I don’t see anything in the numbers that overwhelms me. Baez has not had an OPS over .800. Dohm is a little more interesting but doesn’t overwhelm me. Don’t know why they would even want Elissalt.
What would we get if anything in next year’s draft if we had kept Helsley and made him an offer after the season closed.
Baez is young right handed and has some power potential. This is what you get for a rental having a down season. Baez story isnt written yet. A3

The strong likelihood we would be paying $22 million next year for hopefully 70 innings of relief.
But it’s possible we’d have gotten a compensation pick at the end of round 2 similar to our competitive balance pick this year.
Nothing real exciting but seems reasonable return for a Helsley rental.
Some guys just want to hate on Mo no matter what. Anyone paying attention knows it’s past time for him to go. No need to rub it in. If this works out it’s a Bloom move. If it doesn’t it Mo.
IMO this Helsley trade is done for the same reasons this FO does almost everything it does, to save money! My guess is none of these three will ever play mlb for any team, but we won’t have to worry about signing Helsley to long time closer money so we saved money which is all that matters!
FWIW – Kareem is really high on Elissalt saying he’s slot him as the Cards 13-16th best prospect. That seems high to me, but I only know the stats and can read what people are saying. Kareem is an in-depth baseball junkie though and his words have some weight with me.
Are those players from the Mets #8 and #14 for the Mets?

There could be a huge difference here.
If they are #8 and #14 for the Mets we got basically nothing for Helsley. Players that won’t ever amount to a hill of beans. Nice job Mo.
Rats, #8 and 14 for the Mets. They are slotted in at #6 and #15 for the Cards already.

I included takes from multiple others. Keith Law doesn’t like the deal, with pros and cons for each one of the three, but you have to be a subscriber The Athletic to read.
KCB only about 10% of minor leaguers traded at the trade deadline ever become regular mlb players! You can look it up! It’s easy to find! The percentage is even worse for us, so tbey have less than 10% chance of ever really playing! Which means they have a 90% chance of not contributing! So write there names down and let’s see! I hope they all three become stars and lead us to several WS victories but ain’t likely!
I’m seeing some positive assessments of this trade but I just don’t like it. Seems we’ve given up one of our few genuine assets for a bunch of maybes somewhere down the dusty road. But I’m not a good judge of the deep minor leagues and perhaps these guys are real hidden gens.
Cardinals grade: A-
The St. Louis Cardinals were 8-15 in July entering Wednesday, no doubt changing their thinking from playoff contender to playoff pretender and leading to this trade. Baez is the headline prospect, No. 5 on Kiley McDaniel’s list of the top 10 prospects in a deep Mets system. The 20-year-old has played all over the infield — he’s probably headed to third base in the long run — and is hitting .244/.334/.406 in High-A.
He has plus bat speed and some high-end exit velocity readings, and despite being young for his league, he has kept his strikeout rate in check at just 16%. Though the numbers don’t necessarily jump out, his .740 OPS is well above the South Atlantic League average of .672. He’s hardly a sure thing, but the upside here makes Baez a nice return for a reliever with an expiring contract.
Dohm is the better of the two pitching prospects, a third-round pick last year out of Mississippi State who has a 2.87 ERA as a starter across two levels of A-ball. He has been handled carefully after his junior season in college was cut short because of a forearm strain, but he’s a fastball-heavy pitcher with a good slider. He was up to 99 mph as a reliever for the Bulldogs, so that could be his ultimate destination.
Pretty difficult to evaluate A ball players, but if you look at the draft from a few weeks ago and this trade there seems to be a pattern of what they are looking for:
Plate discipline and exit velocity are part of the formula it seems on hitters
And velocity for pitchers
After looking into the guys they traded for, I think my assessment is it is an okay return. There are definitely things to like in each guy and each is more of an upside player rather than just a safe bet option, which is the right choice. Baez seems to have really starter upside, but it sounds like he has some flaws to his game that he needs to work on, primarily plate discipline.
I like the players, but the overall grade of B grade for me is I would have preferred going after a single player with even higher upside.
I do really like that Bloom has 180’ed the pitching philosophy and is targeting guys with massive fastballs with great velocity and/or shape. This org is going from being filled with 35 (Hansen), 40 (Rincon), 45 (Mautz) fastballs to one filled with 60+ grade fastballs.
At least, the players we got are young and appear to be high ceiling guys. For me, that’s better than guys that have already hit their ceiling, and we pretty much know what we got and it’s nothing to get excited about.
