Brian: Are teams obligated to spend revenue sharing money or can they keep it. For that matter do teams have to spend anything if they don’t want to?
All those writers had to do was to ask me and I could have saved them any embarrassment over their projection that the team owned by Junior was going to make big moves.

I know the purpose of the thread but your post seemed to suggested to me that you actually think they would make a “significant” acquisition. I just didn’t want you to think there was a chance for anything real happening. I don’t want you to be disappointed. Mo said clearly that he thought they had done a good job of addressing the teams needs. He is either delusional or he’s in Cardinal Speak mode. I think it’s the latter. Either way the off season is over and any discussion of deals is fruitless and a waste of time unless you are starting on next off-season.

Let me give you some help. THEY ARE DONE. They were done with any meaningful acquisitions after Ozuna.

Your optimism is always refreshing and it is pleasing, I think, to see someone who always sees the glass as half full or for that matter completely full even when it is only half full. I need to be more honest with myself about the Cardinals. I have been a die-hard fan since 1964 and I live for the season to watch the games. But, I can’t see everything the Cardinals do as a brilliant move that is bound to succeed.
The problem with the 2018 Cardinals is that with the exception of Molina and Martinez, everything else is uncertainty. Yes, all teams have uncertainties but not as m,any as the Cardinals. Ageing, health concerns, poor performance in 2017, lack of talent, etc. will plague this team in 2018. I too wished they had been serious in the off-season but I am not going to say everything will be okay.Finally, relying on all those great young players at Memphis will forever keep the Cardinals from being a division favorite let alone a WS favorite. Very few of those kids will be quality major league players. They have a pulse and they are cheap and taht’s why the Cardinal spin machine keeps hyping them.
In my opinion the Cardinals are not as good in 2018 as they were in 2017. It’s close but when you played like the Cardinals did in 2017 you need to go big and be aggressive in the off-season rather than the tepid response that we always get from the Front Office.
However, all is not lost because we haven’t played the first game yet. Hope for the best.
If that is pessimistic then so be it.This roster is riddled with question marks from top to bottom. It’s like the Dusty Springfield song “wishin and hopin”.
I knew this family that went to a Christmas tree lot a few days before Christmas and found the tree with a broken limb and that was twisted into a grotesque shape so no one else wanted it. It was a tree in name only. They bought it and gave it a home. Bud Norris is kind of like that. He is a career loser with a high ERA and he was injured the last part of last season with bad knees at age 32 and we acquire him. I don’t think they signed Norris in reaction to Darvish being signed by the Cubs. Junior doesn’t operate that way. But is is depressing as a Cardinal fan as I am hoping that they will bring in big names with big talent and dazzle the fans and maybe make the playoffs. But then the Cubs sign Darvish, a potential all star and the next day we sign Norris and we’re not even sure if he can walk to the mound let alone pitch off of it. It is a head shaker but it gives me material for laughter. Maybe this is Junior’s answer to diminishing hot dog sales in September.

You’re right of course but will a slight drop in revenue due to selling less beer and hotdogs or maybe a hat pressure Junior into a big signing for years and money? Not a chance. He’s making money hand over fist as they say and not winning means nothing to him as long as the books look good. I guess if you are right and they are feeling the “pinch” then they’d be taking 2018 seriously and acquiring talent, Ozuna notwithstanding. I’m waiting for the big deals to come along to address this decline in “interest” that you and others are suggesting. I’m not holding my breath are you?
What empty seats? 3.4 million. They are under NO pressure to do anything. Junior is smiling all the way. They conceded the division before before the off-season started. But they could be in the wild card until late September. A few seats would be lost for a few home games if they are eliminated early but they would lose considerably less than a twenty million dollar player. Thus there off-season Modus Operandi. Here comes spring training, my favorite time of the year.
The best column Bernie has ever written. The Cardinal BS machine is the best of any organization in baseball. Many of the things Bernie said in jest will be said by the Cardinals and they will mean it. Then Mo will say he’s excited about this team and they’ll finish third again.

Cardinal fans have seen for years that their owners are not spending hundred of million of dollars, ticket prices have not decreased and attendances is still up. 3.4 million fans last year…second highest in baseball. I can’t speak for other teams but if you expect Cardinal ticket prices to drop you will be waiting for a long time.
I will not suggest to you what words you can or cannot use and I would appreciate it if you would please extend to be the same courtesy.

I don’t think there is collusion and I’m not convinced anyone will flinch. Teams have acquired players including the Cardinals and those teams are ready for ST. Sure, they’d like to have some of the big names but those players want too much money and too many years. I’m not sure what is going to happen this year but next year I believe we could see many players sign sooner for less money and fewer years.
Is this a record for the number of quality unsigned free agents one week before ST? I have no idea. Doe anyone know?
Texascard: They have always had a shot to improve the team. They have plenty of money and prospects for trading. They drew 3.4 million last year and will do so this year as well. Why should they add to the cost side and reduce their profit? The roster is set and ready for 2018. Fans will have to hold their nose and hope for the best.
gscottar: There are some on this forum who can talk this roster into the 27 Yankees. I laugh just reading some of the valuations of the Cardinal players. I’m not sure we can finish second in the division. And, I can’t see this roster winning more games than the Diamond Backs or Rockies.
We all know he is a successful businessman. He is making millions hand over fist. If, however, a goal is to win the WS then he is the wrong kind of owner. You have to be willing to take risks and yes sometimes sign a long term deal for a bunch of money knowing that the last years will not be productive but the first three or four could be and give you a chance at a trophy. Yes, it’s a risk but if you are not willing to take risks then the team will be respectable and nothing more.
I agree with trading Grichuk. He was never going to get any better. Now, I guess either Bader or O’neill could make the roster.
Brian: Good one and funny. But this hardly is a big move. He was in 65 games with a 3-0 record and one save. A glorified long man. We need impact players and he certainly is not one.
So far we have one very good addition in Ozuna and three slugs. I just think we need more “real” players added.
