This afternoon, I joined @AdamRonis and @DrRoto of @ScoutFantasy on @SiriusXMFantasy to discuss the 2018 #stlcards from a fantasy perspective and the NL LABR Draft. Listen to the audio here: https://t.co/SsXbfavPoB

March 7, 2018 at 10:27 am #45151March 7, 2018 at 10:31 am #45152Has Cecil been hurt and if not why is just now getting into a game?
March 7, 2018 at 11:08 am #45159Just being brought along slowly is what has been said publicly.
March 7, 2018 at 11:38 am #45163slowly seems accurate but also they said he had a personal tragedy that he wont talk about
it seems no one is pushing for an explanation other than that and i appreciate that
March 7, 2018 at 4:45 pm #45189Seems like a run of obliques this year…
March 7, 2018 at 7:41 pm #45194That’s the 3rd oblique injury of ST that I know of.
Is his injury minor like Carp’s injury was supposed to be minor?
March 7, 2018 at 8:03 pm #45196Does that game Cecil pitched even count toward ST stats? There’s no box score and his stats don’t appear anywhere that I can see.
March 7, 2018 at 8:32 pm #45197No. “B” games are informal. No stats available.
March 7, 2018 at 8:33 pm #45198I missed this news item yesterday. Perhaps you did too.
March 7, 2018 at 8:43 pm #45199Cecil had a death in the family according to reports in the PD.

ParticipantDoes Knizner adding a 1st baseman’s mitt to his gear bag put him ahead of Kelly? Why isn’t Kelly getting a chance to do the same?
Have additional RH batters become personae non grata for St. Louis? I think seems about right.
March 8, 2018 at 10:13 am #45218Knizner has prior experience at first, as recently as in the AFL.
March 8, 2018 at 10:50 am #45229Joe Trezza has been filling in for Jennifer Langosch covering the Cards for MLB while she is on maternity leave. While Langosch is very good at her job, Trezza has been equally outstanding. Nothing gets by that guy.
March 8, 2018 at 11:07 am #45230So J.Mart getting playing time at 1B this season appears to be out the window. And I was called crazy for (not on this site) advocating the Cardinals trade Carp at the deadline and offseason. He does indeed appear to be very fragile. Good heavens.
Matt Carpenter on the turf field early today to run throigh fielding drills and throws, testing his shoulder. It could limit his play to first base, Matheny agreed. It can be a bother, like back. #cardinals #stlcards

March 8, 2018 at 11:11 am #45231Maybe Knizner could expand his versatility beyond first base to the tune of playing at the hot corner again. He certainly has the look to man the position still.
March 8, 2018 at 11:59 am #45233NJ315
ParticipantI am with you BlackHills. Should have traded him. And I have all along he is fragile.
March 8, 2018 at 1:13 pm #4523514NyquisT
ParticipantWe have to extremely promising young catchers that are (Kelly) MLB ready, and very close to being MLB ready (Knizner). Most teams would be ecstatic for having this situation.
So what does the Card FO do? They overpay with a three year contract for a 36-y.o. C in decline who mouths off publicly about Matheny. But he does help the skipper filling out who will play and when and where he bats in the order. These advantages aren’t seen elsewhere in MLB.
Now the promising top-10 prospects have to try playing other positions to MAYBE get some playing time there.
Perhaps the Molina deal was tied to Oquendo coming back. Just a thought because I can’t justify in my mind, what was the thinking of Mozeliak.
March 8, 2018 at 1:30 pm #4523714NyquisT
ParticipantMolina and Leake together are getting over 25% of the teams salary (Spotrac). Talk about bang for your buck.
March 8, 2018 at 1:38 pm #45239show me the decline in Molina
it isnt there offensively…and any “proof” of his decline defensively is extremely subjective as are all defensive metrics and even the “eye test” would only potentially put him in the top 5-10 of active catchers instead of 1-3
and Kelly has done NOTHING to prove he can provide anything better for the team…outside of potentially slightly better top end speed which is rarely needed as catcher…as Yadi’s baserunning is pretty good…and he was the SB leader last year at the position
you can keep saying all you want about Yadi’s decline as if it is fact but until i see it and see Kelly doing anything to warrant him supplanting Yadi i wont consider Yadi’s contract as being detrimental in any way
but feel free to keep saying it over and over…doesnt make it true nor does it make it any more convincing
March 8, 2018 at 1:54 pm #4524114NyquisT
ParticipantIf you watch Molina’s play you can see the decline as suggested by nearly every Cardinal outlet. If you choose to be a pollyanna that is your prerogative and you have the right to be wrong. Look it up.
March 8, 2018 at 2:44 pm #45244im not wrong either…look it up yourself
you can feel free to blissfully ignorant and succumb to your own bias all you want, but i dont have to accept it just because you keep saying it over and over
i didnt say he isnt in some kind of decline..i said (and have said multiple times) that his decline is still far better than most every other active catcher…that he is in a decline is not the question…a decline means nothing at all… Molina was up so high his decline to where he is is still good..and for some reason you cant see that through your bias against him and the org giving him a contract…oh and your complaining about him not running out his grounders to 1b…or maybe his one time kerfuffle with Matheny…
also where is all this proof of Kelly being better and worthy of unseating Molina?
Molina was top 5 last year in hitting, All Star (voted in by players..player respect), SB leader at catcher, GG finalist (top 3), leader in RBIs for CArdinals, hit .273, 18HRs, 2.8 WAR, with 1.1 dWar, and played in 136 games
i have shown my proof over and over and all you do is say that it isnt true…and that everyone knows that he is bad and declining terribly…and cite no specific individuals or stats
the facts show that despite your bias…Yadi isn’t declining to a point that he should be replaced
now…he “should” be declining…he should be not good anymore and his numbers should be way down…but they havent done that yet… until they do and until Kelly shows something other than a dependable glove (which arent hard to find)…not only should Molina not be replaced it shouldnt even be a discussion until he shows weaknesses to warrant it…a “slight” to negligible decline in pitch framing does not constitute such proof
The stats show he is top end…the lists of top catchers by pundits and writers put him near the top…the eye test still shows it…the respect of the players show it, his durability shows it
deny the facts all you want Ny…i am looking at stats and awards on my side…not only do i have those but also the eye test too…but that’s ok…blame his jogs to 1b, and 1 media guffaw, and personal bias against the StL org and decision to extend him to vilify him…
i have never seen someone go out of their way to find any idea of flaws in someone to back up their personal bias so much…you seem to watch hoping to see a mistake…you WANT him to play poorly so it can justify your bias opinion….and if it doesnt play out the way you want you just deny it
i am happy to have my high opinion of Yadi…it lines right up with the stats and subjective rankings of writers and analysts
i will continue to counter your repeated unwarranted defamation of Yadi with a rebuttal…but you seem long gone from trying to reason with…
March 8, 2018 at 3:23 pm #45245I am not taking sides, but this is too ironic to pass up. I just arrived in Jupiter and sat down in the press box next to a veteran writer. Our first conversation was about the catching situation. He says he believes Kelly is better defensively than Molina right now. Surprised me. Very strong words.
Also, Ravelo, who was dealing with an injury, has been assigned to minors camp. With a road game tomorrow night and minors camp opening, there could be more cuts tonight.
March 8, 2018 at 8:55 pm #45256Update from Jen Langosch.
Meet Audrey Rose, the biggest acquisition of my lifetime. Our little girl joined us at 3:30 am, weighing 10 pounds, 2 ounces and measuring 21 3/4 inches. Oh, and she already has more hair than her dad. Thanks to everyone who sent love and well wishes. pic.twitter.com/l3WAkmLkOd

March 8, 2018 at 9:10 pm #45261I for one was very happy when Yadi was extended. It hadn’t been that long after Pujols walked away from the team and I was very concerned that he would follow Albert to Anahiem. And we had nada catching prospects at the time.
20/20 hindsight is great but Knizner did not emerge as a prospect until the second half of last year and while Kelly was given high marks defensively he didn’t really show a lot of offense until 2016.
Add to that he has been one of our best clutch hitters since signing that extension. Yes he has slowed a bit in blocking pitches in the dirt but otherwise is still solid defensively. I think he is underrated as a catcher because little attention seems to be played to how well pitchers perform with him behind the plate.
I can agree that Kelly is better defensively but am not sure he is up to the Molina level in the mental part of the game.
