Maton is a given to move today. Will anyone else? I’d imagine that an overwhelming offer for Romero or one of the lefty hitters could bring another trade, but probably would say that has about a 15-20% chance of actually happening.
Maton will definitely get moved.
Romero is a possiblity.
I suppose Donovan, Noot, or Burly could go.
Maybe even a slight, slight chance Nado gets moved.
Shane Bieber to the Jays. I know some of us wanted to grab him this off season, but he hasn’t pitched yet in the bigs this year.
Mason Miller and JP Sears to the Padres. San Diego is treating their prospects as an all in team should…trade them all and let God sort them out.

Noot, Donny and Burly are also about next years attendance. That has to be a priority every opening day. They can’t bail on that revenue stream.
Maton is indeed the only really likely one left and he’s nearly a sure thing.
There’s some chance one or two of Burleson, Romero, Pozo, Saggese, Fermin, or Arenado is moved. Burleson would clearly be the biggest prize of that group. Also some chance Baker, Koperniak, or Siani leave from the minor league level, but Siani is the only one I could see a major league team even considering as a 26-man player.
Despite the rumors, I think there’s close to a zero chance that Nootbaar or Donovan are traded. Nootbaar is rehabbing and playing a little under where he should be so we’d be selling low and no true contender is going to be beating down our door to get him for a playoff run. And Donovan just doesn’t make sense as a trade for the Cardinals to make right now. But it’s hard to know how Chaim or Dewitt sees either of them.

What attendance? I don’t think they were even sold out this year on opening as much as the announce team on both TV and Radio want to say it was. It sure doesn’t appear having them on the team moved the needle this year. Didn’t get the traveling fans a reason to show.

The wild card is Nado with the Correa talks basically dead in the water but the main issue is money. Houston wanted a OF and the Twins to pay $50 mil or almost half on Correa’s remaining deal. My guess is they would want the same thing with the Nado. We might be willing to kick up some money but not half of Nados deal unless you are giving us a major prospect return.
The Cardinals have thus far saved around $7M by trading Fedde, Helsley, and Matz. There will be another $700k in savings when Maton gets dealt later today.

I don’t like this for the Cardinals, to put it mildly. Yes, Helsley’s a rental, so it won’t be hard for them to end up “winning” the deal in terms of value returned — if any of these guys gets to the majors, which is not a guarantee, they’ll probably come out ahead by WAR or your metric of choice. Helsley was one of the best relievers on the market, though, and this can’t have been the best possible return.
yep it seems like we got some minor league roster fillers here. Dohm is the only one that stands a chance for Busch. That’s okay…. they weren’t going to pay Helsley anyway. They won’t be paying anyone with real talent for a few years, maybe ’27. No harm no foul.
Now Jordan has some real talent and will probably see Busch this season. Jeez, I had high hopes for Matz but he never fit in here much…. he’ll likely do better in BOS.
I think, just like with the draft, the Cardinals are going after guys with some nice upside. It may not work out. Baez has risk galore. Dohm probably makes it if injuries don’t do him in but it could be as a Matt Svanson type. And Elissalt is just a flier who has the upside of backend reliever. There’s a good chance Baez and Elissalt never make it to the majors and Bohm is just a solid reliever. And there’s a small chance Bohm becomes a number 3 starter, Elissalt a good setup guy, and Baez a better than average starting third baseman. Overall, this seems like a good trade for 2 months of Helsley. But maybe they could have gotten better had they waited until the last minutes of the deadline.
I really like the Blaze Jordan trade though. Even if he’s just a short-sided platoon complement to Burleson or Gorman who also occasionally pinch-hits, that’s a great return for Matz especially when we gave away all of Matz’s remaining salary. This guy fits a need on our roster – especially if Herrera can successfully learn to play some corner outfield.
It won’t happen, but I’d love to see the team keep Maton and sign him to an extension. Then, just trade Arenado for salary relief and Burleson for a ready-now AAA starter who is blocked, but who looks very promising.
That’s my wish John. Make it happen.
I believe Jordan will have to be protected on the 40 man this year. Baker is done.
Nado will have to waive his NTC and I’m sure money will have to match up. I won’t say never but a lot has to happen to make something work and his market is limited to Houston pretty much. I’d say 15-20% chance and the return would be almost minimal. So based upon the crying some posters have done ont he return on Matz and Helsley. Let the whining begin!
Noot is the guy I’d watch today along with Maton. I agree with Jnevel. I’d like to keep him if we could. He would be reasonable contract wise. Only issue is pitching can be volatile and we shouldn’t necessarily expect his production this season to translate into 26 or 27. So I’d say the brass knows this and he’s likely gone.

I’m actually surprised that they could move Matz. I thought his performance Tuesday night against the Marlins killed whatever chance there was of moving him.
Maton has been pitching well enough this year to expect 3 years and 10-15M$. The Cardinals are not paying him that much money, But if the Cardinals can’t get a good return in trading him, I’d just as soon keep him and win a few more games here in da Lou.
Barring a last minute change, Phil Maton is expected to be the final trade for the Cardinals.

According to reports, the Cardinals have traded Fredbird to the Blue Jays for a MTBNL (Mascot to be named later).
I did not see that one coming. I wonder if they’ll be able to induce more flaps per inning or if we’ll see a spike in the old peck rate?
The other things with trading Noot right now is that he’s banged up and he wasn’t exactly tearing it up due to the fact he had been playing hurt for quite some time. So his value is a tad low. Other thing is how comfortable are you playing Scott in CF heading into next season. Noot is passable in CF and we all know how most of you feel about putting a Hampston or Siani on the roster. Really don’t think we have a capable FULL-TIME CF in the system. Scott right now is a huge ??? For me but is young. We’ve been down age road before with players recently. Waiting for them to pan out.
With Matz, Fedde, Mikolas, Maton and Helsley…..that’s $48.7 million in Salary off the books from 2025 into 2026
They save roughly 7 million for 2025 with these trades
There MLB 2025 payroll will be around $129 Million…..that is a $50 million cut from 2024 roughly
In 2024 there MLB Payroll was $179.5 Million
2026 Payroll could be real interesting if they don’t do anything in free agency, though Gray will be an Extra $10 Million b/c of the contract structure.
Our
Top of Rotation /’stopper’, Gray, isn’t pitching any better than Mikolas this year. But then, if we didn’t have him, we’d have a four man rotation, I guess. Kudos to MO for thinking ahead.Correa back to Houston. More to come!
