Nootbaar, Fermin, and Burleson manage to erase the shutout. Need 4 more here so we don’t have to go to the pen.

Gorman went 0 for 4 with 4 strikeouts at Memphis tonight. I didn’t watch so not sure what to say about his swing adjustments.

Cardinals cut it to 4-3 as Crooks singles home Burleson. It’s now up to JJ with 2 outs and Crooks on first.

I guess it was too many runs to get back as the D-backs sub out their closer for a flame-throwing lefty who strikes out Wetherholt swinging.

I guess it’s nice that they didn’t pack it in, but when you surrender 4 runs in the 9th inning of a scoreless game it’s spelled with an L.

This team needs a Manny in the BP…Any Manny will help.

Interesting game. Let’s see what Leahy can do next time up. Crooks and Jordan are having trouble getting traction at the Major League level. Jordan is no Nolan Arenado, but his defense hasn’t bothered me yet. He’s gat a strong accurate arm.

Yeah, mudville, it’s a shame the team couldn’t capitalize on the nice turn from Leahy. And I agree on Crooks, but Jordan’s performed better than I would have guessed.

Remind me again why Crooks is playing? This guy is under 200! Send Crooks down and bring up Joshua Baez. Velazquez isn’t producing much either, another candidate to send down or trade.

Crooks has played 31 MLB games. He’s considered a top prospect. We carry 3 catchers for a reason.

Velasquez has an .897 ops in limited playing time. He is not good defensively but they appear ok with spot starting him in the OF and at DH.

wITH THE SCRE 0-0 IN THE 9TH INNING, WHY BRING IN THE WORst relief pitcher you have out of 8. 7.00+ ERA

There was no choice Sooner. They had Soriano and Graceffo. They needed to hold back Graceffo in case the game went into extra innings and they needed multiple innings. One could ask why a fresh arm had not been brought up.

I’m not even sure Soriano was available. They had Svanson, Graceffo, or Bruihl and as Bling said, the other 2 were more for long relief in extras. Svanson was really the only choice Ollie had available to him.

IMO, and I said this 2 days ago before that game, they should have swapped in a fresh arm for Rajcic and used that arm in the game that night to save someone for last night’s game. It was the disaster start Sunday that got us in this mess. Fortunately, Pallante and Leahy both pitched a decent amount of innings to help pull us out. Not quite there yet. We need a good long start tonight.

Well I would have Soriano or Graceffo pitching the 9th.

A reminder of the problem with sending pitchers down quickly. They cannot come back for 15 days unless someone is injured. And a player is only allowed five times down and up in one season, or less than once per month on average.

Here are the 40-man arms currently active in Memphis: Dobbins, Mautz and Hence. And Dobbins went down on the 12th so he is not yet eligible to return and he has already been optioned out three times this season.

That is the entire cupboard. Depth continues to be a big problem.

P.S. I forgot to mention Fernandez. He has thrown twice in his Memphis rehab and should be ready to come off the IL very soon. He is likely the next man up.

Brian, at the time, I had them bringing up Gastellum for Rajcic and losing Pozo off the 40-man. Gastellum had a day off the day prior so he was relatively fresh. It doesn’t matter now.

With the way Crooks is hitting Pozo may come back to STL.

jnevel, if you haven’t listened to the podcast today, Kyle spoke in some detail about concerns with Gastelum (think Granillo but featuring a different off-speed pitch).
