at SS…same goes for TOny Cruz if we talk backups who were hated for the one thing they arent supposed to be there for…hitting…they are there for their glove at SS first…
when we havent had a solid defender at backup SS we have had por defense and IMO that poor defense at SS considerably affected our chances to get to the playoffs…the poor play at SS and the importance of that position may not mean the MOST when it comes to alue on the team…but in the past two years we didnt miss the playoffs by much…and that little bit of sureness may have been the missing ingredient
I want DeJong to be healthy and good…but i wanted DIaz to be healthy and good…and i wanted Peralta to be healthy and good…
Even with PEralta we had DIaz always loomming as a hopeful future…even last year DeJong’s AFL and hype was looming despite his experience there… but what do we have this year? a big unknown in Munoz who split time at AA and split time between OF and SS at both AA and AAA? Seems a good looking player but nothign even approaching the DeJong hype form last offseason
I would be willing to trade some replaceable parts from our bullpen and bench and depth to get a very good and solid defending backup SS that has some kind of stick…and if not, at this point i might prefer Mejia on the bench to Garcia…if the role that is supposed to be occupied is backup SS
awesome
January 23, 2018 at 11:49 am in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2017-2018 #42462ugh on that Darvish move….and the seemingly obvious ploy of Gimenez
I think they were always in play for Darvish, and it seemed about a month ago there were reports that a deal was done only to have it all pulled back…i think it was close if not done and they just ironed out a small thing..probably a dollar amount more than a length…IMO of course
Darvish makes the arguably small gap on paper between the Cubs and Cardinals at the moment, widen a bit too much for my taste…
which is why i keep my focus on Archer or Stroman or Fulmer…we need someone with top end rotation stuff for THIS year…not in a couple when Reyes may be there
snagging Archer or whomever from that group…gives us the rotational firepower to keep up with the Cubs IMO..without, it will depend on hoeps for advancement and health and production…one more “sure” thing for the rotation makes a Darvish signing mitigated if not dwarfed
if at the end of the season and from 2019 forward a possible rotation headed by CMart, Archer etc., Reyes…is dynamic imposing and scary… with only Reyes and CMart..that 3rd starter really has to be overproducing to be scary or imposing
All my opinions of course
January 23, 2018 at 11:40 am in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2017-2018 #42461GScott
i just dont think that is enough for Profar-GGarcia…borderline starting 2bman, but a better bench player for 2b/3b like how we use him…on the Rangers i dont see him valuing him that highly with Beltre, Andrus, Odor…and Calhoun
-Tuivalala if valued highly could be worth a lot to the right team IMO
-PLummer has some name recognition but everyone including the Rangers would see how he hasnt performed as of yet and i dont think anyone values him as more than a lottery ticket until he shows well at least for one yearGarcia is problematic for us because he is a good bench player, unfortunately he overlaps with too man other gusy we have for depth and doesnt play defense well enough at SS to feel confident about him…if a we coudl find a deal for a Profar, or Hechevarria, or Ahmed…then i think a deal to a team with 2b issues or a prospect near but not ready seems the most logical choice…even if it might end up being for a minor league arm…Garcia is very replaceable in our system as is
Yankees, Rays, Mets, SD…all seem possible destinations…
I’d say Rangers or Marlins, but i think they’d be turned off by his lack of SS defense
IMO…Yankees might be really perfect fit…as he could cheaply backup 2b and 3b while Andujar and Gleybar get ready as Wade just doesnt seem as ready for MLB as Garcia…might not get much back, but I’m sure we coudl find a reliever prospect or young corner infielderfrom the Rangers…for Profar….
how about:
Tuivalala + Ar Reyes/Gant/Mayers + DGonzalez
1 ready to go RP, 1 backend SP or long man, and 1 potential very good SP prospect or RPCardinals get another super utility who can play SS a bit better than Garcia along with saving a few 40 man spots, and the Rangers get salary relief and some solid cheap pitchers and get to move on from Profar who seems to have an issue with the organization
maybe too much…maybe too little…hard to gauge Profar and the Rangers opinion of his future
January 22, 2018 at 4:02 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2017-2018 #42413because ARcher is SUCH a bad pitcher…he is a TERRIBLE potential topic of consideration for the Cardinals…
-i mean we have shown interest in him
-he is available or at least the Rays are listening on him
-he is controllable and cheap
-he isnt old
-he has experience as a staff ace
-he wasan AS last year and once before and got Cy young votes in 2015
-he has high inning totals
-he has high strikeout total and rate
-there is still ample discussion on this forum in several threads as well as on other sites about still having interest in a starterhttps://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/archech01.shtml
I mean in what world would a trade IDEA thread have the audacity to have posts and posters which/whom posit the idea of acquiring a guy like that?
I am very interested on how he is so bad and undeserving of interest from our fanbase….win total?…useless stat… HR/9? well his ERA even with that HR rate was still under 4 (3.40) (and he has only ever been over 4 ONCE in his career and that was his second year in the bigs and it was only 4.07)…so even with some HR’s given up he finds ways to pitch 200 innings AND get over 200ks, AND still keep his ERA under 3.5… but yeah…he is worthless to consider or talk about
January 22, 2018 at 3:40 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2017-2018 #42408Yelich’s doesnt really fit right now, but is level of talent might deserve trying to find an answer to how we could make moves to make him fit
that the fish already have evaluated our team in the Stanton and Ozuna deals I think could still give us an advantage
i think dealing Grichuk to the Toronto wasa killer as I think we could have offered up FOwler for them, but maybe the Giants of ORioles might be interested in FOwler or maybe Pham depending on the return…Giants dont have much to offer but Strickland is intriguing but not enough…the Os haev plenty of reliever arms
regardless, IMO I’d prefer Realmuto taking on Ziegler with GGarcia and Tuivalala in the deal…then flipping Kelly in a deal for Archer + Hechevarria in to help the backup SS spot
Realmuto + Ziegler
for
Helsley + Tuivalala + GGarcia + JeremeyMartinezand
Archer + Hechevarria
for
Kelly + JFernandez + JMachado + MayersRealmuto could start at 1b or be a super utility with Carp and Gyorko, but he takes away the problems with a 4 man bench with his flex
Realmuto/Carp/Gyorko, Hechevarria, JMart, Bader is a pretty good bench and every player wouldnt hurt us if they were needed to startJanuary 22, 2018 at 1:21 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2017-2018 #42395if we can snag a starter…a top of rotation type
(Arrieta, Darvish, or trade for Archer)then i dont really think a closer is that big of a deal, as it basically sets up Reyes as the closer for the year, even if he doesnt start the year in the spot. And Reyes did show he can be electric out of the pen before. Also it would curtail any considerations of pushing him too hard too quickly. If the hoard of decent relievers can hold the fort in the 9th until Reyes is good and ready for it by the AS break then we could have a pretty deadly pen even without a big name closer
adding another hitter would be nice, but unless someone falls into our laps (like the discussion in the other thread about Moose at 3 yrs 40mil)….i think we would be fine.
Ozuna + full years of PT + healthy years + rebound years + more sure options on the bench i think will go a long way in making our offense better than last year….and really it wasnt all that bad save early on when it was really bad
a top end starter makes a lot of the pitching side concerns go away IMO
a bat would be nice, but isn’t required IMO…
a trade of Tuivalala/Lucas/Mayers/Gant + GGarcia for a better backup SS would be worth considering…free up a 40man spot and get a better contingency plan for SS should DeJong go the Diaz route. I liek Garcia, but we have a lot of 2b/3b types…and his SS defense and his when starting offense is not what i’d want if forced to have to play him there every day. A Pete Kozma glove would be just fine with slightly less on base skills than Garcia who is a subpar SS IMO and not produced when given starting time on offense.
I’m not sure who is out there to target, but i wonder about guy like Nick Ahmed from the DBacks…who has a great glove and still has some limited upside offensively. He would make us better defensively at SS if forced to play him every day even if we took a big potential hit to the offense using him instead of DeJong. While Garcia would make us worse defensively and offensively. A backup SS is never an AS, but having a backup who can make you better at something (even if defense) is worth more than half measures like Garcia IMO
Im not ab ig fan of Moose, but most of that comes from the pricetag associated and my worry on him stringing together healthy years and productive years…feel really streaky..
however…at 3yrs 40m… i’d definitely be interested and be willing to move players around to make it work
January 22, 2018 at 11:21 am in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2017-2018 #42387I think i may have talked about Leone once on the board here…not sure if it was this topic or not, might have been in a game thread, but maybe it was on VEB or somewhere else…i cant remember..
I still play a little Fantasy Baseball and i used him in a couple leagues for middle relief….hard to not see his good play last year
January 22, 2018 at 11:13 am in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2017-2018 #42382nice eye PAds… Miley definitely is worth consideration… his acquisition would be undoubtedly seen as a dumpster dive… but he seems like he could fit well…
my only concern with him is whether he would get in the way of younger guys destined for the pen
it’s my one concern with Tuivalala…he is out of options..which means we cant send him down…he puts us in the Socolovich conundrum like last year…we had to keep running out players who werent performing and had no wiggle room with the pen because everyone was out of options
-Greger, Leone, Lyons, Cecil, Bowman….seem locks
-Tuivalala has to be up
-Brebbia seems a lock but at least he has options, though i doubt they want to send him down (Bowman does too i guess, but i doubt he is an option for optioning)that would leave one spot open in an 8 man pen, if we give that to Miley (or any other FA for that matter) we really are backing ourselves into a corner for utilizing youngsters to complement the pen in times of need
As the 40 man is full right now…any more deals must include a trade or loss of a 40 man player, which is why i think we still have another trade before the season starts, either to make room for a FA…or as a means to clear up the 40 man
A trade for Archer combined with a FA signing (or you could add in Colome there), that deal would include several 40man folks…
IMO something like this:
Archer
for
Flaherty + Knizner + Tuivalala + Voit + DGonzlaezand sign FA RP:
-let’s say Miley, but i like Albers or maybe Watson too (but i like the idea of another guy who could do several roles)This clears 4 spots on 40man and adds 2, leaving us a little wiggle room on the 40man
It allows us to slot Reyes into the pen (or whomever misses out on the rotation) and doesnt force him into HAVING to produce
It does add an issue with the rotation…but that is a good thing. It forces fair assessments of Waino, Mikolas, and Weaver, and maybe even Wacha for who gets rotation spots
If FLaherty approaches anything close to Archer we would be happy, and it’s not like we dont have plenty behind Flaherty anyways
Knizner is mitigated by Kelly’s seemingly unstoppable storyline of being our next catcher no matter what, and we have some other nice catching prospects behind him
In this case we have a potential rotation of:
CMart, Archer, Wacha, Weaver, Wainwright/Mikolas
Mikolas/Reyes/Miley/Hudsonmuch better depth IMO
the bullpen has more flexibility and punch
and the future rotation for 2019 and beyond is young, cheap and controllable…which would allow us to spend BIG monies on position players and/or re-signing Ozuna…and the option to still deal from the rotational depth for other help and mitigate injuries-2019- CMart, Archer, Wacha, Weaver, Reyes/Mikolas

sad to see Grichuk go, but i think it gives him a chance to compete
January 19, 2018 at 4:40 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2017-2018 #42145Grichuk to the Jays for Leone and Greene…
i like Leone…had a good year last year
i still think Grichuk has potential to be a good mlb player everyday…will miss him as he was definitely a good Cardinal and represented the Cardinals well…they might need to scrap that ad of him wearing the dugout jacket now though which has been going around social media…lots of likes
Leone probably is the last bullpen move now though..and he is intriguing IMO..his projections arent great but last year he was pretty good…i followed him a bit last year and was impressed…but it is one year
dont know anything about Greene…looks like a minor league rotation guy if we convert some of the younger starters to relievers
Bader and ONeill and maybe even ADGarcia are look like they are getting every chance to provide impact if needed
solid move…not flashy but solid
EDIT… looked at GReene a little more…still young rated relatively high in the Jays organization
team front line starter
true…though that was projections…
how accurate have those been the last couple years? feel free to make your own decisions on their accuracy…but to me the trend seems to be…that it is hard to make an forecast that are accurate…so using them as proof of equality or inequality seems a stretch at best
