From Jeff Jones – Belleville News Democrat

It is difficult to understand why they wouldn’t be motivated to move some of those players, or why it would take being more than blown away to find that motivation. The Cardinals have constructed a redundant roster with not enough openings, and with Nolan Arenado’s performance and trade value seemingly continuing to sink into the morass, that situation is getting worse, not better.

“These things tend to work themselves out over time,” Mozeliak opined. “You might say to me, ‘Well no, they haven’t,’ but they typically do, and so, patience.”

    Well no, they haven’t.

    Sounds about right.

It is difficult to understand why they wouldn’t be motivated to move some of those players,

Jeff Jones suffers from the same delusion everybody else in the Cardinals orbit suffers from, namely imagining that players are worth more than 29 other orgs thinks they are worth. Its not difficult to understand why the players in question didn’t move. Mo figured out he wasn’t going to get anything worthwhile for them. Nobody is going to blow him away for somebody like Noot, who doesn’t have the bat to be an everyday starting corner outfielder for a good team and has durability issues, of for a 1B/DH who is neither a power hitter nor an RBI machine, or for a 2B who has not established that he can hit ML pitching, and certainly not for a backup quality catcher who cannot catch especially well and can’t hit at all. There is nothing of significance to be gained by trading because there is no surplus of quality anywhere to trade from. This is where you are when the organization has been driven into the ground for 10 years, which I have been relentlessly harping on the whole time, to no avail. I mean, people still pretend like Roby is a top prospect who will be in the rotation someday. Good grief, snap out of it.

FWIW – There are more YouTube videos about my Blaze Jordan. Just search ‘Blaze Jordan’ on YouTube. I don’t think anything is said there that isn’t in line with what TCN community has already been saying. Jordan does seem to be a legitimate prospect. But it’s still very much ‘wait snd see’ on him. He’s still only 22 years old and at AAA which makes him sound hopeful.

However, according to a recent report from Andy Martino of SNY, the Yankees were interested in trading for Helsley. Martino noted that the Yankees attempted to trade for the right-hander, but the Cardinals were looking for Spencer Jones, Ben Rice, or Jasson Dominguez.

    Cardinals-Yankees Trade Talks for Helsley

If the Cardinals wanted Spencer Jones or Jasson Dominguez, they were going to have to offer a lot more than two months of Ryan Helsley…

I suggest reading Jones’ quote again. He essentially said he doesn’t see why the Cards didn’t lower their asking price in order to move the redundant players. When said like that, who disagrees?

I guess it would depend how low the asking price had to get. But I do agree that Burleson is at least a redundant piece and he’s probably at his peak. That’s why I wanted to move him. I would have listened to offers on Herrera as well simply because I think he’s hit better than he likely will in the future. Both are good hitters and we need offense, but neither are playable in the field except at 1B and Contreras is there through’27. So we either have to shoehorn them into a position they aren’t suited for or put them at DH. One is fine but two guys like that is too much. I would have thought we could have gotten a decent piece for one. I guess we will see what Chaim does in the offseason.

I think its time to have the talk with NA that his starting time is going to be diminished, thereby his playing time is going bye bye.

Burleson is a good enough platoon bat vs RHP he should be movable. I think he will be moved this winter once Mo steps down. Its no huge disaster that he didn’t get traded at the deadline.

I think jones is right on the barrel. No one is saying those guys are worth a lot in return. You only hang onto guys in this situation if you think they may improve enough to either keep or get better returns. Some of those guys, i doubt thats the case, they will eventually lose them for nothing. The cardinals arent winning right now and next year regardless, so rolling the dice and bringing in new people is the way to go. The cardinals front office is just a joke. They cant even get giving up right. You have to be pretty sad to do that.

Burleson should not be traded. What is wrong with you?

BW, can the Cardinals get another Top 10 pick for 2026? My understanding of the Draft is they can’t get lottery picks in consecutive years, so Top 6 picks. They only got 7th in 2024 and got 5th in 2025, so would they still be eligible for 2026?

I haven’t yet investigated thoroughly, but the conclusion of the posters here is that the answer is “no”. No top 10 in 2026. Others please chime in.

If a team is a non-revenue (welfare) recipient, they are ineligible to be in the lottery in consecutive years. If a team is ineligible to pick in the lottery, they can pick no higher than #10. There are four teams that are ineligible for the lottery next year, including the Cardinals, Rockies and Angels.

They can pick at #10, the rule is no higher than #10. But the Rockies seem to have that 10th spot locked.

Teams that receive revenue-sharing payouts can’t receive a lottery pick for more than two years in a row and those that don’t can’t get a top-six choice in consecutive Drafts. Furthermore, a club that’s ineligible for the lottery can’t select higher than 10th overall.

**While league officials have not yet commented, Forbes is reporting both the Los Angeles Angels and St. Louis Cardinals are Revenue Sharing Payors. Thus, they would be ineligible for a top-nine pick in the 2026 MLB Draft.

I will add one last thought – IF the Cardinals were to become revenue recipients due to their decline in revenues in 2025, they may become eligible for the draft lottery in 2026.

I believe their ticket sales will have to decline to the 1.8 million range to become eligible, and they are currently on pace for 2.3 million fans. So, it does not look like they will become eligible for 2026.

Wow, between this draft rule and regional broadcasting rights idiocy, MLB has to be the clown show of all the major sports leagues in America.

Where MLB became a laughing stock was when they allowed major market clubs like the former (Oakland) Athletics, Tampa Rays and Miami Marlins to become welfare recipients while declaring the small-market Cardinals ineligible for compensatory picks because they were successful at running a business.

MLB wanted the Cardinals to behave like a small market club, and DeWitt has $70 million reasons to give them what they want.

The players that were moved on Thursday are still scurrying to get to their new “homes” and already there are predictions about who will be gone in the off-season and to what team in some cases. Trades, FA signings and releases will be forecasted for the next two months as baseball in STL plays out ’25. There are already stories about nearly all of the present roster players who will wind up playing ’26 elsewhere. Just the headlines alone are enough to make you scratch your head and realize there very little else to talk about here. Who can read that stuff?

MLB is going to want the A’s to be good when they move to Las Vegas. I expect things like draft position to ‘go their way’.

    Bet that.
