To your point, BHC, to me, Martinez has not looked right ever since he came off the DL. I wonder if we will hear later he was pitching hurt.
July 19, 2018 at 8:27 pm #60952wagee12
ParticipantTime to move Martinez while contenders are searching for starting pitching. He will NEVER be an ace of a staff. BTW, velocity seems down considerably too. Head case, can’t pitch around an error. He needs to go now.
July 19, 2018 at 8:29 pm #60953Brian, I’ve been saying that as well.
July 19, 2018 at 8:35 pm #60954bccran
ParticipantMaybe they can will play tighter baseball now.
July 19, 2018 at 8:50 pm #60955bccran
ParticipantThey were plagued by errors, walks, and base running gaffes before.
July 19, 2018 at 8:50 pm #60956Leadership says they have built a playoff capable roster. My concern is that you just cannot keep making so many defensive mistakes nightbafter night if you are expecting to make the playoffs. Strong defense was a key element of winning teams in the 60’s, 80’s and over the past twenty years. I just can’t figure our why why this team struggles so much.
July 19, 2018 at 9:16 pm #60960
stlcard25ParticipantSloppy start to the second half so far. This one is there for the taking. 13 hits have not translated into enough runs.
Bowmam in…blech. Another run in.
July 19, 2018 at 9:26 pm #60963So Jose MArtinez wasn’t all the problems with the defense.
Is there any reason why you don’t send down Bowman after this?
Be prepared to be under .500 after this series. It all begins with the star power in the lineup and ends with the bullpen. Danny Mac will be rethinking his “this team has too much talent” homer tweet he sent out after the Matheny firing.
July 19, 2018 at 9:40 pm #60966
stlcard25Participant9-6 is the final. Way too many hits to not get the win. They’ve got to tidy up the defense and figure out a way to get rid of Bowman and probably Lyons.
July 19, 2018 at 9:40 pm #60967Now 48-47, the Cards fall to the Cubs 9-6 in Game 1 of the 5-game series. St. Louis is a season-worst 8.5 games back.
July 19, 2018 at 9:46 pm #60968Same old ugly baseball. Hard to watch. It seems like the Cards have been especially bad under the national spotlight the last year or two. The ESPN crew wasn’t holding back in calling out the lack of fundamentals during much of the game.
booyah and stlcard, no doubt on on Bowman. His time is beyond expiration.
July 19, 2018 at 9:52 pm #60969I don’t see why Lyons should be lumped in with bowman
He gave up a hit and a dumb stolen base which gave up the run on the following hit. But he buckled down and got he pick off and two strikeouts
Tuivalala looked unstable but batted back and did great to get out of his inning too. The announcers didn’t even Gar him an attaboy for it either after they spent the whole half inning talking about how amazing that hit and run was
Bowman however. yikes. Very bad. Option him and maybe even try to pass him through waivers. I do t know if it’s his fingers or whatever but he’s just not good this year at all.
Had the defense shown up. And bowman been able to get a zero we would have been ahead or tied
For all the negatives we were still right there.
With how Cecil has played the last month and hopefully the return of Greger and Lyons being at least serviceable the pen could get better if we could just shore up the roles a little and maybe add one quality piece or get one returning injury guy to be good or find a kid ready to contribute at a high level
I’m a bit worried about Dejong though. Second really bad game for him defensively since coming back. And his bat hasnt been too exciting either.
He gets a little slack. But Shildt saying he wants stability at the front 3 and him at the 3bspot I worry he may be backing himself into a corner if driving doesn’t shape up on the defensive side. Munoz has played well enough all around to warrant starts at SS if these bad games continue.
July 20, 2018 at 12:41 am #60975Lyons might just be having a bad year and injuries have snowballed it. IDK but he’s been a guy who’s been suggested as a fringe starter on some bad teams, a loogy, a premium lefty out of the pen but most of his career as a guys who has some tools but has been a career minor league guy who only got a shot because of a good spring and out of options.
Munoz is not the full time answer at SS. His defense at that psotion while able to make some plays is shakey. DeJong was playing solid at SS but I think he’s got some rust and the break didn’t help him. I do like the OF of Munoz-CF, Bader-RF and Martinez in LF over any of the garbage out there. Too they won’t take the trash out or can’t trade one of them.
Were not good and they’ll likely hold on to the guys we’ve got minus a bullpen guy like Norris. We’re stuck on stuck with Contracts, broke arm OF’ers who hit singles. Maybe they can move Pham if he warms a bit.

ParticipantShildt made all the wrong moves last night. Cost us a win.

stlcard25ParticipantShildt made all the wrong moves last night. Cost us a win.
I somewhat agree. Matheny probably would have pitched both Hicks and Norris, and might have won the game.
The difference is we’d probably lose the next four. Maybe we will anyway I guess.
July 20, 2018 at 8:24 am #60986bccran
ParticipantJust had to kid a little, 25.
The manager isn’t between the lines. That’s been my contention anyway IMHO.July 20, 2018 at 8:25 am #60987Shildt made all the wrong moves last night. Cost us a win.
Admittedly, I did not watch last night’s game, but would you have EVER said the same thing about Matheny? I feel like I’m watching Sean Hannity gush about Trump.
Anyway, the Cardinals committed 3 errors last night. Errors cost a team an average of 0.7 runs per error. By statistical averages, that means the Cardinals gave the Cubs 2.1 runs last night, and they lost by three. Add in the compounding effect when pitchers lose faith in their defense AND have to make tons of extra pitches…
July 20, 2018 at 8:34 am #60988bccran
ParticipantMy contention all along, 2016, has been that you play the Cards you’re dealt. You have guys like Martinez who can play offense but not defense. And guys like Wong that can play defense but not offense. You have guys like Fowler who isn’t playing either. And a supposed ace who’s all over the map. Any manager would have a hard time with it.
July 20, 2018 at 9:09 am #60993
stlcard25ParticipantAnd guys like Wong that can play defense but not offense.
I should note here that since he was given the chance to be the full time 2B in mid June, Kolten has a .805 OPS. It’s at .901 in July. I haven’t put him into the “no offense” category yet, given his recovery from that terrible start and solid season with the bat last year. If the offense didn’t have guys like Fowler and Pham hitting horridly, Kolten would be a great guy to have on the team as a #7-8 hitter and good defender.
July 20, 2018 at 9:13 am #60998Most managers today do not have the cajonas to sit players that should be sat…..hence, the wimplification of the game.
July 20, 2018 at 9:13 am #6099914NyquisT
Participant.
July 20, 2018 at 9:15 am #61001DeJong needs playing time to get back in form.Fowler needs a ticket out of town.Pham gets 3 hits and then proceeds to show that he is the worlds dumbest baserunner and raggy ass arm on defense.Carlos shows again that 10 cent brain and inability to rise above errors and the mental toughness of a hamster to fold like a cheap tent. You have to like his talent but where the hell is his head in the ballgames? This is a team with a jeckyl/Hyde personality………world beaters for a few games then the 62 Mets for a few games.
July 20, 2018 at 9:23 am #61003Bw52 and bccran,
I pretty much agree with what you guys are saying. This is the 4th year of Martinez as a starter and I keep hearing how much potential he has. Well…..WHERE THE HECK IS IT????????
All I see is a goofball.
And speaking of goofballs, we have two on the team. And they are both named Martinez. Jose Martinez goofiness has already wore thin on me to the point where he needs to go. Now if he was hitting .330 I could tolerate him. But geez, he cant even catch the dang ball!!!

stlcard25ParticipantI find it interesting that Martinez is called a “goofball” or “mentally weak” but Weaver and Flaherty walk off the mound screaming/cursing into their gloves (a la Chris Carpenter) and it’s seen as a sign of toughness.
July 20, 2018 at 9:36 am #61008
stlcard25ParticipantI also find it interesting that the errors last night were by Dejong and Gyorko but the majority of complaints in this thread are about Pham and Ozuna’s defense.
