Marlins just walked of a win against the Cubs in the bottom of the 9th.
I could support electronic checked swing easier than I would support automatic balls and strikes. Checked swing, to me, is more along the lines of checking to determine if the runner was out stealing or out running the bases. Automatic balls and strikes effectively take the plate umpire out of the game entirely. The plate umpire does not only call balls and strikes. He keeps the players in line and respectful and disciplined, and he keeps them from getting the ‘big head’, especially the new ones who have not yet learned who’s who, and where they, personally, fit into the overall scheme of things. In essence, the umpires are part of the game. On the other hand, there should be a better process in place for evaluating plate umpires so that MLB can deal with them, appropriately, but not violently.
Goldschmidt has definitely become energized at the age of 37.
One thing that stands out in TCN ranking is that the Cardinals organization overall is completely devoid of a power hitting corner outfielder. Almost makes me want to take Jace LaViolette in the Draft, although the potential for gaining another so called ‘hitter’ that strikes out half of the time is alarming.
He’s just 3 months past the age of 18. He might grow an inch or two in the coming years. No idea what his arm is like or if he could play in the outfield. Exciting to see s kid rake at any level even if it’s only the FSL.
Thanks.
Yeah. I’m glad TCN didn’t choose to print the rest of this guy’s ….? BTW, I am 100% supportive pf keeping things civil around here, although if someone blows his stack once in a while, I get it. That’s just human action/reaction. But I get annoyed and start to feel alienated when I have to constantly look at adolescent gibberish somehow trying to present itself as dialogue.
It seems like the only way betting can influence a game is if a manager is trying to lose. I just don’t have it in me to believe that Rose deliberately tried to lose a game. As far as players are concerned, it would take at least half of the team conspiring to lose a game because of a bet. That might have happened before the 1919 World Series scandal, but not since.
BTW, the report that I read said that $5000 in 1919 amounts to $91,000 in today’s money.
Very comprehensive and informative piece for the May 14, Minor League Notebook. Thank you, Marilyn.
FWIW, it is on Henderson’s Player Page here at The Cardinal Nation. Go to Rosters>Springfield or enter his name in the blue magnifying glass area at the upper right.
Thanks. I do know that TCN typically explains the pronunciation of the name of a player with an unusual, or unfamiliar name. I did look, first, at TCN roster matrix, but I did know about the blue magnifying glass. I know it’s way too early to talk about it, but I’m already looking forward to what the TCN 2026 Prospect Guide has to say about him compared to what they had to say about him in the 2025 Guide.
Re: May 13, Minor League Notebook by Michael Goff
For anybody, besides mudville, who was wondering how to pronounce
‘Ixan’, as in Ixan Henderson, here it is:I’d just as soon take my chances on a pitcher with high upside, rather than an outfielder that has trouble putting the bat on the ball like Gorman and Walker. Maybe try for a hitter again in the 2026 draft.
Regarding trading Helsley, I think most would agree that it depends on where the Cardinals are in the standings at the trade deadline. There’s also the outside possibility that the Cardinals might try to extend Helsley after the end of the season. Seems highly unlikely, but you can’t rule it out. The Cardinals do not have a replacement for Helsley lined up and we all know what it feels like to lose a game after going into the 9th with a lead.
Thanks for posting, Rat. Glad to hear it. Too bad Rose was so stubborn about the gambling thing he did. Given that, I don’t think it would have been good look for MLB for Rose to be admitted to the HOF. However, I don’t doubt that he will be admitted posthumously, and I’ll be thrilled when it happens. In my mind Rose and Bench were two of the best baseball players of all time.
Shoeless Joe Jackson is another matter. He got banned because of his association with the 1919 Black Sox scandal where Chicago deliberately threw the 1919 World series for today’s equivalent of $91,000 each (according to Wikipedia). However, Shoeless Joe ‘had led both teams in several statistical categories and set a World Series record with 12 base hits’ which suggests that he did not participate in the scandal. But, then, ‘It was alleged that Jackson admitted to participating in the fix during grand jury testimony on September 28, 1920.'(Wikipedia) Admission of participation in the conspiracy pretty much ends the argument in my mind.
The problem with a young pitcher like McGreevey is that sometimes they get ‘figured out’ by the opposing teams. Then they start getting banged around over and over again. I’m okay with just letting the organization handle a kid like this in the way they think is best.
Regarding Liberatore…I thought they should have let him stay in the bullpen. Now it’s starting to look like he could be a rotation piece for years to come.
I really agree with ATM’s post about Gorman. He kind of reminds me of Jack Flahrerty, all promise but an unreachable ceiling except that Flaherty is a certified head case, IMO. The Cardinals’ organization just put up with him too long. Gorman sure has a nice looking power swing and he’s still young, so there’s still hope. As a fan, I want to win and I feel like Donovan gives us a better chance of winning than Gorman who looks like he’s already beat when he’s in a two strike count. Maybe he’ll grow out of it’ eventually but for the time being those strikeouts are painful to watch.
April 28, 2025 at 4:24 pm in reply to: St. Louis 2025 Game #29 thread – Monday, April 28 at Cincinnati Reds #280592We need to come up with some new profane words. The words that used to be considered profane, and generally avoided in mixed company, are now spoken widely and openly throughout most of the media outlets, TCN being one of the exceptions. On the other hand, it might eventually come full circle, and profanity will, once again, be confined to locker rooms and privately held conversations.
April 28, 2025 at 4:09 pm in reply to: Trade Ideas/Acquisition Ideas/Non-Cards Rumors – 2024-2026 #280589I could maybe see trading Helsley for a high ceiling, lower level prospect, or two (A+ or AA). But, if no other team is up for doing that, then keep Helsley and let the fans enjoy the saves that he’s going to bring.
What in the world is going on with Carson Kelly?
I’m going to guess that he just finally found his mojo. It’s nice to know that steroids have nothing to do with his resurgence since MLB completely banned steroids and has taken all the necessary steps to insure that players who still use them, like Jurickson Profar and Fernando Tatis, always get caught.
Regarding Goldschmidt, I’m guessing that he just went back to whatever he was doing that brought him his MVP season in 2022 at age 34.
He certainly has the motivation to work extra hard since this is his last chance to get a ring.April 7, 2025 at 8:44 pm in reply to: St. Louis 2025 Game #10 thread – Monday, April 7 at Pittsburgh Pirates #278975I didn’t start watching until the 4th, but Liberatore actually pitched really good while I was watching.
My bartender told me that what ATM said proves my point that Liberatore should stay in the bullpen. He’s also going to help me write a letter to the Cardinals demanding payment for services rendered. What a happy day for my grandchildren! They’re going to be rich.
April 7, 2025 at 6:48 pm in reply to: St. Louis 2025 Game #10 thread – Monday, April 7 at Pittsburgh Pirates #278939I’ve been saying for three years that Liberatore should stay in the bullpen, but nobody on the field or in the front office would listen to me. And what’s worse is that I made my recommendation with no expectation of compensation. I feel completely misunderstood and unappreciated. First chance I get, I’m going to have a good, long talk with my bartender about this.
For those who may not have ever pulled a hamstring,,,, I’ve only had it happen a couple of times, but when it does, it hurts so bad that you cannot use your leg for much of anything until the hamstring is healed.
Thankfully, it’s a ‘strain’, and not a ‘pulled’ hamstring. Rest and work with trainers will get Gorman all fixed up, hopefully within the ten days of his IL stint.April 1, 2025 at 6:09 pm in reply to: St. Louis 2025 Game #5 thread – vs. Angels, Tuesday, April 1 #278553If Arenado hadn’t mishandled that ball when he tried to throw it in the 10th, this game would have gone on for another inning at least. Sometimes stuff just happens.
Tonight he needs to hit at least one HR and one extra base hit, plus be start at least two double plays in order to make up for it.
March 29, 2025 at 9:31 pm in reply to: St. Louis 2025 Game #2 thread – vs. Twins, Saturday, March 29 #278306Scott II had two pitches that were a foot out of the strike zone called strikes, or he may have had another hit….maybe. But He did look good at the plate. Love watching Siani play centerfield.
March 29, 2025 at 2:33 pm in reply to: St. Louis 2025 Game #2 thread – vs. Twins, Saturday, March 29 #278269Fedde is averaging about 12 pitches an inning.
