The Cards are a couple of degrees of launch angle from three home runs today. All three ended up as singles (Martinez was thrown out on one). Not even one extra base hit from it.
The zone is neither consistent nor a good zone when it is called. Umpiring has cost the Cards dearly today.
You just can’t leave Martinez in that long, whether the ump was bad or not. 7 walks is a bad look on anyone. He probably has come back too soon from the lat injury when he could have used a couple more rehab starts.
Carlos has struggled with his control early in the game. He’s been rusty since his return. Hopefully he can get it straightened out.
Or you could say that if the Cardinals played at their normal clip against the bad teams on the schedule so far (which is about .560 win percentage), they would be tied for the best record in the NL right now.
Sure, winning 9 straight against any team is difficult no matter the circumstances but there have been some real clunkers by this team in other series against bad teams. If they play normally against them, the overall record should improve.
The Cards may be dominating Cincy but it’s the teams with losing records that are the issue. 11-10 against >.500 clubs, 9-0 against Cincinnati and 15-17 against the rest of the sub .500 clubs. We simply must do better against the Miami and KC types to hang in the Central.
Marcell Ozuna is hitting .315/.388/.478 in the last calendar month, with more walks than strikeouts. Pretty solid, and basically what we were hoping for on the trade. The power looks to be coming around as well. As we’ve seen the last couple days, the offense looks leaps and bounds better with Carpenter and Pham setting the table and Martinez and Ozuna driving em in. Getting Dejong back to drive in runs as well would be big.
As for today, hoping for a better start from Cmart. Go Cards!!
Ozuna with the triple and then Yadi, Gyorko and Muñoz can’t drive him in. Gotta get that insurance run, guys!
I really, really hope I’m wrong but this just feels like the kind of game that the Cards jump out to a lead only to have the other team chip away bit by bit until they walk it off. It’s a gross feeling.
The popout to right ends the inning, with the score now 5-3. The Cards are gonna need to score a couple more to win, IMO.
Weaver has not been particularly efficient tonight. That’s the problem with his whole year, really. He’s probably going to be out after 5 tonight.
Gotta give him credit for the great defensive play there though.
Martinez trying to make everyone forget about his bad defense by punishing baseballs. He hits his second homer of the game, a three run shot to put the Cards up 5-1.
The Cards score a couple on homers, but now Weaver is struggling. He walked the pitcher and is facing Hamilton with men on first and second.
“Positive player overall”? Doesn’t he have to play defense?
Note that I said “with a little more power.” Right now I’d probably not put him as a positive player but if the OBP sticks and the power comes back a little that’s a 120 wRC+ player. So yes, that would be positive, even if his defense is not as good. It would be even better if he’s only facing RHP while Bader gets all the lefties and a decent amount against righties too.
Maintaining an elite rotation/offense is easier than maintaining an elite bullpen. Bullpens are volatile for a reason and I don’t think that either the Cubs or Brewers have the rotation arms at this moment to run away from the Cardinals. With an offense and bullpen that have both underachieved, St Louis is still in striking distance. If the bullpen in particular can be solved and Pham, Carp, Fowler, Ozuna, Wong, etc don’t take turns where 2 or 3 of them hit like A ball players forced to play MLB..this team could win 95 games. I think that they get 88-90 as is. Hard to say if that’s enough in the NL this year.
Since this topic was created, Dexter is hitting .277/.358/.340, for a 100 wRC+. He’s had almost no power, which makes his overall line look fairly nondescript. His walk and K rates are fine though. With a little more power, the month looks pretty solid and he would be a positive player overall. The BA and OBP play if he can sustain that the rest of the year.
I don’t see it as screwing up their careers. If they are good enough, they’ll get their shot and as we’ve seen, the backup will probably become the starter when the main starter gets injured. For now, getting both regular starts has to be the reason for these moves and that’s ok, imo.
Now, I do believe that one of the two should be up in the bigs next year as the backup to Yadi. Whether that’s Kelly or Knizer…I’m not sure, as we will have to see how the rest of the season goes.
The Reds are bad, but so were the Marlins. Hopefully the visit to Cincy is just what the doctor ordered to get the team pointing in the right direction again.
That’s fantastic for that young man. It’s too bad that the error ruined the perfect game but he won’t ever forget that. Hopefully he improves and is able to make a career from the game but it’s doubtful he’ll ever have a night like last night.
While I wouldn’t call it a good win…it’s still good to get the bleeding stopped. Hopefully they can play better in Cincinnati than they did the last couple days.
That was a really bad day. I’m gonna put it behind in my mind because there were a lot of big, bad things happening. Mikolas can hopefully get us rolling in the right direction.
Cecil has a 7.04 ERA.
I don’t know which FA contract was worse – Cecil’s or Fowler’s.
It’s interesting in that Fowler’s contract was pretty much considered a stretch to most observers (and hated by many here) but Cecil’s was pretty well loved compared to the big closer deals that were signed.
Cecil has struggled to stay healthy and has had two bad stretches to sour the feeling that he’s been a bust. Fowler was pretty decent last year and bad this year. If I had to put money on the one more likely to bounce back, it would be Fowler. Cecil might be spent. So probably Cecil is the worse deal.
