In all fairness, Holland would have gotten out of the inning had DeJong fielded the double play grounder cleanly.
Carpenter’s home run (sixth straight game) pulls the Cards to 3-2.
While I like DeJong and think he plays a pretty good SS, I want an elite SS. DeJong could play any infield position most likely 3B.
The error by Dejong was a killer but couldn’t a seasoned closer dig deep and get out of it? I mean that walk was on four not even close pitches.
Muñoz gets the tying hit in the 8th. Score 3-3 going to the bottom of the 8th with Tui in. Carp will lead off the 9th.
DeJong plates lead run in T9th. Bases loaded double for two more runs from Pham. 6-3 lead against Steve Cishek. Two in scoring position with one out and a pitching change.
Fowler and Muñoz both K to strand runners on 2nd and 3rd. Hope that doesn’t come back to haunt. Norris in for the save.
No sweat for Norris. Gave up a lead off hit to Heward, but then got a pop out and DP. Cards win 6-3 to even the series.

Had a bad thought in between games of this twin-bill. What if our battling Birds were to outscore our arch rivals in this 5 game series…… yet still only come away with one victory? So I posed the question “Has a team ever lost 4 out of 5 games in a series, yet still somehow scored more runs than their opponent” to our good friend Kip over at the esteemed and prestigious Elias Sports Bureau. I’m still awaiting The Kipster’s response, but my guess is that this unlikely event has never occured. And for those of you in Rio Linda, I can tell you, without an assist from The Elias Sports Bureau, that a team that was swept in a 5 game series has NEVER outscored their opponent.
Be better if they win tomorrow. However I’d take 2 games in a 5 game set as a build on.
I don’t think 2 of 5 is enough. If this was May, then yeah you might be okay with that. But coming in 7 1/2 down and leaving 8 1/2 is not good in late July.
The third game is pretty big. Need to grab a game in the standings, and build some confidence that you can compete. But of course you need to keep that going. The Rockies are coming in, and they are on a roll of late and playing very good baseball. If St. Louis wins on Sunday, it will be two teams with some positive momentum going at it.

Interesting thought, Pugs. I wonder if that has ever happened? It brings to mind one of the more unusual teams in baseball history, the 1984 New York Mets. That team won 90 games, yet they gave up more runs than they scored during the season. I perused their game log and did not see any long series where they were outscored, yet won more than they lost. But they had some 2 and 3 games series where that happened.
Another unusual team was the 1966 Yankees. They finished dead last in the AL, winning 70 and losing 89, yet only gave up one more run than they scored. I did see a four-game series they played against the Angels where they outscored the Halos 24-21, yet lost 3 of 4.
I agree, bikemike. The Cards badly need a series win, but the way Sunday’s game is played also has significance, IMO. If they lose 10-1 with more sloppy defense, that says a lot more (negatively) than a well-played 2-1 loss. We already know the offense is still hit and miss. They really need Mikolas to pitch like an ace after a disappointing outing before the break.
