Frank – you’re welcome. It also came out today that Noot would play in Memphis Tuesday and Wednesday. That sets him up to return to the big leagues on Friday. So barring a new injury, we will see Noot on Friday.
Nobody cares if you are a great base runner and play gold glove defense and hit for power and get on base at a high clip. Or that you’re doing all that as a rookie with literally 2 months of ML experience. You have to be able to get a hit in 28% of your at bats versus only 25%. Otherwise, you’re just ok. It is known Brian.
I do agree that Hjerpe still has a lot of ifs but I don’t think the idea of him pitching out of the ML bullpen by September is quite as far fetched as you believe. I’m almost certain he could have done it and been effective before he got hurt. However, the goal was to make him a starter. I’m only saying it could happen and I wouldn’t be that surprised if it did.
As for Matthews, if I were a gambler, I’d bet heavily on him being on the big league roster this season. He’s going to get his pitches under better control. Right now he’s just tinkering around to figure out what works and what doesn’t.
I forgot to add Cijntje to my others who are interesting group. I actually have never watched him pitch yet. Not sure why I keep missing him but I do. I’ve only seen highlights. He’s certainly interesting.
For the most part, balls got hit right at Velasquez and Fermin last night. There was one ball that dropped in front of Velasquez that went for a single that I’m pretty sure a normal left fielder would have gotten to and I’m 99% certain Church would have gotten to. That “hit” didn’t lead to any runs so no harm no foul. It worked in a small sample size.

Nootbaar is rehabbing at AA Springfield right now. He has been rehabbing for about 2 weeks now. My guess would be he stays in Springfield or Memphis another week before they add him back to the ML roster, but it’s possible he gets added as soon as today.
I also really like Fajardo and had him in my top 10 overall at the start of this season. I continue to be super impressed with him each outing.
I’m also still a Matthews fan. He can turn things on and off at will. That’s going to come in handy soon. He should get himself right by July or August and when that happens, he’ll look like the best pitcher in the system.
I’m not sure what to think of Doyle or Franklin yet. They are both obviously very talented, but whether or not they can last at least 5-6 innings per game is a big question mark and one that probably won’t be answered this season. Still, they have to be considered top 5.
I’ll put Hjerpe at 5. Still high hopes. We should see him soon. He could potentially be in the big leagues this season in relief if the Cardinals are still competitive in September. By next season, he should be starting again. He completely flummoxes hitters. I’m just not sure he stays a starter either.
Molina, Davis, Holiday, Graham, Mautz, Henderson, and Roby are all very interesting. Lin is a bit of a crapshoot. I wouldn’t bet on him. Also some other very young arms and a reclamation project in Dutkanych and Ethan Young that could each play out positively. Lots to be excited about. Odle could be interesting, but I think he goes to relief. Hence and Clarke are too broken to count on.
Roycroft would be the only eligible pitcher (except Hence). I don’t know why they would do that. However, it could be someone not on the 40-man like Shuster. Probably not going to be Gastellum. He had a great week but he worked a lot. My guess would be either Shuster or Rajcic gets added tomorrow. More likely Shuster since Rajcic pitched an inning tonight.
Great job overall by Dobbins. Saved the pen.
I’m not sure how I feel about sticking with Dobbins here. It helps the pen rest, but this is still a big game and 4 runs isn’t out of reach.
They handle these guys as though they were delicate cream puffs that could break if they so much as sneeze.
Maybe that’s because these guys do seem to break after sneezing. We have like 15 injuries to our minor league pitchers. Every day I see new headlines come across ESPN about another pitcher hurt. Just a different world. Guys throw so hard and with so much spin compared to yesterday. Batters got faster and stronger so pitchers did the same (or vice versa). Same as in every professional sport. More money equals more incentive to get better. Therefore, more people competing to get better and more companies and trainers working to make people better.
That hit by Busch sure looked like it would have been caught by a normal left fielder.
It’s possible Church would have run down that drive by Conforto, but not sure on that one.
The data says third time through the lineup is generally much worse. Same today as it was in yesterday’s world. Just today they use that data and act on it – for better or worse. I guess Ollie decided he didn’t want Bregman vs Libby for the 3rd time. Didn’t seem to matter though as Dobbins got the worst result possible.
What Outfield defense? Who needs that?
We have a career infielder surrounded by 2 linebackers. What could go wrong?
I have no idea what you’re saying this time LA. Is that even a skill set? How can he not know how to do that? Heck, he’s done it 4 times in the last 5 games including twice yesterday. And in one of those games, the starter covered 7 of the 8 innings we pitched. Maybe he could do it more, but saying he doesn’t know how to do something that he regularly does is just a bad take.
I really thought they would cut Pushard after Spring Training. Then he wasn’t very good during his rehab stint. I realize this is probably garbage time at this point, but I’m not sure how long they can keep hanging onto him.
Blaze Jordan is 5 for 6 in the Memphis game. I’m not sure if that’s good enough for Rats to admit he can hit or not.
Throughout his career, Gorman is average to great against every type of pitch except changeups and splitters. Not surprisingly he now gets thrown mostly changeups.
He’s batting .075 off changeups this season. He’s batting .519 off four seam fastballs. Which would you throw him?
One of these days Gorman is going to actually hit a changeup. Just not tonight. Maybe not this season. Sigh.
I was thinking the same Albert. He can’t hit into one leading off the game and the bottom of our lineup hasn’t really gotten on base much. But, we will still take it.
Booyah – Since 2020, our pitchers have committed the 2nd fewest errors (48) behind only the Rays. I’m not sure about throwing errors specifically, but my guess is most errors on pitchers are throwing errors.
