If the Cardinals are going to make a game of this one they need to get to the SD starter for some runs because SD has the best bullpen in baseball.
Well, since no one wanted him, Arenado’s decided to pack it in and coast. It’ll be interesting to see who else suddenly lands on easy street under the guise of the IL during the last couple of months. I mean, who in their right mind would want to work through the dog days of August for a lousy team if they didn’t have to? We should see plenty more of that little take some time off trick in the next couple of months.
Yeah Arenado isn’t really hurt – everyone knows that – but since he can’t be traded this is the trick we can use to open up a roster spot and to allow Gorman an extended run at third base.
Gorman is 25 I think – he’s no kid. It is time for him to step up or get cut loose / traded. I figure he’s got the next 51 games to prove he can hit ML pitching.
At some point this season I wonder if we will start seeing Bloom up there in the window with Mo, or without Mo. Something to keep an eye out for once they return to Busch.
I’ve also been wondering if there will be somebody with a GM title under Bloom, and what will become of Girsch, who is still in the FO I think, at least on paper.
jj, I hear you. I’m thinking about taking a break from here for about a month. I’ll watch the games but not read the thoughts.
The team trades a bunch of players whose contracts are expiring. Some posters think they didn’t get enough in return. Some posters think they should have traded more players. Some posters think they should have paid off some players with NTCs to go away. Some posters think the team should play better despite making these trades and needing to bring up players from the minors to fill the voids.
The only thing I know is that it will take some time to straighten this out unless a few players figure things out or management decides to buy some top shelf players. I don’t see them signing free agents so time, development and improvement is the answer.
The game threads are empty early on during the game. Very little baseball chatter. An outlet to vent in later innings now. Maybe that’s healthy? Hope so.
In the Cardinals last 25 losses they have scored 2 or fewer runs in 19 of those games. They have been shutout in 10 of those 25 losses.
Bling – I bet Mo rides solo all the way to the end.
As far as changes to the roster – only the bullpen changed. The position players and starting pitchers are exactly the same outside of McGreevy for Fedde at least to this point.
The offense has completely disappeared. Outside of the occasional outburst it’s been anemic for quite awhile.
We could easily go 0-6 on this road trip.
And with the Cubs and Yankees coming up, well, we might be ten (10) games under .500 by mid-August.
I wonder if Oli is feeling the pressure?
Pressure? I’ve come to believe he’s under no pressure at all and I expect that the one known as Bloom will offer the little whiz-kid a contract that would make Scioscia envious. Based on the current state of this franchise, I’d say he’ll be here longer than TLR…
I don’t know for sure if Ollie will come back next year or not. We will have a new sheriff in town but there are some reasons that I think he will be back:
1. He is under contract for next year and we know the Cardinals don’t like to eat money.
2. While he isn’t a top tier manager I don’t think all of our problems are his fault. This roster has a lot of problems but he had us overperforming the first half of the season before we ran out of steam. We have won one playoff series in the last decade so obviously our problems started way before Ollie came along.
3. If the Cardinals are going to view 2026 as another developmental reset year, and all indications are they are, why would you bring in a top shelf manager for that? Why would would a top shelf manager want to step into a situation like that? The Cardinals need to get their roster straightened out and determine they are ready to win before bringing in a big time manager. That is what the Cubs did with Joe Maddon back in 2015. He didn’t have to deal with the rebuild.
If you were going to hire the best race car driver you could find you would want to put him in a Corvette not a Prius.
Ollie doesn’t appear concerned at all by the performance of his team. Complacence seems to be the name of the game. “What? Me worry?” After all, he’s got another year’s salary coming in 2026 and management has made it clear that winning isn’t a priority. Let’s spend our energy thinking up new uniform ideas.
As I’ve said before, we might be entering a time similar to the 1970s when it comes to Cardinal baseball. Some decent players but typically not very good as a team.

Keep the splendid weather reports a coming, Rat…….wherever they may be. As a quick aside, I was just reading an article about one of my favorite actors, Billy Bob Thornton (Christopher Walken being #1). Billy Bob is sort of an odd duck. He has a rather severe phobia of……now get this……antique furniture of all things. Silverware also frightens him, so he generally opts for plastic spoons, forks and knives. But the thing that really caught my eye is that he’s a rabid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and insists that satellite dishes be installed atop his trailers when out on acting jobs so that he can watch Cardinal games. If Billy Bob were to ever stumble upon our site ( or who knows maybe he’s already here ), and was to check out our game threads, we would all have to make sure not to mention anything about silverware in our din-din comments or we’d risk scaring him off.

He’s had plenty of opportunities to hit MLB pitching. Even a good 20 game run still wouldn’t make me a believer because he would still have 31 games to go into his patented slumps.
The 1969 season was a watershed baseball season for me in the sense that as a young fan coming off watching my favorite team win back to back NL pennants and a WS championship it was a really big deal to experience the two leagues going to divisional play and having two expansion teams join the NL. And for one reason or another I always have an easier time recalling players from the ’69 expansion Expos than I do players from that same season’s expansion Padres. The Expos had quite a few players that are hard to forget like, Rusty Staub, Maury Wills, Ron Fairly and Don Clendenon. They also had a few all time great baseball names including three of my favorites that include, Manny Mota, Mudcat Grant and Coco Laboy. The ’69 Padres are a different story. I can always remember Nate Colbert, but only because he was a St. Louis native. However, I always have to look up the rest of the team to remember that former Cardinal Ed Spezio played on that ’69 Padre’s team along with Joe Neikro and Cito Gaston who later managed back to back WS championship teams in Toronto. At any rate, that 1969 season remains burned in my memory bank and I’d sure take a trip back if only I could.
Well, the game is about the begin. Maybe this will be a good one for us.
