NJ315 in the house….sweet!
With 1 out Happ doubles(down the right field line) in Heyward and the Redbird lead had been sliced in half.
Oh Oh! Heyward coaxed the leadoff walk from Mikolas. I know the percentage is nowhere near this high, but doesn’t it seem like 85% of leadoff walks evolve into runs?
Mr. July at the dish with a runner at 2nd with 2 outs…and the cubbies are pitching to him believe it or not…lets stay with the action shall we….2-2 count on Carpenter…Quintana just misses the k on one just off the outside corner….strikes Carpenter out on a fastball right in Carp’s wheelhouse to retire the side. 2-0 Good Guys.
Munoz drives in Fowler with a ringing double to left!! This kid is going to be a nice little player!
Very good comparison, Stlcard25! You know what one of this world’s greatest tragedies is? You and me not being able to call a Cardinals game live together.
I just saw Theo drooling up in the owners booth. It doesn’t take a mind reader to know that he’ll be first in line to wave big bucks in front of Mikolas’ nose when he’s ready for free agency. Talk about killing 2 birds with one stone if he succeeds…. you stick it to your arch rivals plus you get one whale of a starting pitcher. As things presently exist, Mikolas’ stock has to be higher than Carlos Martinez’s. We move along to the top of the 4th in a 1-0 Cardinal ballgame.
Might help Ozuna’s hitting if he would lose that treasure chest of gold necklaces flopping around his neck when he swings.
Schwarber succumbs to an inning ending Mikolas offering….thats 4 K’s thru 2 frames for the big guy.
Happ whiffs into the 1-2-4 twin killing….mikey likey!
This one run may hold up with this ump’s strike zone interpretation.
Mikey Mikey! Miko fans Rizzo & Bryant, then induces the inning ending grounder to 2nd to tie a ML record set by many a hurler….the coveted 1-2-3 inning.
Censored to conform with community standards
The 1 run is all we tally in the 1st……. Thanks to the cubs CS ( that’s “Carpenter Shift” to the layman ) .
Yadi then promptly drills a GR (That’s ground rule to the layman) double to left and the Birds are in business. Now 1-0 Cards on the sac fly to center.
Sweet! Now that’s winning baseball…compliments of the game’s newest premier power hitter!
Had a bad thought in between games of this twin-bill. What if our battling Birds were to outscore our arch rivals in this 5 game series…… yet still only come away with one victory? So I posed the question “Has a team ever lost 4 out of 5 games in a series, yet still somehow scored more runs than their opponent” to our good friend Kip over at the esteemed and prestigious Elias Sports Bureau. I’m still awaiting The Kipster’s response, but my guess is that this unlikely event has never occured. And for those of you in Rio Linda, I can tell you, without an assist from The Elias Sports Bureau, that a team that was swept in a 5 game series has NEVER outscored their opponent.
Most managers today do not have the cajonas to sit players that should be sat…..hence, the wimplification of the game.
I was using 2.00 as The Gibson Line and not that unbelievable 1.12 year, Brian. Those are the two numbers that I associate most with baseball…..1.12 for Gibby and 56 for Joe D’s consecutive game hit streak. When I was a kid and was asked what my favorite number was, I always responded “112” in honor of Gibby’s 1.12 era feat. As we all know, Bob Gibson was no slouch with a bat in his hands too. He hit 4 times the number of career home runs than his long time SS Dal Maxvill amassed and hit only 4 fewer career dingers than The Wizard walloped. Truly amazing that 64 HoF voters neglected to list Gibby’s name on their ballots, Brian. That one act alone should have immediately resulted in all 64 of those clowns being permanently banned from ever having the right to vote again. If you think about it, most of those 64 had to have been cub fans as no sane knowledgeable person could have left Gibby off that elite list. Great call with bringing Greg Maddux into this conversation, Forschster! Greg was a great one indeed, but not quite at Gibby’s status. I think what separated the two was Gibby’s amazing post season heroics. I vividly recall my joy with the news that Greg Maddux was leaving the windy city for Atlanta….talk about Christmas come early! You just know that the cubbies would have won a world series during that era if he had remained a cub his entire career.
We would be terribly remiss not to note Alexander Fagalde’s ERA (1.93) dipping below The Gibson Line with last night’s handcuffment of Lansing. Fagalde totally stiffled the potent Lansing offense, yielding just 5 hits and no runs in 6 innings of quality labor. 4-2 Chiefs your “cool” final from Cooley Law School Stadium, where 3,566 frazzled fans exited the turnstiles scratching their heads, all mumbling the words “who is this Fagalde fellow”????
Sweet game to go see, Cardinal25!! I always like to ask game goers what goodies they consume at the ol’ ballpark, as I think it says a lot as to what kind of a person they are. For instance, my wife, who is 14 years my junior, loves cream puffs……and that reflects perfectly as to the sweet pretty easy going lady that she is. Me? Up until two years ago, Miller Park had this concession booth where you could get cotton candy, but now they no longer sell it. So now I stash a couple nice big ones (but it’s not the same because it gets all matted down) in my wife’s purse before heading out to the game. Trust me when I say there’s not a more delicious treat than while watching a Cards game, to have a brewski in one hand and a big batch of cotton candy in the other. It may not sound like a good combo, but it truly is. You take a big chomp of cotton candy and then a nice swig of beer and then let the two mingle around in your mouth together for about 20 seconds…..amazingly tangy and surprisingly delightful.
Your unadulterated vote of confidence will have me riding a mile high in our PBP saddle, Brian & Forschster. One rousing game thread and Cranny may just forget all about our dearly departed skipper. Concerning MM…… I’m wondering what his next career move will be. He’s too young to retire. Will another team hire him as their manager this coming off season? Does he accept a less distinguished role if no managerial offers materialize? You watch, if nothing palatable comes his way, Theo will coax him into working with the cubbies in some capacity.
Change can be good. Even though we are fielding the same cast of characters, I already feel better about our squad. I think to the point where I just may no longer be a stranger to our heralded game threads…..lucky you.
I really thought MM was leaving a couple weeks ago. I hate to see any person lose their job, but sometimes these moves are necessary. Fortunately in MM’s case, he’ll financially weather this storm with ease. I would like to take a brief moment to recognize all of the thousands of men and women in this country who will lose their jobs this month for one reason or another, but will not have the luxury of taking it all in stride financially. Especially those with young children who will now be unsure if they will be able to keep their homes or properly feed and clothe their kids as a result of losing their job. Granted, the economy is presently in fantastic shape, but still many will suffer. May they all keep their chins up and find the strength to get right back in there and find new prosperous employment!
Wong has had more opportunities than Storm Davis & Stormy Daniels combined.
