If Reyes goes on 60 day DL, and when Sherrif goes on the 60 day, does this create openings for any of these? Helsley, Hudson, Schrock, KNizer? Schrock has been struggling, so that might lessen his chances, and Knizner just started AAA, so he MIGHT be a September callup.
I would think they would want to manage the young prospects workload, and adding them to our bullpen would help that. Greene, may be called up also, but in spring training and in Springfield for the most part he has been so so. I wish Derian Gonzalez was healthy, he would have had a shot before Guilmet. But I hope they give Guilmet another chance or 2 before sending him down.
Baron cleared waivers and is headed back to Memphis, so that means Knizner is likey going back to Springfield.
This whole catching situation continues to annoy me. Sending Knizner in the wrong direction is just plain unfortunate for him. But he shouldn’t be splitting time with another catcher either. What can you do with two elite catching prospects? The organization is truly screwing up this godsend and will probably wind up wrecking the careers of two prospects or watching them succeed in another organization. Talk about 100% certified bull crap.
I don’t see it as screwing up their careers. If they are good enough, they’ll get their shot and as we’ve seen, the backup will probably become the starter when the main starter gets injured. For now, getting both regular starts has to be the reason for these moves and that’s ok, imo.
Now, I do believe that one of the two should be up in the bigs next year as the backup to Yadi. Whether that’s Kelly or Knizer…I’m not sure, as we will have to see how the rest of the season goes.
I think the next man up in the pen should be either Hudson or Helsley. Hudson’s stuff may play up as a reliever, at least for now. We could see his K rate climb in such a role, and if not, he still will get a lot of ground ball outs.
I say also that Ellis needs to be moved up to AAA relief. He seems to thrive as a reliever. Arturo Reyes and Mujica are certainly not doing well at all, and probably need to get their pink slips, or sent back to AA in Reyes case.
Is Bowman on rehab? He should be at AAA until he pitches better. Like Holland, you just can’t live on past results. Sorry, but “what have you done for me lately” applies here.
It is becoming apparent that we don’t have two elite catching prospects. Kelly was either over hyped or just not that good.
As for Bowman he has done nothing this year to deserve to be in St. Louis but I’m sure he will be because Matheny likes to use him 4 games per week.
As I have previously mentioned, baseball is a marathon not a sprint. You can reach all kinds of wrong conclusions on small samples.
Mike Schmidt only hit .196 with 137 strikeouts in 367 AB’s in his rookie seasons. But he did hit 18 home runs. Another Grichek, no not hardly.
Willie Mays hit .237 in his second season but with only 127 AB’s due to military service. He hit .274 in his rookie season.
Kelly and Knizner need to play every day. Kelly is the better defensively at this point and defense is the Holy Grail for catchers. No way we can evaluate their handling of pitchers and calling pitches. With the small sample we can not determine at this point that Kelly will not eventually hit in the major leagues. Kelly has hit pretty well in AAA. Knizner appears to hit at every level but the major leagues are a different deal.
I would not be shocked to see one of them included in a major deal. Both Jeremy Martinez and Dennis Ortega are hitting better this year and Ortega is throwing out nearly 50% of enemy base runners and has NINE pickoffs already this season. Then there are Julio Rodriguez at Peoria and Jose Godoy at Palm Beach and Ivan Herrera up from the DSL. We still have 2-3 years with Yadi, barring injury so we could be overrun with quality catchers when he gives up the role.
By the way as of this moment the 4 Cardinal domestic farm teams are leading or tied for the lead in their divisions. Collective 34 games over .500. And the Cardinal Blue team in the DSL is leading thier division.
Cardinal Blue team 4-1 and leading the Angels 7-0 in the 5th inning today. Cardinal Red team 3-2.
Does this indicate a powerful major league team; maybe so maybe not. I remember the Reds minor league teams that were awful a few years ago but seemed to have one or two elite players each year. Ended up with the Big Red Machine. What the top prospects are doing is more critical than the wins and losses.
My point is that Kelly may end up being a decent MLB player but his ranking indicates that he should be better than just average. If you are ranked as the second or third best player in your system you should have a better than .150 average over 118 AB’s.
I’m sure during the 150 years of professional baseball you will find some stars that got off to slow starts. We can all cherry pick stats to support our argument.
Kelly has never shown that he should be expected to be more than an average hitter at the major league level. I am just saying that even 118 AB’s is a small sample to risk losing a possible all-star catcher. Good defensive catchers don’t come around that often.
Does anyone have a list of the major latins picked up with the big expenditure? I had one and can’t find it. Wanted to compare the top signees to the rosters of the DSL clubs. Several names seem familiar.

Ny, I suggest holding off getting worked up over Knizner being sent down. It could happen, but it hasn’t yet.
I posted my thoughts on the Memphis catching situation on the New Starting Catcher thread the other day.
I don`t understand people wanting to rip on Carson Kelly.He has barely had any continued playing time in the Majors (2 weeks last season?).Knizner looks like he can hit but defense?Fans here constantly bitch about Cards poor defense and then continue to rip the solid defensive prospect (Kelly0 because he is not hitting in rare playing time.
Okay, so our two highly ranked catchers will both be getting plenty of playing time with Knizner going down to Springfield. Maybe its best for the organization because their values will remain intact. Kelly needs to start showing signs of the offense that kept him moving up in the system. Last night was a good start.
I have a very strong feeling that management will screw up having two extra good catching prospects…. a rarity these days in pro baseball. Likely we’ll wind up with two discouraged players hoping to get a chance outside of the organization and when Molina decides to retire we’ll need to go out and acquire someone else to replace him. Very bad situational management by the FO.
I’ve lost a lot of faith in how this team is run. Extremely poor and untimely signings!!!!!!
